Bryant was among at least four people traveling in his private helicopter over Calabasas when a fire broke out, sending the chopper spiraling from the sky, according to TMZ Sports.

There were no survivors, and the cause of the crash is under investigation, according to TMZ.

Saw other reports saying that isn't true. Hope that is the case. Not going to speculate anymore. Awful news either way. What sucks the most is Bryant was still so tight within the NBA Circles and was essentially commenting and offering advice for current players to this day.

horrible news. My heart breaks for his family losing not only a husband/father but also a daughter/sister at 13. Tragic.

Shocking news, absolutely awful.

I'm not much of a basketball fan, watched the odd game - mainly when in the States - but Kobe was a name that transcended the sport he played. A sporting legend.

I have a 13 year old daughter myself, I have given her an extra hug and kiss this evening.

I honestly have never experienced a death that is affecting me as much as this Kobe Bryant news. It’s been bothering me all day. It has honestly ruined my whole day. This is UNBELIEVABLE.

Kobe was just starting to embrace life after basketball. What a sad day.

His 20 year career was all with one team (which is something you rarely see in sports these days), the Los Angeles Lakers.

With his determination, undying passion to win, and fierce competitiveness, he won five NBA championships, was a multiple time Finals MVP, won one NBA MVP, multiple time All Star, became the only person in the history of sports to have two numbers retired by a team, and accomplished many more feats that anyone can dream of accomplishing.

As influential as Kobe was on the court, he also was influential off the court, using his platform to do good around the world, including helping bring attention to basketball in several countries in the world, which include the UK, France, Italy, Germany, China, Japan, Australia, and many more. Kobe was also successful in Hollywood, specifically writing and screenplay as he won an Oscar for a short film titled Dear Basketball. And most importantly, he was the ultimate family man, leaving behind a wife and three other children.

Devastating. He was one of the greatest of all time and he is gone just like that. Man, life is short and sometime we take it for granted. Was even more devastated hearing his young daughter was on there too. Such a very, very sad day. RIP Mamba.

This hurts. My favorite player and it was so heartwarming seeing him in games with his daughter. Dude did not even see himself inducted to HOF. Fucking sucks. 

It’s been a whole day since he passed and I still can’t get over it. I had a lot of errands to run today and wore my #8 Kobe jersey and I got so many comments. From adults to teens. This guys death is the most impacted I have ever been from a non family member. I was flabbergasted and upset by Eddie and Benoit and Owen and Warrior but nothing had ever truly hurt me like this.

I think it’s being a father and the fact that he died with his daughter who was going to be the basketball star to keep his legacy going is what probably hurts me the most. If he died by himself, I would’ve been upset but not as bad as I am as a parent to know he lost his child with him. In a fucking helicopter crash of all things. Devastated still. The second best of all time. The best I ever watched through his whole career.

Yeah it still has affected me all day today for some reason. I'm rarely one who takes celebrity/athlete deaths so hard but this one has certainly been different for me. I'm sure the father/daughter aspect plays a huge part of my reaction to it , especially as someone who admired his connection with his daughter over sports. Something I hope to mirror someday.

Also I watched his entire , the entire career of him being my favorite player. It wasn't nearly as much of a Lakers thing as a Kobe thing and he did things the absolute right way as far as sports are concerned.

Just sucks.
