August always feels like the calm before the storm, where a lot of popular sports titles receive their annual release while the odd title that means anything to the typical gamer gets released. Usually we're starved of quality releases but I think with the release of The Last of Us 2 and Ghosts of Tsushima in recent months that anticipation isn't quite there. Still, we're seeing some fun titles pop up, namely Fall Guys which appears to be the flavour of the month. I'll have to look into it, but I've seen a few of you guys touch on it in other threads, after a few days how are you guys finding it?
The return of Battletoads would have been huge news to me. The bootleg Ninja Turtles was one of the first games I ever played on the Super Nintendo and to this day has one of my favourite soundtracks. Looking at the art-style and honestly the designs just look too crude for me. I miss that richer 90s rock-inspired look they had going. Looking at Battlemaniacs, some of the concepts just seemed straight out of an Iron Maiden concept which is what appealed to me when I was younger. Did anyone ever manage to clear that game? I could never get past the Turbo Tunnels, way too much trial and error and it just wasn't enjoyable with 2 players. Typically it was the warm up game before we started playing Super Mario Kart, Killer Instinct, Kirby's Fun Pack or for some odd reason, Batman Forever. If we ever did a list of worst games, that maybe up there. It was Mortal Kombat Anthology before that became a thing, if it wasn't 2 players, we would never have touched it.
I've actually been playing the original Crystal Chronicles recently. I'm not sure if I got around to talking about it in the What Games Are You Playing now thread, but that was one of those games I bought back in the day that I never got around to finishing. In fact, I don't think I ever played more than a couple of hours of it. I was only a few hours into my recent playthrough and from about the 4th world on I couldn't recognise anything. Crystal Chronicles is one of those annoying games that has a ton of really cool features but it's either locked behind the annoying GBA-GC feature that Nintendo were pushing extremely hard at the time or it just lacks polish in certain areas. What I like about it is the fairytale like aesthetic, the charming score - it's like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter evening covered up in blankets level of comfort and a few FF callbacks. I'll touch more on the game in the other thread, but the remaster has my interest just to see what changes they decided to make. I'm always curious to see developers go back and George Lucas their games, just to see what they acknowledge as simple flaws that could have easily been remedied out. Ocarina of Time is a good example where they made it easier to play songs on the Ocarina and changed the boots into simple short cut items instead of having to constantly pause and unpause the game for one particular dungeon.

What is Crystal Chronicles? FF spin off? Fall Guys is a really charming and inventive casual game. For me it's not that fun playing on my own, but good with friends. Still got some teething issues, glitches a fair bit, controls are kinda janky, and doesn't play well with certain types of controllers. Lionheart will have a higher opinion.

It's a Final Fantasy spin-off that originally came out for the GameCube. It was Action RPG dungeon crawler where you play as a humble villager on a quest to collect Miasma and save the world from this mysterious fog. To traverse, you, your mog or in co-op your friends have to carry around this monument that holds off the fog.
It was one of those games that had plenty of charm, but the real fun seemed to be in co-op which required you to have a GBA and an adaptor to play with additional players. It would have been good in theory, but nobody had that stuff lying around and nobody was catching up for a FF:CC gathering.
It definitely lacks the polish of the mainline entries but there's enough charm there for a FF fan to get a kick out of it.

Won 2 crowns in Fall Guys, so many final 3 or 4 placements, I came so close!@@@ Super easy to pick up game, just to be the final guy standing takes some luck(Esp in team comp. with randoms) and some legit skill. The Team comp get frustrating and I prefer some of them(Hoop game or the roller ball one) vs others(Hate soccer one). Much prefer the solo ones personally speaking.
Feels like some of the games aren't necessarily the most qualified move on, like the hidden path game, you get pushed off by others to see if the path is true or not and it can cost you.
This and Battletoads(Free for Game Pass) are my plays this month. A lot of backlog catching up to do.

I must be awful at the game because if I had even an average level of skill, the luck factor would have me qualifying to the final round more than the one time I have qualified. Even then the one final round I got was the shitty race to the crown. I wanted to play the Hexagon tile falling game, I feel like I'd have a good chance of winning that.
I have failed to qualify a single time from the Whirlygig race rom like 20 attempts. Don't know why, but the final jump messes with my mind and I can never get it right.
Any game involving moving a giant ball sucks. No idea how you are supposed to get the ball moving any distance, meanwhile I see other places diving into the ball and firing it around the map like it's fucking Rocket League. Also fuck the jumping hoop game. Only done it once but I failed to jump through a single hoop, I was probably the sole reason my team lost so hard.
Doesn't help that I am forced to play with a keyboard with mouse-controlled camera, I can platform much better on a controller.

My goodness, yeah I can only play with this a controller. Would be a utter nightmare with keyboard and mouse for me.
With the soccer one, I learned to not dive at every single attempt. Trying to treat it like I am Super Mario and consistently just jumping and trying to head it to the other side.

The team games frustrate me.
First problem: sometimes team games happen when there's not an even number of players, so you get teams with different numbers of players, which is bullshit.
Second problem: some team games make it far too easy to troll. I just played a 5 vs 5 soccer game where two players of my own team just scored own goals. What a load of tosh. I don't mind luck playing a factor in races, but sabotage by idiots is driving me away.
The tail grabbing game is an example of a good teams game. Pretty much impossible for one idiot to ruin it for everyone else. Four teams. Free for all. Basically, just do away with two-teams games. And the rolling the ball down the hill game because that one is dumb as well.
