Rip tides always scared the shit outta me at the beach.

Here's hoping before going to an area with rip tides, Shad was at least aware of the best practices and basic survival tips. Though, had he washed up downshore, surely you'd think he'd have made contact by now.

My wife was a lifeguard and whenever we go to the coast this is her #1 fear. It’s fucked how quickly you get dragged under, and there’s nothing you can do.

Riptide, recall them telling us not to fight it as we'd be too exhausted to swim once over.

Like, growing up, I feel like we were always taught what @ness said... as best you can, don't fight it; if anything, swim parallel to the shoreline to get out. But is that shit just sugar coating the harsh reality? Like, do riptides last forever? Or at least longer than a human can presumably hold his or her breath?

What Ness said is true but it’s really the only thing you can do. You try and stay afloat and hope it doesn’t pull you under as you watch the shore get further and further away.

If it doesn’t pull you under and you don’t panic, you can try and swim back to shore by going around it.

"Leave me and save my son." That's something right out of a movie. If he's gone, he went out the ultimate hero. Hopefully he's found but, realistically....the odds.....damn.

Feels like a damn movie premise. He's gonna wake up on a desert island and find his way home.

Or he's fish food.

It's literally the reason I won't swim in the ocean. Growing up in New England you learn how to swim in the ocean. All I remember about riptides is swim parallel to the shore until you see breaking waves, then go in. Nightmare and highly panic inducing. This is horrible.

I somehow weaselled my way into becoming Facebook friends with Mike Bucci, he and Shad would go back and forth on absolute anything.. for days. Great source of entertainment.

Bucci is lost for words, as you’d imagine.

I got caught in a riptide in the long island sound once and it was terrifying. Was a fairly weak one but strong enough to pull me under the water and 30 or so feet out extremely fast. Was the last time I went into the ocean.

It's sad to see Shad pass on this way, and is a reminder of how powerful the ocean can be.

Not finding a body and having no official proof of death has to be brutal for the family since they will always have hope despite knowing deep down.

Dude went out knowing his kid would be okay. That's being a parent. I'd put myself in front of a bullet for my kid and go out knowing that as long as she was ok, it was worth it. Hero.

I'm down for such a change... although admittedly a "Shad Gaspard" award doesn't sound quite as catch as an "Ultimate Warrior" award. But considering the guys who inspired each award title, fuck going with Warrior over Shadimus Prime.
