That sucks, but isn't that the average male age to die in the US? For a wrestler that seems pretty good sadly...

He seemed like such a tough motherfucker part of me was honestly convinced he'd never pass.
So this is gutting in a way.
Long live the one true king.

For me one of the definitive guys I think of when I think World Heavyweight Champion. This picture from those glorious PWI photo specials says it all:

Caught the tail end of his career. Got to see him wrestle Haku live at the Royal Rumble 89. Too bad I can not remember it. Then again as a manager at Fall Brawl 93.
RIP

Damn. Just a few weeks back I mentioned a desire to watch more Harley Race. Always dug his style. Harley was my first brush with wrestling royalty and one of my favorite wrestlers when I began watching wrestling in 1987. Great wrestler. Greater facial hair.
RIP King.

I’m too young to have ever watched him but PW helped me connect to this guy and I’ve seen and read things about this guy. The wrestlers who we consider legends have all posted their condolences to his family and a common theme has been that he was their mentor. So the guys we grew up watching all give their respect to this man for helping them become who they are. From Ted Dibisse to Vader to Sgt. Slaughter. It’s an incredible list and Race seemed to have been an incredible person to them. A bad ass too.
RIP HARLEY.

How much you all want to bet Ric Flair cried one he got word? Yeah what a pussy for crying when one of his greatest mentors and friends dies. You're a fucking moron and say some of the dumbest shit. RIP Harley. Tried as much as I can to catch up on his work and will continue to do so.

I can't think of any wrestler who carried themselves with more credibility than Harley Race. While Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair became icons of the industry, Harley brought that earnestness that's important and made his matches that more engaging. It was appropos that the first ever PPV saw him once and for all pass the torch to Flair. Truthfully I haven't seen that much of Harley. I believe he took one of the earliest table bumps, but really the only match I've seen in full was a NWA World Championship match against Kevin Von Erich in World Class. I thought it was a really tight match as well, not an ounce of fat and it was an extremely easy match to follow, even for somebody who was watching decades after the fact.

Hell he even cried when Kevin Nash did the Arn Anderson parody. Big man calling me a moron behind a computer terminal. Hopefully there is no problem?

He was well before my time. Even looking back at his matches I always kinda wondered what all the hoopla was about. There was one match I did see though that I really liked, back when they launched the NWA Classics On Demand deal they had Harley vs Andre from the 70's or possibly early 80's, not only did Harley body slam Andre he did it on the fucking concrete floor. That's fucking extreme bro. RIP

Chris Hero posted up an old Observer interview with Frank Gotch where he called Harley out for being a 'kamikaze' and doing too much. It goes to show how cyclical that point is and just when you think one act has gone too far, the next generation finds a new way to surpass it.
