Just some fun I thought we could have in the dog days of football season , going to try and put some schools up over the next few weeks so we can figure out the best starting 22(24) and maybe then have a tournament afterwards and kill some time.
Also not going to do fullbacks at this point. It's 2021 , they have become obsolute. Figure best 3WR or Two TE sets.
Going to start today with Florida State:
QB: Brad Johnson (Danny Kannell) RB: Warrick Dunn (Dalvin Cook) WR: Fred Biletnikoff WR: Anquan Boldin WR: Ron Sellers (L. Coles) TE: Nick O'Leary (??) OT: Walter Jones OG: Montrae Holland C: Rodney Hudson OG: Cameron Erving OT: Tra Thomas
DE: Peter Boulware DT: Corey Simon DT: Darnell Dockett DE: Brian Burns
LB: Derrick Brooks LB: Lawrence Timmons
CB: Deion Sanders CB: Jalen Ramsey S: Leroy Butler S: Dexter Jackson Nickle/Hybrid: Terrell Buckley
K: Sebastian Janikowski P: Rick Tuten
Just my first thoughts. They have a solid squad , that defensive backfield is scary great. Their offensive tackles might be the best to come (not sure) but they lack at guard , on the defensive line and especially tight end and quarterback.

Quite a surprise to find how deep I had to dig for some of those names, thought it would be a breeze at first. Really not a lot of options across both lines aside from the two HOFers.

I might put Rolle over Shields because of longevity and versatility. That’s a tough DE market. Half tempted to put Hendricks at end (where Wiki lists him for some reason) and Vilma at the other LB spot. The one source I used for Rolle listed him as a Safety rather than a Corner. You have to remember I'm a football rube compared to the likes of you, @admin, blindy, LT, etc. I just wanted to play along this one time  Just checked ProFootballReference to be sure. They have him listed as a CB in his 2nd & 3rd years before switching full time to safety. I was surprised how weak the U was at DE. They're stacked at RB, WR, DT, and solid most everywhere else, but DE was a black hole. One of the sources I used said Hendricks was drafted as a DE but quickly switched to LB. Swapping him for Eddie Edwards (who!?) at DE and adding Vilma at LB is the smart move. Duane Starks was apparently better than I thought? He had a lot of heat here with Ravens fans during his playing days so I just always assumed he was a bum.

Pretty wild that Olivier Vernon is third all time out of Miami for sacks in the NFL.
Time to rep the west coast with USC: QB: Carson Palmer RB: OJ Simpson (Marcus Allen) WR: Keyshawn Johnson WR: Lynn Swann WR: Frank Gifford TE: Charle Young LT: Anthony Munoz LG: Bruce Matthews C: Don Mosebar RG: Roy Foster RT: Ron Yary
DE: Jurrell Casey DT: Darrel Rusell DE: Everson Griffen LB: Junior Seau LB: Clay Matthews Jr LB: Willie McGinest LB: Clay Matthews III CB: Ronnie Lott CB: Lindon Crow S: Willie Wood S: Troy Polamalu
K: Cole Ford P: Glenn Walker Returner: Chad Morton
Now that's an offensive line! HOFer Ron Mix can't even crack the team. Imagine OJ and Marcus Allen running behind them. Got to be a strong favourite in this tournament.

I imagine as of now USC would be the favorite.
It's crazy to me how even power house teams like USC have huge holes at certain positions in their history. Like they didn't produce even a marginal tight end in the past 20-25 years?

MY Wisconsin Badgers
QB: Russell Wilson RB: Melvin Gordon WR: Al Toon WR: Lee Evans WR: Chris Chambers TE: Owen Daniels OT: Joe Thomas OG: Kevin Zeitler C: Mike Webster OG: Travis Frederick OT: Paul Gruber (Ryan Ramcyk , Mark Tauscher)
DE: JJ Watt DT: Tim Krumrie DE: Matt Shaugnessy OLB: TJ Watt MLB: DeAndre Levy MLB: Joe Schobert OLB: O'Brien Schofield CB: Troy Vincent CB: Nate Odomes S: Jim Leonhard S: Don Kindt
K: Jim Bakken P: Brad Nortman
KR: Michael Bennett PR: Jim Leonhard
Actually a pretty solid team , also talk about offensive lines. I cheated and slid Frederick over because we can't bump Mike Webster and really the RT spot could be anyone and then some.
The defensive line is solid with Watt and Krumrie (former 80's pro bowler) but that opposite end spot is brutal. I actually really like the shape of the LB corps with the other Watt and Levy with Schobert in the middle. Both solid players. Schofield is a tough look though.
The defensive backfield would be in trouble aside from Vincent. Leonhard is solid too and he and Vincent are two of the smarter football players you'll find so they could probably figures stuff out. Odomes is another former 80's pro bowler that I know little to nothing about.
I also like the ability on offense. That is the perfect type receiving corps for Russell. Deep threat in Evans , Chambers is solid , Toon as a great posession guy and Daniels was a really good receiving tight end for years. They could put up points for sure , especially with Gordon and his dual threat capability from the back. Maybe the best offensive put together so far as a grand total - which is crazy to say about the Badgers.

THE OHIO STATE
QB: Mike Tomczak RB: Eddie George WR: Michael Thomas WR: Santonio Holmes WR: Joey Galloway TE: Ben Hartsock OT: Orlando Pace OG: John Hicks C: LeCharles Bentley OG: Corey Linsley OT: Jim Lachey
DE: Cam Heyward DT: Dan Wilkinson DE: Ryan Pickett
OLB: Mike Vrabel LB: Chris Spielman OLB: Chase Young
CB: Sean Springs CB: Antoine Winfield S: Jack Tatum S: Malcolm Jenkins DB: Marshon Lattimore
K: Lou Groza P: Tom Tupa Returner: Ted Ginn Jr.
They really really get hurt by the quarterbacks. I was half tempted to put Justin Fields on there just because but got damn Ohio State. He's got great weapons , a decent offensive line and such too but I don't know. I wanted to put two tight ends in there and try to go with a power running attack and just say they'll run the ball 40 times a game but apparently no one produces tight ends at big colleges.
Their defensive is fucking legit though. Messed with the linebackers a bit because I figure both Jenkins and Tatum could easily drop down into the box and fill that extra slot and there is just too many DB's from Ohio State to keep them off the field. Their defensive front is solid too.
I think this is a team that would have to win a ton of sub 20 point scoring games , their defensive is capable but I'm a bit surprised given the success of the university lately.

OSU not producing pro quarterbacks is nothing new but it's still a surprise that their most credentialed guy is someone that I'd literally never heard of.
I'll stay out in Cali and do UCLA:
QB: Troy Aikman RB: Freeman McNeil FB: Mel Farr WR: Flipper Anderson WR: Tom Fears TE: Marcedes Lewis OT: Jonathan Ogden LG: Max Montoya C: Dave Dalby RG: Randy Cross RT: Luis Sharpe
DE: Kenyan Coleman DT: Kenny Clark DT: Mike Lodish LB: Donnie Edwards LB: Eric Kendricks LB: Jerry Robinson LB: Jamir Miller CB: Jimmy Johnson CB: Kermit Alexander S: Carnell Lake S: Kenny Easley
K: Norm Johnson P: Chris Kluwe Returner: Maurice Jones-Drew
Eschewing UT's no full back rule because the receiver depth isn't there. Plus I wanted an excuse to post my discovery that Mel Farr sings backing vocals on Marvin Gaye's What's Going On!
This is another team with nothing on the defensive line. Jamir Miller is their all time sack leader with just 36.
One the best special teams we've seen yet though, especially if you include 9 time pro bowler Matthew Slater.

Quite surprised they've never produced a real superstar at any of the skill positions (at least in the last 50 years). Running back is particularly thin. Brady behind that awesome offensive line might find a way though...

That's a pretty solid team. I might have gone Mark Andrews as an extra tight end , especially with Peterson back there who kind of struggles more in a spread out system. And I'd imagine with Baker you'd want to run the ball 30+ times a game.

Think I found an underrated contender:
QB: Dan Fouts RB: Jonathan Stewart WR: Ahmad Rashad WR: JJ Birden TE: Russ Francis TE: Ed Dickson LT: Gary Zimmerman LG: Kyle Long C: Max Unger RG: Fred Quillan RT: Geoff Schwartz
DE: George Martin DT: Haloti Ngata DT: DeForest Buckner DE: Arik Armstead
LB: Michael Walker LB: Kiko Alonso
CB: Mel Renfro CB: Walter Thurmond S: Jarius Byrd S: Patrick Chung S: TJ Ward
K: Tom Blanchard P: Josh Bidwell Returner: Kenjon Barner
Maybe not quite as great as I thought but I love their offensive and defensive lines and most of their secondary. I definitely think they would compete with a lot of the more storied and heralded football factories.
I would have loved to spread it out with Fouts but the receivers just weren't there aside from Rashad.

They've fallen off lately but , I like this one a ton:
QB: Payton Manning RB: Alvin Kamara WR: Carl Pickens WR: Anthony Miller (not the current one) WR: Donte Stallworth TE: Jason Witten OT: Chad Clifton OG: Trey Teague C: Scott Wells OG: John Gordy OT: Bruce Wilkerson

LB: Jerod Mayo LB: Al Wilson LB: Mike Lucci
CB: Dale Carter CB: Terry McDaniel S: Eric Berry S: Eddie Brown
K: Fuad Reveiz P: Dustin Colquitt Returner: Corrdarrelle Patterson
I think that's a contender. No huge weak spots except maybe interior of the offensive line but Manning could help with that a ton anyways.

The champions , aka the Golden Bears of Cali!
QB: Aaron Rodgers RB: Marshawn Lynch WR: Keenan Allen WR: Desean Jackson WR: Marvin Jones TE: Tony Gonzalez T: Tarik Glenn G: John Welbourn C: Alex Mack G: Ed White T: Todd Steussie
DE: Duane Clemons DT: Brandon Mebane DT: Tyson Alualu DE: Cameron Jordan
LB: Ron Rivera LB: Hardy Nickerson LB: Les Richter
CB: Nnamdi Asomugha CB: Dethla O'Neal S: Thomas Decoud S: Chris Conte
K: Doug Brien P: Bryan Anger
Returner: Shane Vereen
I think they have a legit shot at winning , especially making it to the end. The weakest spots are at guard and safety but with that receiving corps PLUS Gonzalez and Rodgers and Lynch in the backfield - I don't see how this offense gets stopped. Plus I really actually like their front seven. Definitely be some shootouts.

QB: YA Tittle (probably Burrow soon) RB: Jim Taylor WR: Odell Beckham Jr. WR: Jarvis Landry WR: Dwayne Bowe TE: David LaFleur OT: Andrew Whitworth OG: Alan Faneca C: Kevin Mawae OG: Trai Turner OT: Fred Turner
DE: Danielle Hunter DT: Leonard Marshall DT: Kyle Williams DE: Marcus Spears
LB: Kwon Alexander LB: Devin White LB: Deon Jones
CB: Patrick Peterson CB: Tredavious White S: Tyrann Mathieu S: Ryan Clark
K: Josh Jasper P: Donnie Jones Returner: Kevin Faulk
Damn may have found a new champ already , especially if Burrow takes off as expected and upgrades Tittle. Their receivers are great , their offensive line is elite , their dline is solid and their secondary is really fucking good.
And those linebackers , none may be HOF'ers but you won't find a faster group and playing behind that huge defensive front I think they would take over games and any one of them could help in coverage.

One more underrated gem of a team.
QB: Dan Marino RB: Tony Dorsett WR: Larry Fitzgerald WR: Tyler Boyd WR: Antonio Bryant TE: Mike Ditka OT: Bill Fralic OG: Mark May OC: Mark Stepnoski OG: Russ Grimm OT: Jimbo Covert
DE: Chris Doleman DT: Aaron Donald DT: Bill Maas DE: Bill McPeak
OLB: Ricky Jackson MLB: Joe Schmidt OLB: Hugh Green
CB: Darrelle Revis CB: Shawntee Spencer S: Ed Sharockman S: Carlton Williamson
K: Fred Cox P: Andy Lee
R: LeRod Stephens-Howling
They definitely have holes , especially in the secondary outside of Revis Island. What they do have though is legit and feature some of the best players of all time at their respective positions. Marino/Dorsett/Fitz is a hell of a trio behind what would be a really good offensive line - especially with Ditka also being there.
They have two HOF on the defensive line with Donald and Doleman who would make a great paid. Two HOFers at linebacker with Jackson and Schmidt as well with some solid players around them. The secondary would need the front seven to dominate though.
I like the team. Especially the trenches and skill guys.

Wow I'm really surprised by that Pitt team. That's one of the most well rounded teams in terms of having a legend at every position group.
Not shocked that LSU would be a final four team - they have the recency bias advantage as well.
Here's Nebraska to round out the top schools that have produced the most NFL players:
QB: Vince Ferragamo RB: Roger Craig RB: Ahman Green WR: Irving Fryar WR: Tim Smith TE: Johnny Mitchell LT: Link Lyman LG: Richie Incognito C: Mike Tinglehoff RG: Will Shields RT: Bob Brown
DE: Neil Smith DT: Ron McDole DT: Ndamukong Suh DE: Kyle Vanden Bosch LB: Lavonte David LB: Broderick Thomas LB: Jimmy Williams CB: Pat Fischer CB: Kent McCloughan S: Mike Brown S: Mike Minter
K: Josh Brown P: Sam Koch Returner: Tyrone Hughes
Strong on both lines but terrible receivers so I'm cheating slightly and putting two running backs. I'm learning about so many old players doing this!
