So recently Stardom held a big show ( or as big as a Joshi show can be in these covid times) and the main event from the show Utami vs Syuri for the main Stardom title has been getting a lot of praise. As the title states Dave Meltzer says it was the best women's match since the early 90's www.reddit.com/r/SquaredCircle/comments/nzjebo/wor_utami_hayashishita_vs_syuri_from_stardom/Other people have praised the match too including Tom Lawer and an ESPN reporter Here's highlights of the match The full match will be posted on Stardom World in the near future probably with english commentary( the ppv it was on had english commentary, a first for Stardom so I assume when they upload it they will use that commentary as well). I really liked it too personally for what it's worth some great technical wrestling at the start, and the match built up in intensity and ferocity as it went on.

This is a pretty big endorsement behind the idea that the Joshi scene is as good as it's been for a long time in terms of depth of talent and multiple promotions putting out a decent product.
I haven't seen the match yet but I've seen some online chat about how this was a match in the "NJPW main event style" and that's why Meltzer probably liked it so much. Have you noticed the Stardom style change recently Dex?

The immense about of reddit hype convinced me that I should seek out this match.
I actually did watch a few Stardom matches when Bea Priestley showed up in NJPW. Unfortunately I was not impressed, I found the matches to be pretty dull. Maybe this one will change my mind.

His opinion hold valve with some so it might help put some more eyes on them which is good.
Personally I don't think the guy knows what he is talking about most of the time.

I know this is a shitty thing to say but, I feel like once Dave's flavor of the month has a bad match, by his standards, he'll make some inappropriate remarks about things that have nothing to with said woman's ability. About her attractiveness or weight. However, it wouldn't be blatantly creepy or distasteful, it would be subtle.

Doesn't Matt Jackson own the record of 5+ star matches given out by Dave Meltzer? I never thought The Young Bucks were that great, not THAT great at least.

To be fair once he broke the ceiling on 5 stars, a 5 star match is just good rather than perfect these days...

Meltzer I do not think even tries to be objective with the Bucks. They played him so hard. Bucks are amazing as a team you bring your fed give a short red hot run to then have them move on to the next fed. Keep the Bucks in a fed, and after a year or so they start to lose their appeal as they tend to do the same match over and over again.
Glad to see the Joshi girls getting eyes on them. A lot of fun stuff this year with TJPW and Stardom.

But I always felt the top of the card Stardom match usually had that epic feel to them. It helps that Utami has really come into her own as champ she only started in 2018..

You can poke fun at Meltzer all you like but his opinions still count for a lot - apparently subscriptions to Stardom World are up 10% on the back of this match. Since NJPW bought Stardom, they've doubled and are in line to turn a million dollar profit this year.

Since NJPW bought Stardom, they've doubled and are in line to turn a million dollar profit this year. The problem is he only sees AEW and NJPW just one way and any criticism of those products is blasphemy according to him. I don't think there are that many dedicated Meltzer fans out there honestly. I would have never known these wrestlers or this match even existed without this thread for example and I think I am not alone in that. Just on the topic of Meltzer, I never got him. I never understood why one writer's opinion matters to so many. It's like video game reviews, I don't care some "video game journalist" site gave a game 6.5 out of 10 when I have played the series prior to and enjoyed my time with it nor do I need that to validate my purchase or opinion. Same with Meltzer, who cares what he rates stuff on. People can take art or something like wrestling whatever way they can and they are not wrong.

I have watched the match. It certainly ticked a lot of boxes. Even though I had never seen either wrestler before it still felt like a huge deal. English commentary helped.
The match was paced very well, worked similarly to an Okada epic where both combatants are exhausted, trying anything to get the win. 30 minute draw, challenger got the mic and asked for more time, champion accepted. This felt earned. They then wrestled to a double KO draw.
An excellent match that really embodied fighting spirit. I wouldn't praise it as highly as Meltzer did but does feel like a landmark match for the company.
