Super Mario 64Nintendo, 1996About six months after the Playstation was released came Nintendo's fifth-generation console, the Nintendo 64. It was the last console to use cartridges until the Nintendo Switch was released in 2017. Nintendo 64 remained the second best-selling console of this era despite its main rivals, the Playstation and Sega, upgrading to CD-ROM consoles. A huge part of its success was thanks to its launch title, Super Mario 64.
Super Mario 64 is the first 3D platformer in the Mario series. Much like Super Mario Bros. set the standard for 2D platforming over a decade prior, Super Mario 64 created the template adopted by dozens of 3D platformers to follow. As always, great care was taken in every aspect of the design, from Mario's movement animations to the individual levels to the facial expressions of all characters and enemies. It adapted the skill-based running and jumping challenges of the 2D Mario platformers to the next dimension, while adding new elements such as puzzle solving and an emphasis on exploration.
Mario's abilities and powerups are far more diverse than those of previous Mario games. Mario can walk, run, crawl, puch, kick, swim, climb, and carry items. He has many different ways to jump, including a long jump, triple jump, wall jump, and backflip. Special caps are available to make Mario fly, walk underwater, withstand heavy wind, and walk through certain obstacles.
Why is the game significant? Super Mario 64 was financially and critically an enormous success. It is the best-selling Nintendo 64 game, and it won numerous accolades and awards. It established an entirely new genre, the 3D platformer, and convincingly demonstrated how the platformer genre could become so much more with the addition of an extra dimension.
The design and gameplay elements were a key driver of its legacy. The 2D Mario games, good as they were, had a limitation of being solely run-and-jump games. Super Mario 64 introduced puzzle-solving, exploration, different worlds, and collectibles to the platforming genre. All of these became staples of the genre: you'd be hard-pressed to find a prominent 3D platformer that doesn't incoroporate some or all of these features.
Technologically, Super Mario 64 is a marvel. The graphics are stunning, the controls are intuitive and silky smooth, the controller was used to great effect to maximise the movement options of the player. Additionally, it was the first game to have a camera that could be controlled independently of the character and rotated with a full 360 degrees of motion thanks to the novel analog stick.
I know where you live.

Holy shit, blast from the past. I remember the commercials for PaRappa The Rapper with the old lady. While I totally forgot about this, makes total sense appearing here given its inspiration for Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Dance Dance Revolution, Red Dead Redemption 2, etc.

Don't think I ever got much further than the second level. I recall this game being a big addition to those demo CDs back then. Always on it.

I like rhythm games as a side quest like beating MJ in a dance contest or winning approval at the Honeybee but not as main focus as a game. But I still think this is pretty epic.

Guitar Hero 3 is responsible for DragonForce becoming as big as they did. It's hard to say if they would have reached those heights without their song being the final boss of GH3.
Therefore PaRappa's legacy can extend to heavy metal, albeit very indirectly.

Wasn't that Guitar Hero II? At least I remember going to see Dragon Force in early '07 and there is no way I would have heard of them if it wasn't for Guitar Hero.
Same deal with Buckethead.

I was surprised that PaRappa was genuinely the first rhythm game. At first I thought the list was going full blown Sony salesman trying to talk up the PlayStation, like what was next? Jumping Flash? Gran Turismo? I thought for sure there was some other Japanese arcade game that predated but based on what I looked up, this was by far the most well known.
It's one of those games I find that's been forgotten over time. Back in the day, PaRappa had serious mascot potential and it was easy to associate him and Crash with the PS1. Then the second game came and went on the PS2 and just nothing. It'sa shame, because it's a wholesome little title that actually holds up just as well as you remember. So many of those games from that generation are so archaic to play now, but PaRappa is pretty much exactly as you remember it with some neat little toe-tappers. I put it in the same category as a Pokemon Snap where you could never really sink your teeth into it, but if you come back every few years it's a fun little afternoon's worth of playtime.
I don't think even think this managed to make the PS1 classic yeah? Sony were too busy trying to charge $20 as a stand alone title on it's eshop, which was such a jip.

It's definitely Guitar Hero 3. It's funny that a video game made DragonForce famous because the band are famously in love with video games and incorporate it into their music. Last time I saw them then went the whole distance. Arcade machines playing footage of classic arcade games were on the stage, that could be climbed on. The vocalist got out a guitar and played a medley of video game covers. Amazing night that wouldn't have happened if it weren't for PaRappa The Rapper. All hail.

That's definitely a Bernstein Bears moment. I remember going to see them because Through The Fire and the Flames was a massive meme song coming off of Guitar Hero. My best guess is that we got caught up in the speculation of what the next impossible track would be and DragonForce was a popular suggestion that eventually became a reality.

That's definitely a Bernstein Bears moment. The Bernstein Bears or should I say Berenstain Bears is a popular phenomenon where people were convinced it was spelled differently and instead of admitting they were wrong argued it hadn't always been spelled that way. Similar to the Mandela Effect and the like.

Parappa wouldn't have crossed my mind in a million years but it makes so much fucking sense it should be more obvious than Mario.
From Guitar Hero to DDR to whatever other countless beat/karaoke games have come out since, it's influence is massive.

The one PC game to rule them all.
Perhaps the one video game, period, to rule them all.
Never really knew or appreciated its significance, but know I loved and played the fuck out of it.

Things are heating up. Nobody named Night Trap and Parappa The Rapper. Five of you identified Super Mario 64 - all except sandylea and X-zero . Congratulations to Lionheart for being the only poster to name Tomb Raider, and to System and X-zero for correctly identifying StarCraft. System and Lionheart extend their lead, remaining neck and neck as we head into the final 10 games.
THE TABLE will be updated more frequently from now on.

I didn't have Starcraft?!?!? Did I overthink myself and give Starcraft's significance credit to Warcraft!?
Which game was responsible for the birth of BattleNet? Diablo?

I can confirm that 🤯 named WarCraft and not StarCraft. Fuuuck me. I deserve to be in last place. Just went back and checked my list. How the fuck did I list both Warcraft and Diablo yet exclude the greatest of Blizzard's holy trinity in Starcraft. I'm so upset right now the joys of fatherhood have been negated.

I would have put Starcraft for sure 100% if it wasn’t just a rough draft list. Damn it. The effects have finally started to hit home. It can only get worse from here.

Not surprised at all no one called Night Trap. Mortal Kombat got robbed. Parappa I thought someone might have called it. But while it was the first and cult classic. Think DDR or Guitar Hero deserved a spot more. Super Mario 64 was definitely a game changer. And no good list would be complete without it.
I am kind of surprised Tomb Raider only got one vote. I am guessing people were betting on Metroid for that slot like me. StarCraft I never played but had one roommate who would tell me all about that game and its accomplishments.

Hang on, Final Fantasy VII didn't make the list and the good doctor still recommended it?
It sounds like something Mark Hunt would do.
I've barely played any Blizzard games which is a weird blindspot considering how much their style appeals to me. I was just never a huge PC gamer growing up so games like Diablo II, Warcraft III and Starcraft that are held up as these monoliths are absent. I'd love to sit down and play them at some point, but then I could just see the amount of hours slipping away. Seriously, Civilization V was the scariest experience I've ever gone through. 1 session that felt like 2 hours ended up being 10 and I had to get ready for the next day.
