iCheckMovies costs money? Fuck that. I signed up for free. You have to pay for extra stuff like noting movies you actually own.

Like Ness, Mufasa's death made my list, and I stopped thinking about Lion King after that. However, that opening scene is amazing. The Circle of Life is one of the best Disney songs. Magnificent.

I couldn't help but notice that one of the first movies Shootist checked is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. That probably means it was also placed in a certain upcoming PW movie list. I also may have put this movie on my submitted list. Join the bandwagon, people. iCheckMovies costs money? Fuck that. Hah. The "pro" features are worthless and silly edge things you would never use. It's basically just to give you something for a donation. I would definitely not pay for it.

Shootist also watched all of the X-Men movies. You should be more like him and watch the rest of them with me.

Both very deserving scenes, even though I didn't vote for them.

Fuck Pulp Fiction. That's all I have to say about that.
Seven on the other hand is a brilliant scene (spoilers ahead) - so intense and Brad's unwillingness to believe John Doe , and then the reveal that she was also pregnant. Morgan Freeman trying to talk him down from killing him but the hairs kind of stand up on your neck when you even try to imagine what he's going through in that moment. It's arguably the best scene Fincher ever shot - it's such a perfect conclusion to a crazy movie. I'm happy it made the top five.

Ezekiel 25:17 is the most overrated part of that movie for sure.
I only vaguely recall the box scene. I think it was good, but #4 most iconic scene it is not.

Both of these made my top 10. Pulp Fiction (of course UT , hates it) was number 9. More people have seemed to have gravitated toward the "say what again!" part of the scene over the years which is a pretty comical exchange. Jules unflinching when he shoots Flock Of Seagulls brings it all back though and of course Ezekiel 25:17 is the cherry on top. I can't really add anything else to what UT said about Se7en which was number 10. That ending just had me so drained when I first saw it, just brilliant.

What's in the Box is pretty iconic and probably one of the most recognized and talked about twists of all time. #4 might be a little high is far as pure iconicism goes but I don't think it's egregious either. I don't understand though how someone can watch that scene and only vaguely recall it - it's a scene that stuck with me for a long time after I only seen it once. And one that will forever stick with me after seeing it a bunch of times now.

At least it wasn't talked about to the extent that the Sixth Sense was. Never have seen it because it was spoiled for me only weeks after it's release.

Neither of these scenes made my list, and so on that basis alone I think their overall placement here is high.
But I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy both scenes a lot, so I'm glad they made the list in some fashion. Definitely added an unexpected twist to the Top 5.
Now I have no idea what to expect for the Top 3!

What's in the box is a great scene, but it's not really that iconic. Lets be real here it is WAAAAAAY too high on this list.
Ezekial 25:17 on the other hand is absolutely iconic and is one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. It's one of the most endlessly quoted scenes of all-time, and it made Samuel L. Jackson a household name. It is absolutely deserving of being top 5.

Wow, surprised at ET's ranking. Then again it became the symbol for Spielberg's studio. It was a late cut for my list. ET is absolutely one of the most iconic scenes of all time , the imagery is there but what really sets it apart from most if the beautiful and timeless score. Just listening to that score right now brings you right back to your childhood and instantly makes ME happy. The picture of ET in the front of the bike with Eliot flying is just perfect.
I hate Star Wars but can't deny the iconicness of that scene and quote. I definitely belongs.
The Shower scene I thought was the odds on favorite to win and it won walking away. It damn near doubled up ET in points and beat Star Wars by a considerable margin. I'm not even a huge Psycho fan but I had to vote for this scene for the fact that it's instantly recognizable , it's brilliant in it's symbolism and is the scene that changed horror going forward IMO. I have no problem with it winning.
Thanks to everyone for following the list. I actually really enjoyed doing this one as something different - we will be doing another scene one if a few I think. I'm thinking Movie Deaths in honor of our winner for this countdown - and probably taking the iconic title out of it!

Here's my list. Like a couple others I did a mix of my favourite iconic scenes and my favourite scenes that were iconic to me. A lot of what made the list didn't even cross my mind, or were scenes that I didn't care to add.

3. Water Ripples/T-Rex Escape - Jurassic Park
4. Neo Fights Morpheus - The Matrix

TEN POINTS TO RT for including a Burn After Reading scene. The Burn After Reading scene on my list where Brad Pitt gets shot was better though. However, I just realized there is an even BETTER one I forgot about.
The real bestest best scene from that movie is:
"You're in league with that moronic woman. You are part of a league of morons. Oh, yes. You see, you're one of the morons I've been fighting my whole life. My whole fucking life. But guess what... Today, I win."
Probably the best quote in any movie as well.

I don't like ET that much but I still had Across the Moon on my list. I mean it's Spielberg's friggin logo, how can you not place it.
I am your Father is absolutely iconic and definitely made my list as well. Probably the most iconic twist of all-time
Psycho....Meh. I get that it's an iconic scene but #1. No.....just no.
1. On the Waterfront "I Could Been a Contender" 2.Terminator 2 "I cannot self terminate" 3.Saving Private Ryan- Omaha Beach 4.Blade runner "Tears in Rain" monologue 5.Pulp Fiction "Ezekial 25-17" 6.Schindler's List "I could have got more" 7.Toy Story 3 Ending 8.Good the Bad and The Ugly - Mexican Standoff 9.Good the Bad and the Ugly- Ecstasy of Gold. 10.Star Wars "I am your Father" 11.E.T.- "Across the Moon 12.Goodfellas-"Go home and get your shinebox" 13.Terminator "I'll be Back" 14.Raiders of the Lost Ark-Opening Scene 15.Shawshank Redemption-Escape Scene 16.Gangs of New York- "Whoopsie Daisy!!!" 17.Godfather- Moe Greene special 18.Taxi Driver "You talking to me??" 19.First Blood-"Nothing is over!!" 20.Running Man- "Eat that contract"
My #1 not making the list is arguably the biggest epic fail in the history of these lists. Remember how I said just about everyone does the "You're talking to me" scene in front of the mirror. Well "I Could Been a Contender" is the scene PROFESSIONAL ACTORS do in front of the mirror. It's a scene that changed cinema acting forever. It most notoriously was borrowed by Martin Scorsese for the end of Raging Bull, followed by Paul Anderson borrowing the end of Raging Bull for Boogie Nights (still using the same lines)
Whenever I watch some truly terrible acting (the Captain Marvel trailer comes to mind) this is the clip I watch to remind me what great acting is.
All the rest of my list YMMV but my #1 is easily a no-brainer.

Didn't expect the Star Wars scene to appear, but that's only because it never once entered my head. Not a Star Wars guy, but yeah, obviously a huge scene, a huge twist, and one of the most quoted movie lines ever.
I'm sure the Psycho shower scene was monumental in 1960, but I didn't watch Psycho in the 60s, so it's hard to bring myself to care about that scene. I've watched the movie and the scene was not as good as I anticipated - a victim of overhype. But it did set the tone for all slasher movies, a lot of slasher kills, and that music is chilling. Not a bad #1 placement at all. It's probably the first scene that comes to people's minds when they are asked to name a famous movie scene. And that's what this list is all about.
"I coulda been a contender" is the greatest scene ever for (old) movie buffs and film students. That scene and the film as a whole never breached the mainstream like Singing in the Rain, Gone with the Wind, etc. I do think that scene is overrated. Is it a great acting performance? Absolutely. Is it such a great acting performance that it triumps over all over great acting scenes that have ever been acted as some people claim? Hardly. It's in the same league as Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction, Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver, and so on in terms of great acting and character work. The same league. Not ten leagues above. Not even one league above. I think of "I coulda been a contender" as the "Hard Times" of movie scenes. Dusty Rhodes' "Hard Times" is a great promo, I can appreciate that, but it's not leagues ahead of every other great wrestling promo, never to be matched, never to be even approached, as its advocates would have you believe.

1. Bench Scene - Good Will Hunting 2. Mufasa's Death - The Lion King 3. Affleck speech on construction site - Good Will Hunting 4. Opening Scene - Scream 5. Outburst - 12 Angry Men 6. Boxing Scene - City Lights 7. The Big Reveal - Oldboy 8. Death by Arrows - Throne of Blood 9. God Complex Speech - Malice 10. Final Scene - Saw 11. Do you speak English, motherfucker? - Pulp Fiction 12. Atticus Finch's Closing Statement - To Kill A Mockingbird 13. Alonzo Introducion - Training Day 14. Final Scene - The Truman Show 15. Fight with Shere Khan - The Jungle Book (animated version) 16. Prom Murders - Carrie 17. Final Scene - The Mist 18. Final Scene - Witness For The Prosecution 19.
