Roughrider football is life in my province. In 2009 we were the underdog against Montreal. We dominated 99.5% of the game but allowed Montreal to within field goal range on the last drive as they used RB Avon Coburne to perfection. Everything was set-up for the come for behind win but Damon Duval MISSED the 44 yard field goal RIDERS WIN! RIDERS WIN!...
There are flags everywhere... too many men Saksatchewan 10 yard penalty retry the kick. Duval made and hearts were crushed, for about 20 seconds Sask were the Grey Cup champs of 2009. No loss has ever been more heartbreaking. Surprised my local brethren
CM Punk'd didn't vote for it as well. Maybe
RT did.
I was more a big fan of F1 racing (see my number 8) but Dale Earnahrdt was far and away my favorite closed wheel driver of all time. His loss was a real gut punch, especially at the race he had finally won after so many years of failure.
Arsenio Hall said it best about why Magic Johnson's HIV diagnosis was shocking. Not only did he have to retire but as he put it "I thought he was going to shrivel up and die in front of our eyes." I'm so grateful medicine has come along way and we didn't have to go through that especially with an athlete at his peak when he was diagnosed.
Punch-Up in Piestany is still the craziest on ice brawl in hockey. In interantional junior hockey it is very taboo to even get in a 1 on 1 fight, these were two entire teams and of course hated rivals getting it on. Officials had the lights shut-off so fans couldn't see the embarrassment and it ended up with both teams being booted from the tournament.
Ayrton Senna much akin to Dale Earnhardt was on top of his game as a racer and died early on in the 1994 San Marino GP. Many have him as the greatest race car driver in any discipline and he was known for his kamikaze qualifying laps that were more often than not at least a second faster than everyone else. Brazil went into a week of mourning in the aftermath, he was second behind Pele when it comes to Brazilian sports figures. Also Roland Ratzenberger died that weekend during practice, one of the worst weekends in Formula One history. I was at the peak of my F1 fandom when this happened and it was utterly devastating.
Clint Malarchuk's injury is the worst I've seen in any sport. He was sliced across the neck by a skate in a collision at the net and blood immediately soaked his crease. Fortunately he was at the correct end of the ice where the medical facility was located or he would have died. What's crazier is he went into deep depression afterword which lead to alcoholism and attempted suicide. The bullet ricocheted of his pallet and eye socket though and missed his brain. This guy wasn't meant to die.
