Cornette is one of my favourite wrestling people but holy shit. No one is going to try to defend this. Shame for NWA Power to lose an announcer at that level. The Experience will be interesting this week, I wonder if he'll own it.

He's such a fucking idiot. I can't believe NWA were stupid enough to put him on the air. They were asking for something like this to happen.
Most of you outside Canada probably don't know about the whole Don Cherry thing from last week, but I'll give you the gist because it's super similar:
-Don Cherry is an old hockey guy who is highly respected in the community and in Canada but says stupid shit from time to time. -He's been out of touch and mostly garbage for several years now, but he draws ratings and so he stays on TV. -Before Rememberance Day he went on a xenophobic borderline racist spiel about immigrants not wearing poppies. -He was fired two days later and it's been a massive controversy. Some people saying he should have been fired years ago, others saying it's a travesty, some blaming the network for not forcing him out years ago.
This is almost the exact same thing. Cornette never should have been there in the first place, but even beyond that, why the fuck does he think he can say something like that in [CURRENT YEAR]? Like my fucking god people. Read the room.
I FEEL LIKE I'M TAKING CRAZY PILLS

I like Cornette's commentaries but yeah he doesn't have a good grasp on things in 2019 which is crazy because politically he is on point and completely goes after Trump and his crew but he's said things like get back in the kitchen to people on twitter, to the Justin Roberts random shit and now this. Zero feel on what to say and what not to say.
I do enjoy his hyperbole but yeah you cannot say this in 2019 and I don't think he can reason with this. Should take ownership but he will probably say this is the pussification of this country.
Doesn't affect what I go to Cornette for but NWA had to do the move. I enjoy his rants because he's so over the top.

Cornette is an odd one because there's too much talent in his talking for there to be no filter. You cannot sound that smooth and that polished and not think about what you're saying. I just think he genuinely doesn't see the harm in it. I can't believe they aired it either.
Cornette has some great points re: flippy shit, people not selling everything these days, and psychology going out the window, and some terrible points especially when it comes to the women. But he is one of the more compelling wrestling personalities today, at least to me. I suspect others won't agree. But yeah, what a colossal fuck up.

NWA getting called out hard by black twitter. Their attitude seems to be if NWA cared, this would have never have aired. Rather than hate on Jim or cheer for his removal people should be asking what does it say about the company that no one noticed this before air date?

That seems to be why some of black twitter is not so upset with him. They expect it from Cornette. He said this sort of shit for ages. What they did not expect is for the rest of production to not see problems with it and air it. And those production guys get to keep their jobs.

I honestly can’t in good conscience watch this show anymore. He says it live and he apologizes and gets fired and everything is fine. But this was taped WEEKS ago. Yet they still uploaded it unedited or without a warning or an apology. I’m done. And I’m fucking pissed about it.

A boycott seems extreme. It was a terrible racist joke in awful taste but a joke is not overtly racist. I hope people give the promotion a second chance. Cornette and the editing guy, they get no second chance.

This is the most relevancy the new NWA has had. I honestly could see this being a reason they decided to leave it in. A calculated risk for some publicity (no such thing as bad publicity, right?). I still fully intend to catch up on this and get invested. Wrestling has done tasteless things for years and will continue to do so. If I dropped everything I've enjoyed because of fuck-ups or tasteless shit, I'd be left staring at a blank wall probably. I don't know... That said, what a dumb comment. There are many better and more colorful colloquial analogies to convey how tough Trevor Murdoch is. So dumb.

What I assume happened is everyone heard the joke at the taping and no one thought it was racist. Until someone heard on youtube, got offending, and got some of the internet behind them. NWA just use Cornette as a scapegoat to say it is not us it just him. He is already controversial so this won't really hurt him to badly.

How the fuck could you not imagine this could be seen as racist, unless you are also a racist?
Then again, Lagana retweeted some gross stuff the other day before this happened.

I finally find a product to immerse myself in after years away from wrestling altogether... Center an entire fan fic project around it... Start to actually like Corney again (most shocking development of all) - then this happens. Wrestling fans just can't have nice things. WWE is the biggest joke its ever been and AEW sniffs its own farts out of wine glasses; Powerrr is the perfect medium for me.
Of course it was racist, of course it has no place in the year 2019. Wrestling as a whole already struggles with a bad racial history which I'd like it to finally move past. But here we still are, dealing with blackface t-shirts and Ethiopian famine jokes. I'm not even angry really, I'm just way more disappointed.
I hope they can rectify this. Still willing to give it a second chance, but if not, then I guess there's always NXT. I've seen Matt Striker and Mike Tenay's names get thrown around online as possible replacements, both of whom I think could do a good job, especially Striker.

He went over it on the first 30 minutes of the experience this week. And sounds like I mostly guessed right.
Short version of it is multiple people heard it live and during most of the editing. No one thought anything racist about it. They only felt they need to make an apology because so many people where offending. Jim didn't mean it as racist, but an old famine joke and doesn't believe the company thought it was racist. NWA just didn't want to hurt their fan base. Jim assumes it was mainly the people who already hate him for one reason or another so he wasn't going to apologize to those people. He said if he really did offend someone he was sorry. And he didn't want to hurt NWA so he quit.

So an "I'm sorry you were offended" apology. Shocker of shockers. Sort of.
There was also an element of him pushing back against cancel culture, especially from the AEW fans who have been out for his blood. He apologised to those who were all legitimately disappointed and offended by his comment and he explained where he was coming from and how naive he was. He also explained the shock he went through when he found out, he legitimately wasn't expecting a reaction, especially since he made those comments months ago and nobody else at the NWA picked it up.
Then he read a death threat he received for criticising AEW and explained again that he wasn't going to allow himself to get pushed around by a bunch of people who do nothing but take offence to everything.
So...pretty much as expected.

This situation is nothing that I'd hold against Cornette, but more NWA for having this taped since September and not editing it out. We already no Cornette isn't going to hold back on making a comment that some might find offensive (considering he was on Styles side after the comment that got Joey released from Evolve), and if you can't get Jim to do a refund of the bit of commentary, just cut it out and move on.
It'll suck to see Him gone from NWA,as his commentary on the events was pretty good.

No show this week. I figured we'd get another recap/hype episode what with Into The Fire coming up on Saturday. Nope. Nothing at all.
I'm still undecided about ordering the NWA pay per view (and going to ROH Final Battle on Friday). Most likely I'll either skip both or go all in to make this the biggest wrestling weekend in years by watching both.
