That’s where the politics get the most traction.

It has to do with the large percentage of the player base being black, but few coaching and front office positions. Seems there should be a lot of black players qualified to be coaches, so why do so few get hired?

NBA isn't far off with player base being black yet two of the top teams of the East are Charlotte and Miami and both have non-black POC as head coaches, one of which who has won a couple of NBA Titles. 

NBA has zero female players but people wanted Becky Hammon to get a HC gig. MLB has no female players yet everyone was happy Ng got the Marlins GM gig.

They deserve the shit, not because Culley was a good coach, but because it looks like Culley was hired as a token black coach to try to repair the Watson relationship with apparently no plan to keep him on past a season, which also might speak to why they didn’t have interest in interviewing several of the more highly touted black coaching candidates last season. Culley was considered a bad decision by practically everyone at the time and they’re taking advantage of the perception they helped create to get rid of him, even if he overperformed. .

Not really knowing anything about the Texans, this is the appearance from the outside looking in.

I agree they haven't covered themselves in glory, but I don't know what keeping this guy on for a year longer would have done to help them. The players played hard for him but he looked like he lacked basic football IQ with game decisions and clock management. Interestingly, it's Flores they seem to be after, which leaves open the possibility that the Texans were prepared to keep Culley on past this season if such a candidate failed to hit the market. I think there is a tendency to see everything the Texans do as stupid and incompetent because so many things they've done have been exactly that, and maybe this is another example, who knows.

I don’t disagree with Todd about his ineptitude , but when you hire a token coach and fire him after “exceeding” expectations there is going to be backlash.

And I would imagine most people who assumed he exceeded expectations weren’t actually watching just how inept he was at coaching. Declining stuff like 3 & 10 so he could punt on 4 & 15 on a nothing game on a Sunday that no one sees. On top of everything else week in and week out with just basic game management gaffes.

Culley was terrible , he should have never been hired is probably more the issue than him being fired.

I don’t think that the firing is stupid, I think it’s just way more gasoline to the fire that the hiring itself was stupid with poor motivations. If you’re firing a coach after a year, you really should be firing everyone that was a part of the poor decision making that led to the hire.

So yeah Flores might be a real POS.

Mayock is out as Raiders GM. It really sucks for him as Gruden was the one calling the shots anyways and he got the short end of everything.

Really hope he comes back to TV right away. Love DJ but really missed Mayock.

What sucked for Mayock wasn't that the draft picks didn't work out but it was the terrible character assessments of Ruggs & Arnette, two of the team's 1st rounders. Maybe Gruden made the picks but he isn't the one scouting these guys year round and wasn't alone in the interviews. No one saw Ruggs doing what he did and I am sure Arnette didn't tout a gun around at Ohio St but still that's terrible to have the misses the Raiders have had via the draft. 

I don't know if Jeremiah gets bumped back from NFL Network, I expect Mayock to replace Joel Klatt as the FOX/FS1 Draft guru head. That's one of the very few things FOX is missing vs say ESPN with Kiper/McShay and NFL Network with Brooks and DJ. Klatt is great for the college gameday stuff, Mayock would be terrific for them for the draft process.

Giants GM search is down to three: Ryan Poles from the Chiefs, Adam Peters from the 49ers, and Joe Schoen from the Bills - all pretty good options in terms of successful organisations and who they've been able to learn from.

Slightly confusingly though they've requested to interview Dan Quinn for HC which either means all three have him on their shortlist, or the "GM leading the HC hire" line wasn't exactly true.

On the other end of the coaching tree, feels like another mistake for the Cowboys to keep giving a coach chances after they prove they don’t deserve them. I get the improvement this year, but that decision at the end (and the excuses made every day since) was fireable.

Obviously he deserves a share of the blame for the run play but potentially allowing Kellen Moore to leave in favour of keeping McCarthy seems like such a Cowboys decision.

Can't believe Gannon is leading the Texans search gig. He was terrible with game adjustments, had scheme over player fit. Would not blitz at all, despite stats showing it was best to hit QBs like Zach Wilson into doing it.
