Little side hype for me: the Canadian men's team qualified for the final World Cup qualifier tonight. First time since 1997 they've made it this far. They're not in yet and have their work cut out for them, but it's a big deal. They're improving a lot and Alphonso Davies is a godsend. I'm not getting my hopes up but if they qualify I'll fucking lose my mind. Ordering a Davies Canada jersey for my birthday. Nice one! Australia are through to the final stage of Asian qualifying. We went a perfect 8 from 8 which is really positive considering we generally struggle against some of the middle east countries (beat Jordan away for the first time ever last night), and we had to play our "home" games in Kuwait in 40 degree heat.

Yeah Canada's home games have been in Chicago so far. They're hopeful that their home games from now on will be in Toronto or Vancouver. I hope Vancouver because I could totally go to those games. A lot of analysts have Canada finishing 3rd, which gets them in, so hopefully that sticks. USA and Mexico are basically a guaranteed 1-2 finish, then if Canada can avoid the 4th place playoff then that would obviously be ideal. Not sure what the other competition is like but I've heard Jamaica could be a problem this year. Guess we'll see.

Away from the euros.
Former Liverpool, Newcastle & Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez is on the verge of becoming Everton manager.

The Italians looked excellent though I am more cautious in my expectation that the general consensus. Something about playing a high block with intensity with Chiellini and Bonucci fills me with dread. They looked really good again in the second game. Lot of team chemistry, solid defensively as Italy typically are, but dynamic and mobile going forward as well. With a little bit better finishing they could have easily buried the Swiss 5 or 6-nil.

Peter Forsberg in midfield and Lundqvist in net for Sweden. Tough loss for Slovakia. They seemed content to have a scoreless draw when they are capable of creating offense. A win would have been an automatic berth to the top 16. The third game against Spain, in Spain, would have been meaningless. What a shame.

Germany pretty impressive today, did not see that performance coming after the French game. Hungary’s draw with France leaves that group wide open.
England disappointed last night but the Scots done well and should have won, hopefully they can get a result against a poor Croatia team on Tuesday.

Lewandowski came to play and Szczesny as well but the other guys, not so much. Poland blew it with the red card vs Slovakia who they should have at least drew if not beaten. Sucks.

Poland are probably the best team to depart the competition at this stage, unless Germany somehow stuff it up. All other good to great teams are through because of the 24 to 16 structure, which I’m not a huge fan of. It’s removed a lot of jeopardy in my opinion.

Germany just got really lucky to get that draw.
But now did England get really unlucky?

Have to gush for a moment.
Today I got off work early and popped into a sports bar for a couple pints and caught the 2nd half of the games. Two huge TVs, one showing each game.
We're still at limited capacity here in Canada but there was a good 20-30 people inside. We all chatted about the games so far, who we are pulling for, and when Patricio made that double save the place erupted.
I've missed this feeling so much and with this tournament and the Stanley Cup playoffs and NBA playoffs...it's amazing. I'm so happy we're on the other side of this.

I think that's why I overreacted with the alleyoop game winner last night. I forgot what it was like to hear a crowd pop like that. That was Stone Cold Steve Austin levels of poppage.

Group of death gets overused, but this one really deserved it. I feel bad for Hungary, they put up a great fight in a terrible spot, and looked far better than a lot of teams that have gone through to the knockout stage.

News from the Champions League. UEFA announced that they're doing away with the Away Goals Rule for the knockout stage.
From now on, if a home-and-home is tied, regardless of away goals, it will go straight to extra time, and penalties if needed.

That clearance on the 2nd goal for Denmark was one of the worst I had ever seen. N Williams of Wales just kicked it straight to the striker for an easy goal
It came off a should have been foul though, that was a bad judgment call by the ref but that clearance.

Wales got bent this game by the official, awful game. Denmark were far better and they have been a feel good story this tourney but still.

Sucks for Austria. Got excited for a major upset only for the goal to be overturned. They had no real shot after that even though it ended 2-1.

So Denmark gets Czech Republic now right? That’s much easier then dealing with Netherland and makes my stand that Denmark makes it to the Semi Finals that much more likely.

Two unbelievably good games today. What a tournament this has been so far! It always was, but it's really really wide open now.
Would have got some good money on Xhaka being the hero and Mbappe being the villain!

As wide open as it is, I feel like the winner of Belgium vs Italy takes the whole thing. That game is for the Cup the way those two teams have been playing.
England need to win tomorrow. They have such an easy path this year. A loss is unacceptable on home turf against a struggling German team.
