The first episode of NWA Powerrr is free on YouTube. I watched some of it last night after a recommendation from one of my wrestler friends and I have to say I like what I’ve seen so far. They went full old school and captured what made NWA so great. Very intimate and fun.

Yeah, this was a great watch and I'll be checking it out every week. Just an easily digestible hour with a great look and feel.

I might have to give this a watch (as there isn't enough weekly wrestling /s), doubt I'll watch weekly but it won't hurt to at least check it out.

Currently in love with this show. I would've never ventured to guess in a million years that I'd enjoy a Dokken song...
Among some new faces to me, Ricky Starks stood out and I think he showed a lot of potential.
Loving Aron Stevens and his no eye contact shtick, the Adult Swim-style commercials and the overall retro feel of the show.

Watched Episode 5 on a whim tonight. Glad I did. It was my first time seeing this fed. Good stuff. This promotion is right up my alley. I am now #TeamNWA all the way in the Great Wrestling War of 2019. Why are people talking about crap like WWE, AEW, New Japan, and ROH (lol j/k nobody talks about ROH) when this fed is RIGHT THERE?!? Plan on watching all their other shows over the next few days.

I’m all about Tim Storm and Aron Stevens. Also that Dokken intro and the wacky commercials (Tony Falk!). I love how just about everybody in this fed cuts a good promo. Watched Episodes 1, 2, 5 and wrote about them in the Match Review thread. Check it out.

Look, I realize I'm coming across as a total fanboy. Guilty as charged! I love this promotion so much. I didn't even think the last episode was all that good. Yet I rewatched much of it and have spent a lot of time over the past 2 days reading and watching a bunch of NWA-related hot takes, the bulk of which have been overwhelmingly positive. I even signed into Youtube for the sole purpose of 'liking' a bunch of NWA Powerrr-related videos. And I rarely actually sign into my Youtube account! I want this promotion to succeed so bad. I'm ordering the pay per view. If they come anywhere near Baltimore, I'm there. I haven't been so enamored with a wrestling promotion since 2005 OVW. It's so cool to actually CARE about wrestling again. I honestly never thought that day would come. Nor did I ever think another wrestling promotion would win me over. Yet here I am actually looking forward to a wrestling show in 2019. It took over a decade, but the venerable old NWA has finally brought me back. Here are 10 reasons why NWA Powerrr rules, and why you should be watching it.....
1. Presentation- I love the vibe of this show. In fact, it was the general aesthetic which first grabbed my attention. So many of the "anti-WWE" promotions to come along since WCW went out of business just look like WWE-lite. This includes AEW and prime TNA. NWA Powerrr is like something from a completely different universe. There is nothing "WWE" about it. Powerrr is a loving homage to the studio shows of the 80s. They get so many little details right. Even the graphics and Dokken(!) opening theme are pure 80s.
One of the more polarizing aspects of this show, even among its fans, is the lack of entrance music. Yep. That's right. No entrance music! You'd think it would be jarring. After all, WWE has used entrance music for 99% of its 'stars' since (I think) Summerslam 1989. And since WWF is the worldwide leader in sports entertainment, every other promotion followed. But I honestly didn't even notice it until halfway through the first episode I watched. It's definitely different. And I do think they should use entrance music on PPV (at least for Aldis and maybe another specially selected wrestler or two), or if they ever start running big arenas. But, in the current format, I actually kind of like it. The lack of entrance themes helps the show breeze along at a rapid pace. Think about how much time other promotions spend on just showing wrestlers walking to the ring. Again, entrances and themes DO have a purpose. I am not against them. But, for now, in the current format, I don't mind the lack of long entrances accompanied by music.
It's not JUST an 80s nostalgia trip. They obviously have modern wrestlers. They also have.....
2. Humor- Jim Cornette is wrong about a lot things. One of these things is his hatred of comedy in wrestling. There is definitely a place for it. Jim should know. After all, he was involved in A LOT of comedic segments himself. Anyway, NWA Powerrr does comedy the right way. Most notably in their HILARIOUS fake commercials. "The Pride of Paducah" Tony Falk is a bah gawd national treasure (sorry, Nick) who would probably get the biggest pop in NWA Powerrr history if he ever showed up in the studio. Then you have The Question Mark(!) and his gloriously insane vignettes. This absurdist "modern" humor gives it an identity beyond "80s tribute show." And I can't forget about Aron "Damien Sandow" Stevens, who is hilarious in a more traditional "annoying" heel sort of way.
3. The Roster- Yeah, it doesn't look all that impressive on paper. But somehow it just WORKS. Almost all the wrestlers they use fit perfectly into the little universe they've created. As I mentioned earlier, I've been reading and watching a lot of commentary on this fed. The diversity of favorites is vast. WWE has like 400 wrestlers under contract. Yet it's the same 20 or so names that pop up on every single favorites list. NWA Powerrr has like 20 major wrestlers. I've seen nearly all of them mentioned as somebody's favorite. I happen to be an Aron Stevens, Tim Storm, Nick Aldis guy. Lots of other folks are major backers of Eli Drake, Thunder Rosa, and Kamille. Then you a sizable amount of Eddie Kingston, Colt Cabana, James Storm fans. Trevor Murdoch, of all people, is winning a lot of folks over. And of course EVERYBODY loves The Question Mark. There are very few NWA Powerrr wrestlers who haven't clicked with its fanbase.
Now this small roster can easily turn into a negative down the line. I am well aware of this. The trick will be to cycle folks in and out. I'd like to see about 4 or 5 new 'stars' come in at every tv taping.
4. Unpredictability- "Anything can happen in WWF!" was a pre-Attitude Era WWF cliche that I (lovingly) mock a lot in my wrestling writing. It was obviously not true. Only complete idiots like myself could possibly talk themselves into thinking Sal Sincere was going to upset Shawn Michaels. And things reverted back to the norm following the Attitude Era, where things often got a little TOO crazy. Yet you get the feeling that anything really CAN happen in NWA Powerrr. I genuinely have no idea where any of the storylines are going, and I love it. About half the roster is sitting on the fence, straddling the line between face and heel. So many people could go either way. It's very soap opera-ish with all the major players seemingly playing the long game. I personally have always loved the soap opera aspect of wrestling, and agreed with the immortal words of somebody from back in the Attitude Era (Vince, I think) who said "wrestling is a soap opera for men." NWA has brought that soap opera aspect back to wrestling in the best possible way.
One of the more low level storylines on the last episode was Aron Stevens quitting. Now obviously a wrestler "quitting" is a work 99% of the time. And I'm pretty sure Stevens will be back. But I'm not entirely sure. That suspension of disbelief is there. This is basically a part time promotion. Aron Stevens really is working on a Hollywood career (he was in the rebooted Magnum PI). So it's POSSIBLE he just came in for one set of tv tapings to put over top prospect Ricky Starks as a favor to his friends. I guess NWA's low profile also helps. If, say, Finn Balor "quit" WWE we'd know where it was heading within hours due to all the people covering WWE. But NWA is small enough right now to where it's not a major priority for wrestling writers. Does that make sense?
Anyway, my dream payoff for this storyline is for Aron Stevens to come back as The Question Mark to do something dastardly to Ricky Starks. Which reminds me, there is so much they can do with the Question Mark gimmick.
And that's just one relatively low level storyline. The world title picture is a jumbled mess (in a good way) with all the major players jockeying for position and I have no idea how it's going to play out.
5. Booking/Storytelling- It's actually kind of amazing how quickly they introduced and ESTABLISHED so many characters. Within two episodes I knew the motivations and personality traits of practically everyone on entire roster. Prior to NWA Powerrr, Tim Storm, Nick Aldis, and Eli Drake were just names I was vaguely aware of due to seeing them online a few times. I had never seen any of these people in action, and honestly didn't really care to. Yet within ONE episode I was fully invested in Storm & Aldis, and had an interest in the charismatic Eli Drake.
I love their slow burn approach to things. It reminds me of the pre-Attitude Era wrestling I grew up on where the tv shows were just build-build-build-build to the PPV payoff when pay per views only occurred 4 or 5 times a year. It made those shows seem like the biggest, most important thing in the world. NWA is doing a great job in bringing back that anticipation.
One of the biggest storylines is literally "will Kamille speak?" And people are deeply invested in this! It's like THE most popular topic of conversation among the NWA Powerrr fanbase. If you think about it, "Will Valet X speak?" is just the dumbest thing. Without context, it seems so "small." But they've built it up as this HUGE, almost 3rd Man/Higher Power-level moment.
That's not to say the booking has been perfect. I have criticized quite a few things in my Match Review threads. But they got me more invested in ONE EPISODE than any other promotion had done in an entire decade.
6. The Matches- This is admittedly the most polarizing NWA "plus." I love the fact that the matches are short and sweet. Regular matches are generally under 5 minutes. Their main purpose is to establish a hierarchy, establish feuds, and further the storylines. Main events typically run a little longer. Usually about 7-12 minutes. So if 30 minute matches with wrestlers trading 450 Thunder Phoenix Power Drivers for a hundred nearfalls is your thing, than NWA Powerrr isn't going to be for you.
There has yet to be anything even approaching a great match, either by my standards, or those of the Meltzerians. The best bouts so far were Aldis/T. Storm from Episode 1 and Cabana/J. Storm from Episode 4, but even those matches were honestly flawed, and top out at *** at best. I'm not sure they will ever produce a great match. And you know what? They don't have to.
7. The Pacing- All episodes so far have been between 46-58 minutes. It's a breezy watch with quick matches and constant rapid fire promos interspersed with surreal commercials and vignettes. It never gets boring. And even a less good episode is over within an hour. No 2 or 3 hour slog here. Every single show so far (even the less good ones) have ended with me wanting more. When was the last time you could say that about Raw or Smackdown? The aforementioned lack of overblown entrances (which I love! don't get me wrong!) also helps with the pacing. Though I do think they do a few too many recaps, and replay certain "commercials" a bit too much.
8. The Promos- Good god, the promos! This promotion is full of great talkers. It was the general vibe which initially sold me on this fed, but it was the promos that truly got me hooked. Almost all the wrestlers getting pushed have mic skillz, with a few (Stevens, Aldis, T. Storm, Drake, Kingston) being genuine mic masters. The one thing WWE should definitely steal from NWA is the promo style. Every single 'star' other than Caleb Konley (who is basically just there Aldo/Bob Holly JTTS guy) regularly gets interview time. It gives the viewer at home a chance to become familiar with all these characters and their motivations. Promos tend to be short and sweet, much like the matches. No revolving door of the same main eventers delivering long, boring, 20 minutes soliloquies. Rumor has it NWA Powerrr promos are not scripted*. Inevitably some will sink. But all have swam so far. A particular highlight was Eli Drake's improv on the latest episode. A lesser performer would have become flustered. But Eli shut it down and owned that promo with some glorious crowd control.
*I honestly don't care whether promos are scripted or not. I just want to hear good promos. Couldn't care less how they got there. BUT hatred of scripted promos has been an internet talking point for a long time. So I figured I'd mention it.
9. Something Different- I touched on this a little bit earlier. So many of the "anti-WWE" feds look like WWE lite, or worse. Similar presentation. Similar match style (ok, so this was actually WWE stealing from everybody else, but the end result is the same). NWA Powerrr is something completely different. It is truly unique in the modern wrestling landscape.
10. Dokken- Into The Fire- 'nuff said.
*I could have kept this going. I only scratched the surface on individual wrestlers and storylines. Just watch the damn show already!

Just watched the first episode, it was great.
Back to basics wrestling that wasn’t overbooked, was more invested in the Tim Storm VS Nick Aldis match from the build just from the build in the video than I have fueds with weeks of build.
Hoping the rest of it follows suit.

This show just keeps getting better and better. I love having Tuesdays off work now. I havent bought a PPV since Royal Rumble 2016 but im definitely paying for Into the Fire to help support the product.
Becoming a huge mark for Thunder Rosa. My gf isn't a fan of anything wrestling outside of watching GLOW but even she enjoys Rosa.
I'd like to see them pair up James Storm and Trevor Murdoch in the future. I've always thought they'd make a perfect tag team and have fantasy booked them together in the past. Storm's a better face than heel imo anyways.
Like Baker said, the most impressive thing to me is how weak the roster looks on paper but they make everyone matter and they fit the show perfectly. I can't wait for the next episode.

I havent bought a PPV since Royal Rumble 2016 but im definitely paying for Into the Fire to help support the product. Same here. Except I haven't actually bought a pay per view from home since waaaaaay back at Backlash 2004. That's how hyped I am about this product. The crazy thing is I'm this hyped despite the fact that they haven't even announced a single match, and I honestly have no idea where they're going. This PPV card could go in a million different directions. But I'm fantasy booking it anyway (winners in bold)..... 8. Nick Aldis (c) w/ Kamille vs. Eli Drake- 10 Pounds of Gold Match
7. James Storm (c) vs. Tim Storm- National Championship Match6. Wild Cards (c) vs. Rock & Roll Express- Tag Title Match5. Allysin Kay w/ Ashley Vox vs. Thunder Rosa w/ Marti Belle- Women's Title Match4. Colt Cabana vs. Mr. Anderson- Grudge Match3. Ricky Starks vs. Aron Stevens- Grudge Match2. Trevor Murdoch vs. ?The Question Mark?- Comedy Match1. Outlaw Inc. vs. Dawsons- No DQ #1 Contenders Match*Austin Idol & Tony Falk appear. Preferably together in the same segment s8. The only person I want to see Aldis lose the belt to is Tim Storm. Have him E Li Drake and everyone else until T. Storm somehow earns one last shot (we really mean it this time!). No idea how Kamille factors in to all this. I'm not even going to hazard a guess where they're going with that. But she definitely remains a major player. 7. The booking of James Storm has been one of the weakest parts of this show imo. Don't know why he was a face the first week and a heel ever since. Also don't think he should have lost the belt to Cabana so soon. Therefore I'm hot shotting it back to Storm to build him up as Aldis' next PPV challenger. Continue Tim Storm's losing streak until he magically regains his mojo somewhere down the line. 6. Wild Cards suck imo. Give the Rock & Rolls a feel good moment. Then BAM! Outlaw Inc. turns on them to become super heels at the next set of tapings. 5. Kay is alright but Thunder Rosa is definitely The One when it comes to their women's division. She needs to win the belt asap. Maybe do a double turn here. 3. & 4. Colt is gonna be real busy over the next few weeks to set this up. I'd have Stevens interfere (preferably as The Question Mark) to cost Starks his inevitable National Title match with Cabana. That would set up the big Starks/Stevens blowoff. Then I'd have Anderson turn on Cabana in a Colt/J. Storm rematch. Anderson has been real quiet thus far. Just there lurking in the background as Colt's (unexplained) buddy. He's better as a heel and a Cabana feud would give him a purpose. 2. Murdoch/Mark is just a comedy match. Maybe make it for a contract.....even thought Trevor is already a regular lol 1. Outlaw Inc. win decisively. Could use some blood if NWA is willing to go down that route. *Austin Idol and Tony Falk simply must appear. Hilarity ensues. Can't wait for Tuesday. It has rapidly become my most anticipated day of the week.

They should be building him up better, instead each week feels like another step back so far. I enjoyed Cabana getting his shine, but yeah - way too soon. Aldis vs. Storm rivalry seemed like a natural progression to me and Aldis would be much better suited for the heel turn. I mean their in Georgia for christs sake and James Storm's not a babyface? He could be the common man - Aldis wears suits and has a British accent. It's Great Value Rhodes vs. Flair, c'mon! Outlaw Inc. vs. RnR Express I'd be down for. Corny then gets to remind everyone that he warned us about them being from a dangerous background and that they're unpredictable. Seems like that'd be a possible next step in their development. Only problem with that I can foresee is that I feel the tag division already has too many heel teams. "Tim Storm is my wrestling dad" is now probably my favorite tweet ever btw. I'd fucking buy that shirt.

I can't wait to sit down and get caught up on this.
Cable is being connected today at the rental, so here's hoping by this weekend I'm caught up.
Question for you gents following so far:
What free agent name(s) would you love to see pop up in NWA?
Aside from wanting Jazz back as NWA Women's Champion, my biggest want would be Ryback.

Just watched the first episode, it was great. Back to basics wrestling that wasn’t overbooked, was more invested in the Tim Storm VS Nick Aldis match from the build just from the build in the video than I have fueds with weeks of build. Yeah, it's amazing how well quickly, and how well, they built Aldis/T. Storm. In less than one episode they had me invested in a match between two wrestlers I was only dimly aware of a day earlier. Other promotions could learn a lot from just that one episode. It sold me on both guys, and the promotion as a whole. I haven't wavered since. At first glance I just assumed Aldis would be another Flair/HHH clone. (He wore suits. He had a dash of arrogance. He even had his own Chyna. Plus he was *gasp* English!) And that would have been fine. It's a proven winner of a gimmick. But I actually LOVE the fact that they didn't go down the obvious route. He's been more of a Bret Hart style fighting babyface champ who also just so happens to also be a fancy boy that loves the high life. Aside from Flair's rare forays into babyfacedom, I don't remember ever seeing something like this before. I personally hope Nick remains a babyface, or at least a face-leaning tweener, for a long, long time. You could argue he hasn't done a single heelish thing yet. Hell, I could even argue he's been a bigger babyface than admitted paragon of virtue Tim Storm. Yeah, that's right. A bigger good guy than TIM f'n STORM! Remember, the saintly Storm resorted to a low blow against The Real World Champ. Aldis didn't not cheat, and he won the match fair and square. There was also that interview where Nick explained Kamille had only ever interfered one time, and that was to counter somebody else (Brandi Rhodes) who interfered first. Another time Kamille wanted to interfere unprovoked, but Nick wouldn't allow it. The only argument for Nick as a heel (imo) is the Kamille situation. But I'm giving Nick the benefit of the doubt here. After all, he has offered Kamille the chance to speak many times. Kamille has always declined. I'm going to chalk up this whole "controversy" to that muckraking purveyor of clickbait, Joe Galli. I definitely get where you're coming from with Aldis as Flair and J. Storm as Dusty. But James Storm works for me whether he's a heel or face, and I love Aldis subverting the fancy boy heel trope. So I have no problem with their current alignments. You're right about too many heel teams if Outlaw Inc. turns though. That goes back to what I wrote earlier about hoping they're always cycling wrestlers in and out. Maybe drop the Dawsons for the next set of tv tapings and bring in a new babyface duo to even out the numbers. J. Storm/Kingston is a feud I wanted to see down the line. They're similar in promo style and character, but they come at it from different directions. That would be a natural feud imo. And now you have just given me the idea to make it doubly good by including Trevor (and Homicide). I'd be down for Outlaw Inc. vs. Redneck Wrecking Crew (hat tip to 🤯 on the name) somewhere down the line. I can't wait to sit down and get caught up on this. Cable is being connected today at the rental, so here's hoping by this weekend I'm caught up. Question for you gents following so far: What free agent name(s) would you love to see pop up in NWA? Aside from wanting Jazz back as NWA Women's Champion, my biggest want would be Ryback. Do it! No cable required. Every episode is up for free on Youtube. But I'll warn you. If you watch one you won't want to stop. NWA Powerrr: It's addicting. I did a post on this in another thread. Came up with 8 names (+ Bully Ray and Somebody Else who I forgot to mention in my post). But a lot of those wrestlers are honestly under contract....somewhere. Ryback was one of the names on my list. NWA Powerrr lacks a right proper badass hoss right now. Ryback would fill that role nicely. Didn't think of Jazz but she'd definitely be a good fit (assuming she can still go). An old badass vs. young badass feud with Thunder Rosa would be cool. Plus she was a recent NWA Women's Champ iirc. So the history is already there. Edit: Rewatching Nick's promo from the beginning of Episode 1. So good! National Treasure, indeed. The Real World Champ is legit.

William Patrick Corgan announced a second NWA show this morning. Looks like it's going to be a cross between Tough Enough and NXT. Here is The Man himself explaining The Circle Squared....
Be back later for the 2nd NWA Powerrr party thread.

Casual racism from Jim Cornette means I'm done with even pretending this show exists.

What the actual fuck, Jim?
The episode was pulled. How it even got uploaded in the first place is crazy.
Like...why can’t we have one nice thing?

Cornette trending in Australia, I thought it was the Ice Cream brand Cornetto at first glance. I just started watching Power, wtf 😂

They were talking about this on the radio. Obviously they are fans of wrestling as the topic was more on it wasn't that big a deal (true) and how PW is held to this weird standard from people despite it being goofy fun. Oh well should've said turkey to bring it back to the holidays.

This was only a matter of time and as an avid listener of his podcast, hardly a once off. On his last podcast he described Justin Roberts as a pedophile because he's always happy. This is the first time since his WWF run where he's really said anything professionally and I presume that will be his job which according to Jim on a prior podcast, won't really bother him.
It does remind me of that bit from 'Atlanta' where they contemplated whether 'caught you red handed' was actually a racist dig at Native Americans. Even if Jim didn't mean anything by it, he really ought to think about the connotations.
