This offense if fucking frightening. So true, but in a lot of ways tonight is actually more notable for the way their defence is playing. Actually getting some stops this week. Beat Cris to it by a good half hour.

The game is officially ugly, up by 17, score 14 in the span of about a minute of playtime. Bengals are going to have to catch fire if they hope to make this even respectable.

Defense should play better at home and Bengals went away from run early, no faith the defense is fixed.
woah Al, lets not rewrite the history of the Chiefs firing their GM unexpectedly right after he drafted a franchise QB.

I bet Burfict is back in next series, he's not hurt, just embarrassed by Hunt all night tonight.
OK maybe he is hurt - can't say I'm upset being wrong.

Bengals replacing Burfict's dirtiness by committee now he's out of the game. Lets hope the Chiefs put a sixtyburger on the them.

That should do it for the starters, no reason to risk any of the stars with the Bengals being the Bengals, even if Burfict isn't out there.

Genuine question, not looking for anyone to nibble, what position does Donald play? I watched the Rams last night and he plays on the front end of a 3-4? He doesn't seem to line up as a DT, not in this game anyway.
Bear in mind my knowledge is extremely limited so go easy.

Bye week couldn't have gone better for the Steelers, entire North loses, putting them, for the time, in the top spot. These next two games are of the utmost importance, win those, and they'll be in driver's seat to take the North.

He's a DE in a 3-4, but it's not the same as a DE in a 4-3 because he still plays between the tackles. The comparable position to a 4-3, which he played in before Wade Phillips, was DT. Position name is semantics; he's an interior D-Lineman, not an outside pass rusher.

Wade Phillips technically runs a 3-4 , but like most of the NFL - they all play sub packages and multiple fronts on a pretty consistent basis. Probably not as much against a talent void 49ers offense but against better teams he'd definitely line up at 3 technique when they go to sub packages. Also playing end in a 3-4 (or a five technique) isn't being an edge rusher , historically its' a position that is just asked to occupy lineman so the linebackers can make plays but lately teams have been trying to get penetration and disruptive players at that position. Donald is a beast at any spot on the line and I'd still even consider a 5 technique interior line play.

Mahomes has thrown 22 TDs in his first eight games, moving past the previous record of 21 by Kurt Warner.
A few things:
1 - He didn't record a passing TD in Game 1 (Week 17 last year), which means it's really 22 TDs in seven games (incredible).
2 - And this is my favorite quote from the articles: "Mahomes is closing in on the Chiefs' single-season record for touchdowns. Len Dawson threw 30 touchdown passes in 1964, and Mahomes has nine games to catch him." He'll legit set the franchise TD record in a few weeks. Unbelievable.
He's the runaway MVP candidate this year, with only Gurley on his tail IMO. Chiefs hit the jackpot.

Watt rushes outside tackle a lot more in passing downs from what I've seen; Donald is almost exclusively interior.

I think I get it. By that you mean he attacks the outside when he rushes rather than the inside, making it more of a question of how he attacks the offensive line as opposed to where he lines up opposite it. Makes sense, and it is true, although the Texans like to line Watt up all across the front and rush from the edges with Mercilus and Clowney.
One thing is for certain, Donald is a monster. Haven't seen much Rams but I picked the right game to get an idea of what makes him the best defensive player.

Kinda. He doesn't choose where he attacks; those are drawn up in the play design. All defensive fronts have assignments, whether that's lanes or gap coverage - you don't just let them pick and choose. I mean specifically JJ is edge rushing whereas Donald is caving the middle. JJ may crush up the middle too - and he's great when he does - but he still edge rushes on passing downs (at least more than Donald).
Both guys are beasts. Donald has been PFF's No. 1 Player for a few years running, and I think he certainly took the spot of best defensive player in the league in 2016 when JJ went down. I still give Donald the edge now (and his stats reflect that too) through seven weeks, but I don't view it as a slight to be a hair below the arguably the best single player in the game. And JJ may still have held that crown if he hadn't been hurt in 2016.

Gruden is doing exactly what Gregg Rosenthal said he would do UT - pump up guys one minute and then cut them loose a few weeks later. He said before the season that the offence was going to run through Cooper . Stockpiling these first round picks is nice and all but you still have to pick the right guys. I don't really get the idea going around the internet that the Cowboys got fleeced here. You cannot compare this to the Josh Gordon situation, nor the Jones' unwillingness to pay a first round pick for Earl Thomas. Cooper is not a top 10 WR at the moment, but he has proven that he is a more than capable #1 type which they desperately needed, and he's only 24.

Yeah and fleecing your roster of talent in the moment isn't smart. I know Cooper had some highs and lows but he is an uber talented receiver that proved in the right system he can be a really good receiver. Like you said though , GR called it and now it's coming true. And given that Gruden is a pretty average-bad drafter throughout his history I don't have faith in him coming through. Not too mention the fact that he's never actual developed a quarterback so Carr is probably getting traded for another bust.

Nate Solder has been such a disappointment. I think everyone accepted that we were overpaying a guy that was not an elite LT but at the very least we were hoping for decent play. I expect drive killing mistakes from everyone else on our line but he should be better.

I absolutely HATE the way refs blow plays dead. That stupid incomplete call cost us a real chance at a return TD. Let things play out and then use the replay to double check.

God Eli has made some horrible reads tonight. So many plays (and points) left on the field because he can't find the open receiver.
