So after all the hassle there wasn’t a good HQ reference photo for Donkey Kong.

Luckily I had a back up plan and got Dhalsim from Street Fighter instead 🧘‍♂️

I actually think that turned out better. The DKC one could have been amazing, but I'd imagine it would have been a pain to do it justice with all the colours and background. Dhalsim still has that retro 90s appeal but it looks cooler with his skeleton necklace.

Yeah he was just going to do this part of it but needed more detailed artwork which is hard to find for pixelated 90’s game characters 😂


Sure is, my friends and I would try to play Dhalsim in SFIV as a joke because we found him so slow and difficult to use. SFV comes out and i decide to give him a try....ends up being my main 😂

Mega Man 2 is an essential platformer. I'd put it right up there with Super Mario Bros and Sonic 2 as far as essential platformers.

Yoshi's Island is still king.

King at being 2nd best to Super Mario World.

Super Mario World is a classic, but it's basically 'Mario Bros 3 but bigger' the game. Yoshi's Island made better sense of exploring the levels and justifying the bigger stages. Yoshi is also one of the best platformers in history, Dixie Kong, Peach and Shinobi are the only other characters that can challenge for the mantle. It took three dimensions for Mario to wrestle back his crown.

Mega Man games are way too hard for me. I've tried. If I had played them as a kid, it would be a different story.

World map is infinitely better in SMW, level secrets, various hidden levels, Star Road, bonus road, bosses, the various Yoshi's with color's actually mattering (including Blue Yoshi, the best version of Yoshi in any game). Yoshi's Island was as close to SMW as SMW was to SMB3, if not closer. Shrunk down Mario for an annoying game long mechanic and made eggs your critical attack, then outside of the few form changes, pretty quintessential Mario. Worlds felt fairly similar.

Yoshi's Island was fun, and credit for being as experimental with certain stages, everything didn't quite meld as perfectly, mishmash of ideas that don't all quite stick the landing, the march from level to level certainly didn't come close to the richness of the SMW map. SMW map felt like a thing to explore and unlock, not just a stop gap between levels.

I like the map in Super Mario World as well, but outside of giving players the option to blaze through the entire game if they want to, it's largely just a cosmetic addition. Both games have bonus levels, Mario World's are just easier to unlock, but I don't think they do as good a job as engaging the player as Yoshi's completion method.

The bosses in Yoshi's Island are better. Forgetting the fact that Mario World largely recycles the same bosses from three, the fact it doubles if not triples up on the same mechanic in true Mario fashion is a flaw. The bosses in Yoshi's Island are more creative, there's more variety and Baby Bowser was a far more satisfying resolution than Bowser in a Clown Ship.

Mario World expands on ideas that existed in Mario Bros 3. Even the invention of Yoshi was similar to the Kuriboh Shoe, which the player would steal command of once they removed the Goomba from it. The only real change the game made was that Metroidvania mechanic where you could unlock blocks which would make levels easier to complete. Yoshi controls completely different to Mario, there's more emphasis on exploring the levels and collecting items and the health mechanic which you alluded to changes the way players react to taking damage. It's less about the player and more about protecting your precious cargo, which makes for tense situations. For mine, Yoshi is in it's own sub-genre of platformers like the Wario Land games where the levels are less linear and designed around completing mini-challenges to 100% complete the level.

Plus, we can both agree that Dragon Coins suck, yeah? One of a few launch game design choices that doesn't age well.

Same. I like the idea behind them more than the product. Think id rent one, beat a few levels and grow frustrated. Love the X series though.

I'm loving this SMW banter. Giving me flashbacks to weekends spent at neighbors and in best friend's basement playing SNES and crushing whatever we crushed before Mountain Dew registered on our radar.

Yoshi's Island sucks, actually I haven't played it in forever, so I'm probably due another playthrough. Super Mario World, on the other hand, is, was, and will always be the greatest game of all-time.

Mario World is probably at least top 3 as far as games with Mario World in the title. Respect.
