The game was designed by living legend Shigeru Miyamoto, who deserves a picture.
If one hyper-addictive, endlessly replayable game with an infuriatingly catchy theme tune wasn't enough, another one was about to be unceremoniously dropped onto the world...
Emp wasn't kidding about Shigeru Miyamoto's living legend status. Look him up if you're a video game know nothing like me....or even if you're not. Really hoping the next game is what I think it is. I may have been more of a Mario respecter than lover, but I am definitely a lover of this next game....if it is what I think it is. If so, this game is also a Mr. Miyamoto special. A living legend indeed....

The next game better be a Baker favourite, but not the one he was referencing. It would be a total drag if it didn't appear.

To Big Pete's point: I know the greatest video game rivalry of all-time, from one of my favorite documentaries ever made... But wtf is Manic Miner??? Mario is the definition of significance whether anyone agrees to that or not. The NES version is the first game I ever remember playing, altough we quickly became a Sega house due to me and my father's love of sports games. For casuals or even non-players, "Mario" is more often than not the first name that comes to mind when one thinks of video games. Sonic is still king for me though... They did my boy dirrtttttyyyy.

Sonic was too nice at let everybody he every meet get some screen time and even let some up stage him.

Manic Miner - a true inspiration. Donkey Kong Country paid homage, now you all have to listen to my the source's wisdom.

There was nothing cozier than wriggling up to a lamp with your big bulky gameboy loaded up with batteries and playing some tetris. Such a simple concept, but that process of trying to put four lines away was such a fun brain stimulator and it had so many clones. Panel de pon (or Tetris Attack/Pokemon Puzzle League/Meteos) is my poison, but I can go a few rounds of Tetris.
I'm surprised Dragon Quest didn't appear. I keep forgetting the British influence on this, if it had have been a Japan list, I'd imagine it'd be the first game on the list.
I had Metroid as my other pick, although it really should have been Zelda. I wantedto go for an old school action-adventure and in today's market Metroidvanias are everywhere. I'm not sure if the same could be said in 2012 when the list was published and I didn't vote for any 2D Zeldas.

I remember getting around the no games at school when we learned how to get Tetris on the TI 8X calculator.

Those calculators brings back nostalgia. 80085 So ingrained I don't even need to turn my calculator upside down anymore to see 'em. Tetris is an all-time top ten personal favorite video game ever. I think there was a study showing that playing it after a traumatic event can help stave off PTSD? I know for me it has always been equal parts addictive and anxiety-relieving (so, in other words, gummies before I discovered gummies?) — so Tetris will always have a near and dear spot in the OCD corner of my heart.

I like the backstories Emperor provides. I was once an avid video game player, but I neither knew nor cared about who was the brains behind these games. So it was cool to learn about the likes of Miyamoto and Toriyama, and now I learn the creator of Tetris was a Soviet. Anyway, I'll just C&P my thoughts on Tetris from today's News thread.... Tetris was alright. I never got hooked on it like everybody else apparently did though. Maybe because I never actually owned the game myself? Only played it at friend's houses. It was a fun time killer, but not a huge favorite or anything. Also, I never owned a GameBoy :$

Tetris was alright. I never got hooked on it like everybody else apparently did though. Maybe because I never actually owned the game myself? Only played it at friend's houses. It was a fun time killer, but not a huge favorite or anything. Also, I never owned a GameBoy I'm happy at least one person is reading the backstories. My work is not going unnoticed! The Game Boy was my first console, so of course I owned Tetris, but I don't recall playing it as a kid. My focus was on Super Mario Land, Wave Race, and eventually Pokemon Red. Alleyway was the hyper-addictive Game Boy game that acted as my personal Tetris. It's essentially a port of Atari's Breakout with a Mario cameo. My Tetris addiction came years later when I found this multiplayer version online and spent a few weeks or months playing it on a daily basis. Couldn't tell you the name, there are so many of these Tetris clones that it's impossible to keep track. Wait, what... There's a medical version of Mario!? An attempt to dogpile on Tetris' success with a Nintendo original descending block puzzler, but didn't have much impact. Fun game though. The colourful cover art promises an experience the dull monochrome Game Boy cannot deliver. Also love this meme of 🤯 being astonished at every single incarnation of Mario. We should start making up Mario games to confuse him. Anyone ever played Barber Mario?

It's still mind-blowing to me that Tetris didn't come out until AFTER Super Mario Bros. Tetris feels like something that should've come out around the time of games like Pong, Space Invaders, Asteroid, etc. At latest around the time of the OG DK.
Mind... blown.

I think it was actually released 1984 which should put it before SMB. Not sure why the list uses 1986 date.

Tetris didn't leave the USSR until 1987. I think 1986 is given because it was released in the USSR on an actual gaming computer in 1986, as opposed to the Elektronika 60. The Elektronika 60 version, the one with the ASCII art, was more of a prototype and probably was never intended to be the finished product.
But yes, that prototype was developed in 1984, so you could argue it predates Super Mario Bros.
