It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back Public Enemy (1988)
Not only does this have one of the best album titles of all time, it’s an incredible album on top of that. Chuck D’s serious lyrics and Flava Flav’s goofiness work off each other incredibly well + Terminator X’s DJing and the album’s beats are so uncanny but they work. Never thought a hip-hop track would work over Slayer’s “Angel of Death” but here we are with “She Watch Channel Zero?!” Side note: did anyone watch that reality show “Strange Love” with Flavor Flav and Brigette Nielsen? Was on all the time when I was younger  “Black Steel in the hour of Chaos” is the album highlight and like most millennials my introduction to this group was Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and the Public Enemy/Anthrax version of “Bring the Noise” but the original still goes hard. Absolute masterpiece. The DJing is fantastic, and Chuck D is a master. Just banger after banger on this.
Tricky has an amazing cover of Black Steel.

Straight Outta Compton N.W.A (1988)
The embryonic sounds of The Chronic and Doggystyle without all the skits and filler. “Fuck tha Police” & to a lesser extent “Straight Outta Compton” are iconic tracks but for the most part the rest of the album is great too. Not every track hits but rather that any day than stuff like the $20 Sack Pyramid. Like Massive Attack all of the group work and flow together incredibly well. Rating 9/10

Appetite for Destruction Guns N’ Roses (1989)
(Copy/paste from PW album suggestions thread) My dad owns this album so I have vague recollections of this from childhood but I’m sure it will pain most GNR fans to know the only album of there’s I have listen to a lot is Chinese Democracy. Was a running joke if Chinese Democracy, Duke Nukem Forever and Detox by Dr.Dre all came out the world would end…the later cancelled so we are safe for now. As for this album, it has 3 of the most famous songs of all time on one album..that’s impressive for an entire discography let alone one DEBUT album. You can’t go far without hearing one of these songs featured on a soundtrack of an action film. The rest of the tracks are fun simple rock tracks, nothing that stands out particularly well but nothing bad. Favourite Tracks: Welcome to the Jungle,Sweet Child O’ Mine Least Favourite: You’re Crazy Rating 8/10

Straight outta Compton is a great album, but I think has not aged as well as some other of the classic discs. I still love it but some tracks are not as great as others.
Appetite for me like all of their releases is hits and mehs. The hits are great, but the b-sides are absolutely forgettable. Ask people to blindly name songs off the disc few will remember Out ta Get Me, Anything Goes or even My Michelle.
Banger disc, but very uneven, which continues with all their releases. It’s So Easy is the sleeper hit on the disc. And one of the most savage songs ever written by a band, as it is basically about how the band was bored with the sluts waiting to fuck them after shows that they then could scam off of until they left for the next town. Like def is a read the lyrics song.

Nation of Millions, Straight Outta Compton, and Appetite for Destruction are all straight up classics that I still play to this day.
My favorites from Appetie are Night Train, Mr. Brownstone, and Rocket Queen.

Sign 'O' the Times Prince (1987)
Never thought I’d compare Prince to Nine Inch Nails but he we are. Always so many little things happening instrumentally throughout the track that it makes even the Most generic pop lyrics interesting to listen to. Not saying the lyrics are bad but definitely not the highlight of the album. Wasn’t a fan of the run length for a pop album but curious to hear more from Prince I’ve already really heard the song Purple Rain. Rating 7/10 67
Faith George Michael (1987) Faith is an iconic track and One More Try is great but the rest of this album sounds like 2:30 in the afternoon. If you’re huge into 80s pop you might like this but I’d just stick the singles. Rating 3/10

Graceland Paul Simon (1986) So as I mentioned my music taste is pretty narrow as I listen to the same artists a lot, hence the inspiration for these threads. All the artists on this list so far I at least recognised, I came across Paul Simon. Never heard of him. So I listen through the album, beautiful signing voice but for the most part the lyrics are incredibly plain. Like the whitest New Balance wearing dad released and album and the African elements are there just to try and give this some flavour. Then “You Call Me Al” lost track of how many times I’ve heard this song on the radio station my parents listened to. Then it clicked, Simon & Garfunkel that everyone talks about…this is Simon 🤣🤦🏻♀️. Fantastic song. Instrumentals are great as his Simon’s voice, lyrics left a lot to be desired for me. Rating 6/10

Not a superfan of George Michael solo, but Wham's Make It Big released a few year earlier was amazing. Careless Whisper is one of my favorite songs period. Moreso the one Michael's produced himself. It was his masterpiece for sure. Steve Gregory sax work is just iconic on this.
But yeah, even people into gay 80's pop are deeply split on Michaels.
Not a fan of Simon or Garfunkel at all.

The Queen is Dead The Smiths (1986) Except for maybe Nickelback I’ve never seen people express their hatred for a band so frequently and openly. One of the record stores I used to frequent had 3 store policies and the last one was not to ask if they stocked the smiths. The guy that worked there was also bonged out of his mind and took 5 minutes to work out 23 + 26 when serving sandylea 🤣. When I watched reviews of “The Killer” all reviews joked that the character was the way he was because he listened to the Smiths. I’ve also heard numerous times Morrissey is a complete wanker, but I like Burzum and the dude behind that is a terrible person so that doesn’t really phase me. So I didn’t know what to expect but I was very pleasantly surprised. This takes the sounds of The Sisters of Mercy and Bauhaus and makes it a bit more popy (by conparison) and digestible for the average listener. Don’t get me wrong it’s not a cheerful album but it’s not as dark and depressing as other similar albums. The Queen is Dead,Never Had No One Ever, There is a Light That Never Goes Out & Bigmouth strikes again are all fantastic tracks. Brilliant 37 minute album. Rating 10/10

Hounds of Love Kate Bush (1985) I liked the opening track (made famous that’s to stranger things) and Under Ice but a lot of this sounds the same and when it doesn’t it’s out of place like Jig of Life. I like a lot of albums from the 70s and the 90s but there’s just something about a lot of 80s music that I just can’t get into and I can’t articulate what exactly that is well. Rating 3/10

I do prefer Wham! too but George Michael had some bangers solo. I think he got better as he got away from the Wham! stuff, that stuff only worked when he was with Ridgeley. So many underrated classics like "Edge of Heaven", "Bad Boys", "Club Tropicana" in addition to the big stuff like "Careless Whisper" "Last Christmas" & "Everything She Wants" but he really evolved and got a little more of an edge as a solo artist.

Michaels solo stuff is not bad, just not what I liked about Wham. He had to evolve though if he wanted to keep releasing music that the radio would play though as they grew cold very fast on that early era of gay pop. Soft Cell got like one hit with Tainted Love and almost nothing else they did ever got play since they refused to change. Human League got Don't You Want Me then the had trouble getting their hits played. Michaels was smart to adapt. The rest went mostly forgotten, and he released hits well into the 90's.
For his work, he also had that killer take on Somebody to Love with Queens from Wembley.

Rating 3/10 The songs, starting from "And Dream of Sheep," right to the end of the album, is all part of the conceptual Side B called "The Ninth Wave." So if you think those songs sound off, compared to the rest of the album, that's why.

Got into this disc and Bush very late but it is a masterpiece. I loved that for the A side and B side she did two different conceptuel albums. Should surprise very few that a lot of her songs were played in goth clubs. Wuthering Heights and Running up that Hill were heard regularly.
Did not realize Bush did the synthwork herself for her songs. That blew me away given how damn complicated those old synths were. Also learned she used a Fairlight CMI which was the beloved synth of Coil finally explaining the odd mystery to me of why Coil sounded so much like Bush.

Big thing for her is due to that Fairlight CMI she used for the early discs, her sound was truly unique. Just has a distinctive sound to it that sounds like nothing else. And paired so well with the LinnDrum she used on many albums including Hounds of Love. Not what many care about when they think of her, but stuff I enjoyed from her music was the backing stuff was unlike what anyone else was doing, and revolutionary for electronic music.

For his work, he also had that killer take on Somebody to Love with Queens from Wembley. With WHAM! he still sorta kept his sexuality undercover but once he went solo, he basically just let it all out. "Older" came after a nasty breakup with his record label and the loss of his boyfriend so it was a very mature album. Music still holds up really well, both with WHAM! and solo. Sucks he had the public image dagger with the arrest over public lewdness and issues with drugs late in his life because he was so good.

Murmur R.E.M. (1983)
Having only really heard losing my religion, I had to double check this was the some vocalist. Incredible range all throughout the album. Both musically and vocally, great lyrics too. We Walk, Radio Free Europe and Laughing being my favourites throughout. I didn’t care too much for Moral Kiosk or 9-9 but the rest of the album was great. Rating 8/10

I appreciate there’s something abstract on this list but this is definitely a taste I haven’t acquired. Just a lot of strange short tracks that abdruptly stop and album goes in another direction. The Number of the Beast Iron Maiden (1982) My dad owned this on vinyl, I think he got rid of al his collection which is a shame as he probably had original pressing of a lot of stuff before the vinyl revival. As I’ve mentioned numerous times I have little to no musical knowledge. So you could tell me someone is the best/worst drummer because of xyz and I’ll take your word for it. Because of that the vocal style of an artist/band is the main selling point for me. Instrumentals sound great, lyrics have great storytelling but I just can’t get into Bruce Dickenson’s vocal style. Also I didn’t know they have had multiple vocalists? I had a quick listen and all in similar vein. Same with the band Manowar i can’t get into the operatic style. Keep in mind I love black metal so the irony isn’t lost on me when Black Metal vocals sound like throat surgery gone wrong: I can’t deny Run to the Hills & number of the beasts are iconic tracks but like iron maiden I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Iron Maiden. I found this album to be their weakest and way overrated, Piece Of Mind the follow up ended up being my favorite then Powerslave and Caught Somewhere In Time to Seventh Son was incredible run of 4-5 star albums, excellent cheese ball 80’s metal.
