Not wanting to further hijack PW's favorite wrestler countdown, but surging with nostalgia right now for beloved things from my childhood... Figured maybe we could strike while the iron was hot and discuss Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z in more depth in a dedicated thread. What say you, Baker-man and Big Pete? Any other fans out there? Worst case, if Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z aren't enough on their own to generate enough interest and discussion, maybe we can expand this to recalling all the beloved cartoons of our youth: Transformers, G.I. Joe, Teenager Mutant Ninja Turtles, Voltron, Gobots, Captain Planet, Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars, etc.

Well, on the off-hand chance this does spiral into all cartoons of our youth, let me jot down some others I want to potentially remember and post memories of later... TaleSpin DuckTalesX-Men: The Animated Series Batman: The Animated SeriesLife with LouieMuppet Babies Bolded are legendary. Duck Tales is a well-known classic. Life With Louie is a nice deep cut. Never ran into too many people outside of my mid 90s neighborhood clique who watched that one. It was part of the GOAT Saturday morning/early afternoon lineup which also included WWF Superstars, WCW Worldwide, and The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross. Andy Anderson (Louie's dad) was the man. They also came up with the "all bullies have two first names" thing, which was big in my neighborhood. Batman is borderline legendary (to me. I realize it is legendary legendary to most people). The others I watched on occasion. Oh, I accidentally deleted Spiderman. I watched that too...like twice. X-Men I watched like 5 times when my cousin was over. Tale Spin & Muppet Babies I watched regularly, but they were more like B Shows than the A Shows they were likely sandwiched between. Never watched the ones I deleted. A few of them I never even heard of. Anyway, Exosquad is my all time favorite. It's even better than Duck Tales! I was also a huge Conan The Adventurer fan. Both of these are probably more obscure than all the ones you posted that I never heard of  Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates is also up there. Conan & Peter Pan would almost certainly make my Top 5* *Not including "adult"/prime time stuff like The Simpsons, King of the Hill, and South Park. That's a different category. And honestly some of my favorite "children's" cartoons would probably beat out KOTH and South Park (both of which I love/like btw). EDIT: Tale Spin was definitely in Peter Pan and the Pirates' tv 'block.' Proving my point about it being a B Show sandwiched in between an A Show. Also, the best thing about Muppet Babies was Darth Vader lived in their closet. Very random and bizarre and awesome.

I've never seen all of Dragon Ball, but loved Dragon Ball Z. Though I was always disappointed after the Cell Saga, he abandoned Gohan and all the progress he made and it just went back to the Goku show. Sayain Saga through Cell Saga had an amazing build, and while I enjoy the stuff after, it just started feeling too similar. Super was okay, though I'll never forgive them for future Trunks' hair randomly being blue, even though past Trunks hair was still the purple it'd always been. WTF Toriyama?

I loved how the Frieza saga deconstructed Vegeta and presented him as Theon Greyjoy. A proud prince who watched his entire kingdom wiped out and has had to do the bidding of this gender binary alien that can wipe out entire civilizations without leaving it's seat. It gave him fantastic pathos and perhaps the most heart-breaking moment in the entire series where he cuts the greatest promo on Frieza and wips himself into a frenzy, only to get his ass handed to him.
It actually makes Goku's victory much more satisfying because he didn't rely on a trick Roshi or Kai taught him, he earns it through representing his people. It's like a MacBeth prophecy taking place and Frieza does such an awesome job of selling it. It's great because he doesn't sell through out the entire saga, but as soon as Goku gets a haircut he turns into a massive chicken shit.
I like that whole saga and how it goes back to the original premise of Dragon Ball, hunting for the balls, with the twist being that instead of Pilaf and his crew, you've got these two straight up heels to compete with. Our babyfaces can't just brute force their way to victory, they have to use their wits and ability to form partnerships to get ahead.
The 4-5 Survivor Series match with the Ginyu Force was pretty good too. I like how Goku's surprise return nearly backfired and they had to come up with a clever way to reverse the process. It was also a smart way to write Goku off and give the likes of Piccolo and Vegeta a chance to shine.
I must have seen the first half of that fight four times. That was where the original run of episodes would end in Australia, so the two channels that would air it had to recycle the previous 50 some odd episodes. I kind of missed the old dub, it mixed in better with the other shows on TV, whereas the Funimation dub was it's own thing.
Controversial Opinion: Outside of the Garlic Jr saga, the Cell saga is the most creatively bankrupt of the series and the one cool element it introduces (the time travelling super saiyan from an alternative timeline) doesn't receive a big enough push and his tag team with Vegeta sucks. Yeah the slow build Gohan push finally paid off, but even the way they worked that in was forced. It was like Goku had to go film Thunders In Paradise and just decided to lay down Bash at the Beach 2000 style. It must blow your mind Bake that Double J has a clean PPV victory over Hogan.
But yeah Cell and every Android bar 16 were mediocre promos and there were too many nonsensical finishes. In hindsight the best thing the entire saga introduced was Hercule, the bravest character in the DBZ universe. Also I was happy with his WWE name change, his original Indie name was too edgy - was never going to sell any merch. Best promo, best gimmick and amazing father in law. The dude was so good he got the better of Buu not once but twice.

Going off DBZ alone and not the other spinoff series, I would have to rank sagas in my preference of
Cell & Androids Saga Freiza Saga Evil Saiyan arrival Saga Buu Saga Raditz Saga
Yu Yu Hakusho was my series in the 90s though, what a great show. The Dark Tournament is by far the BEST tournament style saga in an anime, so many fun matches. Chapter Black was better than what was given credit for, it just took a very long dive into the saga to enjoy it as it had some filler admittedly. The series starts slow but I would say once you get to Genkai's tournament, the show begins to pick up. Maybe even when Yusuke fights Hiei, Kurama and Goken(Or whatever the 3rd grunt's name was).

The dude was so good he got the better of Buu not once but twice. Future Trunks was a cool addition in the Cell Saga as well. Cell isn't really meant to have a personality, he's genetically modified to be perfection and to not have a flaw. Of course he becomes arrogant but his evolution into Perfect Cell ends up turning him to completely disregard any other fighter to be worthy in his presence. This was the only series Tien also wasn't a complete jobber as he single handedly held the 2nd version of Cell to a standstill to buy Goku and the others time before giving in to fatigue. I liked Cell as just being devoid of any empathy, Freiza enjoys killing and taking over land like a tyrant, Cell does what he does to show supreme domination, Buu kills because he's a heartless monster who thinks everything is a game.

Future Trunks is basically Tazz. He makes the greatest debut of all-time and comes off like a badass but then he basically becomes a regular mid-carder and forms an underwhelming tag team with Vegeta. There's one scene where Vegeta isn't a complete asshole to him but it was such a letdown after his debut.
That's the DBZ equivalent of 'he's supposed to be a heel!' He was the least compelling villain of the lot and somehow got less and less interesting as he powered up. At least his first form was horrifying, going around and just straight up sucking people's organs and leaving their skins behind. That was an AMAZING finisher and they blew it off so he could be a boring snob chameleon character with no real motivation or backstory. That's because he was never meant to be the main heel, but Gero didn't draw any buyrates and was promptly fired.
Yu Yu Hakusho was great and I love how it opens with a DBZ like swerve with an asshole protaganist. I bought a couple of Shonen Jumps and Graphic Novels of it, but never really sat down and watched the anime - it was always on at random times usually at 1am in the morning.
It had this really awesome fight between the gang and some cat looking dude that had so many near-falls. I really want to go back to it, but I just don't have the discipline to watch 112 episodes of anime anymore.
I also want to catch up on One Piece, but I dropped the manga over a decade ago. I can't imagine how much has happened since.

Wait, did Big Pete just compare Vegeta to Spike fucking Dudley? Big Pete, you're dead to me man, that shit is so uncool. I've been a fan since the OG series before I even knew what anime was, just thought it was an awesome cartoon. I recently finished up Dragon Ball Super (the latest DB series), it had some cool moments here and there but just didn't compare to Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z (the less said about GT the better).

Hmmm? Oh because Future Trunks is Tazz and they formed a random tag team in 2002? I mean I was going to go with Chris Jericho, but I don't know how many would get that his initial run in the company was disappointing.
I made the comparison in Match Review, but Vegeta is clearly Macho Man Randy Savage. Small man syndrome and a massive complex with the central character of the show, but also a fan favourite.

Tenshinhan is the guy. Strongest human in the series. Krillen is a chump. Fact time.
Ya know how Goku "quit" in his match vs Cell so Gohan could fight? That was a remake of how Tien was so good he made Jackie Chun quit in the same way. Except unlike Cell, he beat Goku to win the tournament. Don't even bring up the car.
Blindy already brought up his Cell takedown. He did a similar thing to Buu. In case you didn't know.
Remember Nappa? Remember how Tien was su,h a badass he fought without a hand until his body gave out. He didn't die like a bitch like Krillen does.
One of the movies (Bojack) they have a tournament and Tien faces Trunks. Pushed him so hard he forced him to go Super Saiyan. Ya think he'd need that for Yamcha?
Oh yeah he fucked Lunch, which is a borderline 3some.
Despite it being the Saiyan show and no humans worth a shit since Piccolo Sr. Tien showed you don't fuck with a real man!

Krillin ended up with Android 18, he was the biggest winner in all of DBZ.
Definitely an upgrade over Maron. Easily Top 5 heels in all of DBZ.
Did Bulma ever suspect Krillin of having a type?

I'm just here to recommend DBZ Abridged to everyone, especially the ones that have obviously never seen it before, Baker and 🤯 . An edited, slimmed down redubbed parody version of the whole series up to the Cell Saga, it starts out as a very simple comedy take on it all with amateur voicework, but quickly evolves into a great love letter that even does much better versions of many of the series' arcs, like Gohan's growth. If you feel the beginning feels too amateur for you folks, you can just watch the first KAI episode, which literally slims down the whole saiyan saga down to 1 episode, and skip straight to the frieza saga.

Man, I thought I remembered way more about Dragon Ball (and Z) than I apparently do. Now yinz be name-dropping characters and things that I don't recall at all. Better do a memory scrub and brain dump to get myself up to speed again. GokuRecognizable. When I did my image search, it seems like there are a few other iterations: a blonde version, and a child version. Was the child version of Goku just how he looked in Dragon Ball? And then he matured into adult form by Dragon Ball Z? If so, I'm wondering if my mind made a habit of mixing up child Goku and Gohan? Meanwhile, it seems blonde Goku is his Super Saiyan version? I feel like I don't recall that transformation from my memories of the show. Wonder if those episodes ever aired, or if I just stopped watching before they did, or if I just simply don't remember the showrunners busting out the bleach. GohanMan, doing image searched, I'm really not sure I specifically remember Gohan. Or Raditz? They're both Goku's kids? But they all look alike, including a young version of Goku? All my mixed memories have them all compiled as a single character, I think. RaditzNever mind... zero recollection of who I thought "child" Raditz was. I remember this guy, but pretty sure I thought this guy was either Frieze or Vegeta. Now I'm getting all sorts of super confused trying to recall memories. VegetaOK, I'm feeling a little bit better about confusing Raditz, Gohan, Gokuk, and Vegeta now. So these guys are all related somehow, right? Animations are awfully similar. Maybe the animators needed to be a little less subtle for young viewers. FriezaFrieza is this Mewtwo-lookin' motherfucker!? I remember this character, but had no recollection of this being Frieza. PiccoloPic was my fav. Always seemed to bad ass and stoic, from what I recall. He started as a heel and then turned face, right? Epic redemption story? If not, chalk it up to more mixed up/messed up memories. Master RoshiExactly as I remembered him! Perhaps my second or third favorite after Piccolo. I don't know how heavily he was featured, but I feel like I remember always enjoying him whenever he'd pop up. NappaNo real recollection of this Stone Cold Super Saiyan. He was more powerful and bad ass than Vegeta? I feel like for how much I remember Vegeta, I would've thought Vegeta was more powerful... or at least the more devious heel? Or maybe I just remember Vegeta because he looks like Raditz looks like Gohan looks like Goku. Repetition is the key to remembering something after all, right? PilafPretty sure I confused him for the child version of Piccolo. Didn't recall him being blue instead of green. TienNow this is the baldie I remember! Or at least I think it is. I feel like I remember him having six dots on his forehead though instead of a third eye. So maybe this isn't who I'm thinking it is? If it is though, I feel like he might've been my second favorite behind Piccolo. KrillinLOL, well... my memory works at mixing shit up. Now I can't tell if I distinctly remember either Krillin or Tien, or merged the best parts of them together in my head. Krillin looks like a character who'd have a Napoleon complex. Also, what's the deal with his dots? Scars? Tribal branding? Just unfortunately symmetrical moles? TrunksZero recollection. Seems like he could've been to the Dragon Ball Z gang what the green/white ranger was to the original Power Rangers? YajirobeVaguely recall. Definitely feel like he must be related to Goku, Gohan, Raditz, Vegeta, etc. Looks like he might've been a hilarious character, but don't recall any specifics about him. ChiaotzuJust Tien's floater pal? I remember him by appearance but really nothing else. Seems like yet another comic relief character? YamchaBased on appearance, seems to be another Goku/Gohan/Raditz/Vegeta/Yajirobe relative. Maybe more bad ass given the scars and ponytail? Like the Raphael of the group? I'd be lying if I said I had distinct memories of this guy. BabidiZero recollection, and this feels like a character I would've remembered. Did "her"(?) episodes just never air in the US? Majin BuuAnother mewtwo-lookin' motherfucker! Although, this one looks just as inspired by some Cantina alien too. I feel like he looks more familiar for those reasons than his own merits. I don't particularly recall his involvement. Looks like a cranky, mopey motherfucker though. HerculeFuck, after all the hype, I was hoping I'd recognize and remember loving Herc... buuuttt NOPE. Looks a bit like a "jumping the shark" character just based on image search. Garlic Jr.All-time great ring name. Is this the pokemon evolution of Pilaf? If so, I feel like I understand more now why I maybe confused Pilaf/Garlic Jr. with Piccolo. Looks like a bad ass alien elf. But, with the confusion and mixed memories, don't have any specific recollections of this dope beast. Or, wait, I'm finding other pictures of Garlic Jr. looking more like a wimpy nerd. Did I pick a pic of the wrong guy!? CellYet another case of homie lookin' super familiar and yet me not recollecting any specific scenes or moments. I'll end this here and ask this re: sagas -- are sagas separate seasons of Dragon Ball Z, or separate episodes or sets of episodes within a season? Or all just overlapping storylines all running concurrently throughout the entirety of Dragon Ball Z? If quarantine holds up, feeling like revisiting some of these old cartoons might be a worthwhile trip down Memory Lane to where it intersects with Nostalgia Ave.

I believe King Picolo was evil and was the final bad guy in original Dragonball but a reincarnation offspring ended up being the Piccolo you saw today which is kinda where the Raditz story had prevalence of Goku having to fight his brother while having to watch over his shoulder the once scary King Picvolo who is helping to save Earth now.
And Yajirobe saved the world by cutting Vegeta's tail which ended up turning MegaApe Vegeta back into a weaker form. Without that, Goku loses. Don't ever mess with Yajirobe he carries that sword for a reason. Vegeta does not fuck with this man ever again, he took his tail and manhood with 1 swing of the blade. Humbled Vegeta who ended up saving lives between he and his offspring Trunks.

Let me try and answer some of these questions.
Raditz is Goku's brother who shows up at the start of Z and drops all these massive revelations. Gohan is Goku's first born son and Vegeta has no link to the family. All the Saiyans are named after veggies as well and the show has some great naming conventions.
Piccolo's angle in the Saiyan Saga is one of the most gripping. He was the biggest heel in all of Dragon Ball and was basically the re-incarnation of the Devil. He starts Z as a defacto babyface but over time softens and makes the ultimate sacrifice to save Gohan. This sets the next saga in place because they have to revive Piccolo to save the Dragon Balls.
Nappa was Vegeta's Jannetty who got squashed by Goku easily, before Vegeta turned on him for disgracing him.
The child version of Piccolo? Dende? Pilaf was the first major opponent from Dragon Ball and was basically just a goof alongside Mai (one of the hottest divas on the show) and Shu, some anthromorphic ninja dog.
Krillin was just a monk that was wise to the world and was like Goku's surrogate older brother. He's one of the best characters on the show and it's his short term injury (aka death...the second time!) that triggers Goku to bleach his hair.
Yamcha was apart of the original Dragon Ball crew and started off as a bandit with his own version of Chiaotzu named Puar, a non-binary cat that's extremely protective of Yamcha. He's the Wimp Lo of Dragon Ball, they trained him wrong on purpose as a joke and he gets his ass handed to him. He was also going out with Bulma for a time, but dropped the ball. He's like the Test of the Dragon Ball universe.
Yajirobe is literally just their fat drug dealer that delivers them magical beans that increases their recovery rates ridiculously. After Goku's fight with Vegeta, he's got a crushed vertabrae, atrophied arms, atrophied legs, no teeth, severely broken nose, compound fractured skull and he takes one senzu bean and is instantly recovered. His gimmick is that he's an extremely talented samurai who is just too lazy to do anything. He was the break out-star of the Piccolo arc in Dragon Ball and was the unlikely hero in the Saiyan Saga.
There's about 5 versions of Buu, the fat version is his most iconic look. The kid version was his original form and his worst incarnation, he doesn't even speak English.
Hercule starts off as the biggest heel in the series, taking all the credit for saving the earth and even getting major cities named after him but he redeems himself and saves the earth not once but twice. He's a good egg.
So you're actually not far off from Garlic Jr. So in DBZ they based a lot of their movies around storylines from the TV shows, just with different villains assuming the role. Garlic Jr was a Pilaf clone, but an alternative Pilaf who actually gets his wish granted and becomes an all powerful genie, but then Goku read spoilers for Aladdin and sucked him away in an alternative dimension. His original form is very Pilaf esque, but his henchmen are a bunch of buff demons instead of a hot brunette and an antromorphic ninja dog.
Sagas are like Eras in the WWF, you have.
Saiyan Saga Frieza Saga Garlic Jr. Saga (Filler Non-Cannon) Cell Saga World Games Saga (Filler Non-Cannon) Majin Buu Saga
Then in sagas like Cell you have the Trunks Saga, Android Saga and Cell Games Saga just to highlight speficic points of the show (or sell trading cards).

Then there were movies like Tree of Might, Broly's movie etc. that are one offs for the most part.
And mini sagas like Goku vs Pikkon Tourney in between Cell and Buu.

I think its the Other Worlds Saga or something?

Yeah Other Worlds Saga, think it's when Goku is still dead and travels into a tourney of the dead and ends up seeing all the adversaries he once faced along the way.

So I've spent the better part of the past hour on Wikipedia trying to gain better bearings...
Are y'all talking about the TV series, the movies, the comic books, or EVERYTHING all combined?

Manga and Anime have a lot of similarities but mostly TV show with the one off movies(Garlic Jr and the Spice Boys, Broly, Tree of Might etc.).
