The footage Tony explained. Perry was getting a great reaction in Japan and he wanted to bring him back but assumed the fans forgot about him since he been gone almost a year. So he killed two birds with one stone, released the footage that people wanted to see and explained where Perry was. Or well that was what was attempted, he neglected to mention that Perry no longer worked for AEW as Perry did in Japan. The assumption for the angle seems that Perry was fired for attacking Punk, but sadly Tony botched it. So there was a plan for it that could have worked well if the execution was a lot better.

But the simplest thing would be if he wanted to bring Jack Perry back, just bring Jack Perry back. Make him The Scapegoat or whateves if he wants. Cody is an exception, but many many many times in WWE when a wrestler quits/gets fired/contract expires and then they return, they just show up one day and maybe their absence is mentioned and maybe it isn't. Chris Masters didn't have an explainer video detailing his departure and what he was doing in the interim. Shoot, as popular as Chris Jericho is when he dipped in and out of WWE multiple times it was never addressed, he was there and then he wasn't and then he was again.

So while I'd say sure there was a plan in mind, but why?

See it all the time in nerd culture like MtG, D&D or Warhammer as more girls start to play the game, and we see more products aimed at them. Not sure what the fuck went wrong with the Perry stuff.  Tony gets into it in the scrum and some interviews about airing the Punk footage but what I am taking away is there was like set in stone plan to make damn sure everyone got the beats of the story they wanted to tell.  Either that or they expected the story to be told via working the dirt sheets and it did not.

IMO he if wanted Perry to be treated like he was fired, he should have personally came out Vince style on the PPV and demanded security remove him from the arena.  Sure security escorted him out, but it did not appear at all like he was not supposed to be there since he came out to help the EVPS.  Sure they rehire him Weds as a reward for helping him, but it is fucking mess.

Associating him with The Young Bucks is a terrible move. Somehow weaving The Bucks into the Jack v Punk narrative is awful. They are absolute dickheads. The segment wasn't great, they are awful all of the time outside of their ring work.

Jack Perry could have jumped the barrier and popped someone in the mouth and demanded a mic while being dragged away by security. Rinse and repeat the angle the next week, and so on.. then eventually TK appears on screen - unable to blink and looking like a dear in headlights - says, next week you'll get your chance - it's open mic night for Jack Perry.

On US viewership only that's about 33% market share for AEW.

People accuse me of saying stuff that isn't technically wrong either way to ensure that I'm always right. But he's right. Because there hasn't been any competition at this level in the market since early 2001, and even then it's debatable whether WCW was never a factor post 1999, or whether TNA was competition at all.

But then again, if you factor in international viewership, AEW would lucky to have 5% of what WWE does.
