Thanks for having me on again Phillip. It was fun even if I did kind of blank on the Dream Match question I've only answered like 50 times on this very forum  King Kong Bundy was mentioned a few times and towards the end I namedropped the mysterious Mouse de la Mieux, though you'll have to wait until next time to get the full scoop.

Loving this episode. One of my favorites to-date. It deserves more feedback than I have multitasking bandwidth to give it while also listening, so I'm having to rely on my memory. IMO Baker-man has and has always had impeccable taste in pro wrestling. Based on Baker-man's favorite feuds (Bret/Austin and Flair/Funk), it seems surly Texans feuding with in-ring technicians is a thing he gets behind. Wondering if you stuck with WWE long enough to see Eddie vs. JBL? I don't recall much about it, but wonder how it stacks up. With Honky and the Hart Foundation being some of the original favorites, I was so glad to hear you call out Jimmy Hart on your Mt. Rushmore of wrestling managers. I feel like Jimmy's talents and contributions to the business are so underrated. Generally just loving this conversation so much. Wishing Baker-man's podcast had turned into something more than just three minutes of what-coulda-been. Also, especially given our relative closeness in age and geographic origins, I feel like I want to start up a co-hoster podcast with Baker-man. Even if it's only once a month, quarter, year... or once, period. "Baking Pies" or some other punny play on our usernames. Because branding is IMPORTANT! Anyway... I too am clueless of modern product, and would've been right there with you in having to keep shit nostalgic to keep pace. The pandemic breaking #NWAPowerrr was probably the last active gasp for me. Since then, wrestling to me has been all about looking backwards as far and as deep as I can. Kama was definitely no Papa Shango. Despite the initial brain fart for the dream match segment, the worst offense was pduh no-selling King Kong Bundy's Waking Condominium nickname. Then you guys warmed up and dropped a lot of dream matches and feuds that have me feeling pangs of regret about my and your draft rosters. At least you can still run Savage vs. Funk! My memory is failing me now, but there's a very real and high chance I relisten to this episode again soon. Man I just want to podcast shoot the shit about pro wrestling with the Baker-man! Good shit, guys. Good shit.

Just completely pretend everything is real again. Hardly anyone cares about wrestling these days, just be goofy with it.
System steering DIS BUSINESS in the right direction.

Thanks for the feedback 🤯 Of course this JBL fanboy was still around for JBL vs. Eddie. Excellent feud! Never thought of the "surly Texans vs. excellent in ring technicians" similarities in my two favorite feuds, but you are spot on. In addition to the dream match debacle I would also like to rescind British Bulldog as a "should have been world champion." Again, I just blurted out the first name that came to mind to avoid awkward dead air. It only works in the scenario I laid out (Bulldog as a face winning the title in England/Europe for a brief reign) but there are still lots of better choices. I always feel extremely awkward when pduh asks me modern wrestling questions. Last time I faked it as best I could. This time I didn't even try beyond putting over Lacey "Evans is it?" in another brain fart, Thunder Rosa, and Bianca Belair. I'm always *this close* to doing another solo podcast. I had something cool planned out during my 1987 fanfic draft/match review binge. But I never went through with it. I wouldn't be against doing a joint show with 🤯 one day.

🤯 I rated Jimmy Hart above Heenan for the longest time (and still do when I'm being honest) because Hart's men actually got the job done while it took a long time for Heenan's men to wear gold. I got way too excited when pduh brought up Papa Shango. You can probably hear the marking out in my voice. I haven't listened to it yet because... I hate my podcast voice. It's way too breathy. Now I understand why I had this conversation with my old boss multiple times when he called.... What have you been doing? Just get back from a run? No. Why? You sound out of breath. Happened with my parents a few times as well. Apparently that is just how I talk over the phone? Now I also understand why my early 2000s friends said I sounded like a Valley Girl. That hasn't changed.

This settles it then as far as I'm concerned. Some day, no hard commitment on when, we'll hook it up and start Baking Pies! #DIMES Pains me to hear you backtrack on Bulldog. I loved that as a unique shout. I demand you stand by it! For me, I like the shoulda-been world champ to always be constrained with parameters to make the answers more interesting. So shoulda-been WWF Champions, for instance, mitigates those Mr. Perfect AWA title and Rick Rude WCW International title loopholes. It also then makes it easier to decide what would've worked in real time. The "when" being feasible always matters to me. So, like cliché as they might be as answers, Owen and DiBiase work because in late 1994 and early 1988 they work respectively as slightly longer term champions to the bridge the gap back to Bret and Hogan (or maybe Savage or Warrior?). So, back to Bulldog, I could see SummerSlam 1992 just as easily as being his moment to win the world title instead of the IC title. Granted, in this universe I think I'd prefer to have him beating Flair for the belt instead of Savage... So maybe that means Flair somehow retains at WrestleMania against Hogan? Then, Bulldog can either just drop it back to Flair stateside. Or he pisses hot and we panic pivot on the last Saturday Night's Main Event, where he drops the belt to non-steroided IC Champ Bret in a title vs. title match. Bret vacated IC title, which Shawn wrestles a returning Marty Jannetty for or something. I dunno... And of course I love and a million percent agree with your Goldust shout. If Vader isn't getting the belt at SummerSlam 1996, then it's absolutely Goldust by October or November 1996.

Goldust as a character in 95 96 is really an overlooked part of wrestling history. He's the true founding father of the Attitude Era, IMO. Pushing the edge half a year before Austin 3:16, Hogan as the Third Man, or Pillman has a gun.

The whole reason I awkwardly blurted out Bulldog in the first place is because all the guys who rapidly popped into my head (Luger, Vader, Perfect, Rude, Windham) didn't count. I'm just so used to a WWF-centric way of looking at wrestling. We'll do a podcast together. Pick a date. Something towards the end of the month. Saturday, Sunday, or Monday nights work best for me. EDIT: As 🤯 probably knows by now Goldust was going to beat Michaels for the WWF Championship in my New Generation fanfic and hold the title from November 96-January 97. Goldust getting nuclear heat at Survivor Series '95 is also moment I decided I wanted to become a pro wrestler. But not just any kind of pro wrestler. A bad guy pro wrestler. Like Andy Kaufman in Man On The Moon.

I'll hit you up with a PM at some point to plot further to spare pduh the pain of seeing the hostile takeover coming from a mile away. I can only imagine Baker-man as a 1995 Goldust slash Andy Kaufman style pro wrestling heel being too awesome to actually imagine. It would definitely have drawn all my dimes, that's all I know for sure.

pduh will always be the PW podcast king. 🤯 and I are just a lowly developmental brand with only one show planned. If I ever get back to that pro wrestling "career" thread I started the other day inspired by @ness I'll cover my pro wrestling dream persona and tell the tale of wrestling as Goldust in Original Baker's basement.

EDIT: As 🤯 probably knows by now Goldust was going to beat Michaels for the WWF Championship in my New Generation fanfic and hold the title from November 96-January 97. Sneaky edit! I didn't even catch this part. I'm sure you shared the outline of the plan beyond WMXII, and this is likely the part I most hated you for not giving me in full. But this is the exact spot where a Goldust run probably works best in real life. Convince Dustin to keep pushing the envelope with the trade off being he gets the world title. That's why he started simmering things down, right? He didn't like all the heat he was getting in the business but also in media outlets beyond pro wrestling? I can't recall, but I'm sure he'd sell his soul and double down if it meant a world title run. Anyway, I probably go Goldust vs. Shawn in an innocuous title match at IYH October '96 (redubbed In Your House: Curtain Call maybe?) with a non-finish. Goldust gets under Shawn's skin by calling him out on escaping two PPVs in a row with the world title without actually defeating his opponents. So we run Goldust/Shawn II at Survivor Series '96 just to see if the MSG crowd roots for a heel prime Goldust over HBK. Maybe add an "anything goes" stipulation, to really allow Goldust to push the envelope, but also to protect Shawn? Anyway, Goldust wins the belt after low-blowing Shawn into submission. Shawn takes December off to heel his gonads and ego. Goldust defends against a returning Bret at IYH December (maybe this one is rebranded Curtain Call instead?) thanks to Austinterferencr. Shawn returns for the rubber match at Royal Rumble '97 inside a cage in his hometown of San Antonio, where the Texas fans have zero problem rooting for their boy HBK to play a game of "Smear the Queer". Shawn regains the gold, and Goldust pivots into a program with Rocky for WrestleMania if he stays heel or maybe starts to turn face thanks to a feud with Jerry Lawler.

Ya know I kinda wanna watch through all of 96. The only "news" worthy DVD commentary that gets covered is Shawn's win, Austin 316 and Survivor Series. But there seems like a lot of good shit. Mankind's first year seemed pretty good for a newcomer outside the company who was way different.

Thinking about how weird the male stripper gimmick was for Shawn. Like how was that ever gonna get over? And yet despite the goofiness he was at least taken seriously. That's the thing I hated about his second run. After that initial fluke 1 month reign I never once took ANYTHING he did seriously. I came close at that Raw 2003 match, but other than that I could never buy in to anything he did in the ring. Because I know it's not gonna lead anywhere. He's not winning the belt, he'll have a great match sure but who gives a shit?
Maybe that's why people love the Mania matches with Taker so much. Finally a reason they could buy into him for once. You can the streak without being the guy, so it wouldn't be completely out of nowhere had they given it to him. Builds a good IWC NEWZ story of HBK never having changed because he POLITIKD his way to stardom while at the same time borderline being course for business if we are truly to believe he's a candidate for GOAT. Like if you polled I'm sure a good portion of the WWE would say he or Flair are GOAT. See now I wanna rebook it. Ending the streak doesn't have to be about a monster push. They want Mania Moments, right? That's all the streak could ever be. Yet we as fans don't want them to do it for fear of messing up. Reasons like that are the few ways I agree with the carnies.
