The National Hockey League's 104th season kicks off tonight. 

And what better way to start, than with an appropriate made for TV doubleheader. 

The first game (Penguins vs. Lightning) featuring the reigning back-to-back Stanley Cup champs starting their journey to become the first team to threepeat since the New York Islanders of the early 1980s. 

And then, the league's 32nd franchise making their debut against the 31st team (Kraken vs. Golden Knights).  Can Seattle do what Vegas did five years ago, and reach the near summit of hockey?

Only time will tell.  But the first step begins tonight.

I'm glad they kept the old National Hockey Night theme.

Enjoying the coverage so far, the skycam shots during play are fun and Ray Ferraro is a good commentator. Shame the game is a bit lifeless, Tampa in particular look very flat.

Vasilevsky agreed that Pittsburgh really should have been in the lead considering how that first period played out so he gave them a free goal at the start of the second.

Does anyone miss Pierre yet?

Late game was a lot more entertaining and competitive. Seattle showed some good fight coming back from three down to tie it up, but Vegas got the benefit of a fairly dubious winner off a skate upheld on review. If that doesn't count as a "distinct kicking motion" I don't know what could.

Looking forward to the Rangers opener tomorrow!

NHL on TNT premiered tonight and AEW didn't want to run a late show and get in the habit of being preempted for hockey every Wednesday, so they moved the show to Saturday night this week. It's also the main reason Dynamite is moving to TBS in January.

Season opener against a divisional opponent I would say this is an important game.  Throw in all the conversations regarding these two teams all summer too.  He had all summer to rest, plus only 43 career games.  I mean he is an adult with a nice contract capable of playing two games in a row.  What's the point if he can't go for the season opener or can't play back to back.  He is the number one goalie isn't he?  This is on the coaches of course. I'm sure Shesterkin wants to play.  This is like the Yankees signing Cole to a massive contract, but not start the season opener.

What do you mean backed down? The channel can't show two TV shows at the same time. TNT is showing hockey for the first time ever tonight and Dynamite would have been airing at like 10pm or later, depending how long the game goes.

Kakko is going to score so many goals this season when he starts putting away the looks that Panarin makes for him.

Fox is already doing double shifts because Tinordi has looked fucking terrible.

Agree with Fox.  Love that he put himself in that position to have a quality scoring chance.  Blais was the best player on the ice for the Rangers.  Outside of Fox and Blais the rest were not doing much if anything at all.  Tinordi is awful and should be benched and Strome ruined the Rangers powerplay with bad puck handling and turnovers.

They came out hot, which is nice because last season had so many games where they weren't ready, but it's gone real cold since then. Not a lot of cohesion (literally two times in the last couple of minutes our guys have run into each other) and absolutely zero impact from Mika, Kreider, Strome so far.

Oof that was a rooooooough period. Rangers had like one shot?

Leafs are getting dicked by the refs tonight. Absolutely dicked.

They’ve hit the post like 5 times and have had no calls go their way. It’s a miracle they’re winning but Montreal will tie it. You watch.
