Joey revealed he was pulled from TV after breaking Kingston's orbital bone with the stiff superkick delaying the Jericho match and this angle they are doing now. Kind of fucked up given Kingston purposely stopped using most of his best moves to set an example and work safer. Says he thinks that is why Tony cut him. And it would be the right move. No reason a superkick should be breaking bones. Didn't Hangman flip Starks wrong and nearly crippled him, why are we picking who to punish or not if we're Tony Khan? I think Janela's own doing was when Cornette called him Jelly Janela and that until very late in his AEW tenure, Janela's conditioning and shape was underwhelming to say the least

Joey did force a card change, Starks did not.
Joey calling up CYN. Likely gonna do his right wing gimmick there.

He's treated as a main event player under him. Still think he does that JJ's Spring Break PPV. Would like to see him in MLW just to see that nZo vs Janela match we all were deprived of. Then again, Janela absolutely shat on Court Bauer so NO CHANCE.

Janela would have to be the biggest disappointment in AEW. In a company that didn't hold it's talent to the same physical standard as the WWE, Janela still came off poorly and whatever charisma he had in GCW was completely lost in AEW. I think the only noteworthy match of his entire run was against Omega on Dark where he just took a lot of bumps to really help shine Omega up. I think that sums him up nicely because he never did anything to get himself over.
I'd like to think the releases of Marko Stunt and Joey Janela is a concession that maybe some of the early critics of AEW may have had a point.

For me, it is Chuck Taylor that is the biggest letdown. Janela I liked but knew his limitations and how hurt he got during his death match days. Also out of the ring he can be weird and start drama.
Joey getting cut is no shock, we all assumed he would not be resigned. Tony needs to clean house. I know he wants the big tent with a huge roster, and the fed is basically run by the American taxpayer, but still, it is stupid to have guys signed that you pay to just sit in catering and only work once a month. Cut half of those people and the rest can now work twice a month, which is an improvement at least.
For people not really familiar with Joey, this is a great doc on him and why I do love him. But like Chucky T, he gives me nothing to get behind in AEW.

The thing with Taylor, at least the Best Friends shtick got over and while he and Trent maybe the least interesting members of their own stable they fit into AEW. I can sort of see the disappointment in that he was 33 years old when AEW started, prime years as a Pro Wrestler and he never did anything to get himself over as a television star. He was just happy to be there and allowed others like Cassidy to get ahead of him instead of really putting himself in that mix.
On the other hand, Janela just never got over at any point despite being one of the hot break-out indie acts. It was like whatever charisma and appeal he had was completely taken from him when Penelope broke up with him that final time. He was poor in every facet and it was clear AEW had buyers remorse very early on. They never gave him the ball, never allowed him to get over and constantly embarrassed him.

I also think Janela lost a lot of steam jobbing to the guy who took his ex girlfriend, Kip Sabian.

Khan never had any plans to feature Kiss and seemingly only kept her around as a diversity hire and for backstage morale more than anything else. They were clearly low on the totem pole so if Janela had any brains he would have moved on from her quick smart.
It just seemed like a case of Janela being a team player being saddled with her and then being completely and utterly neglected.

Kiss is one of the most athletic wrestlers on the AEW roster, if Khan knew what he was doing, he would have her in the slot that Khan has Orange Cassidy and his played out gimmick has. You see one Orange Cassidy match, you've seen them all. Kiss had more fanfare from the LGBTQ+ community than Janela, Kiss carried Lucha Underground's final season at some points. It just wasn't watched at all by anyone so it went unnoticed. Kiss is well respected and loved as a locker room leader, Kiss has a purpose on the roster outside of hitting quota. Janela reminds me a lot of Steven Richards. He is adept and smart to latch onto trending things like BWO, Right to Censor, Victoria, Abyss & Daffney.

I'm not knocking Sonny Kiss and think she deserves some more exposure on the roster, but she was verrrry green during the feud with Janela and it showed. And she hasn't improved a ton in the year or so she's been featured on Dark.
Wrestlers that get featured on Dark and grow/improve almost always end up with a spot on Dynamite or Rampage. Kiss would probably get a push if she got any better but she hasn't.

Absolute missed opportunity to not give her a chance in the women's division which I have gone on record of saying needed to happen for at least 2 years! I mean how many botched moonsaults does Red Velvet have to show you she isn't it? Or giving TV/wins to Brandi Rhodes knowing she had 1 foot out the door. What are we doing Tony Khan? The Kiss/Janela feud deserved at least Rampage to end it on but the guys like Jericho, SCU, Lynn probably didn't think it deserved the air time and would rather continue to use more ex WWE talent for the time slots.

Early on there seemed a plan to push Kiss. Kiss even had a special Rumble Roses type of entrances on a ppv preshow. Kiss using a style based on WWE divas which wasn't a good style didn't help.

They featured everyone in the beginning but I never got the sense they were comfortable with making Kiss a regular. Just here's your moment, OK, next.
Compare that to the amount of chances the Dark Order got.

Wasn’t sure where to post this but we have a Kenny Omega update!
He is currently recovering from knee surgery that takes about 10 weeks. He is also scheduled for hernia surgery at the end of this month, which has about a 2 month recovery time.
No date set for his return but it’s looking like he’ll be out until at least June, possibly longer.

No way he returns in June after not being able to work out for many months. I see him sitting home until late summer to return in peak shape again so when he returns he will come in red hot.
Hope that is all the work he needs done. Sounded like he was really beat up but fighting through the various injuries he had.

Fightful has reported that Ethan Page recently signed a contract extension with AEW.
With how The Men of the Year have been on a slow upswing, and with Sky winning the TNT title, it's looking like Page will finally be getting a decent push. He deserves it. Way too talented to just be a lackie in a lower card stable. Now when that push is coming remains to be seen, but hey. He's got lots of time.

Chris Daniels told Marko Stunt he was released today. Claimed that AEW needed to start to reign in the roster and make some budget cuts, as with the change in plans for Jurassic Express after he got hurt, they are going in a different direction and Stunt was no longer needed.
Weird, that Daniels is calling, but looks like Daniels is transitioning to the back to do AEW Talent Relations. Which makes sense, he is 52 and had a pretty bad health scare.

I’m 99% sure that match against Danielson was his last. He may not officially retire, but he got that match in so he knows if he never wrestles again he at least went out in a cool way. Pretty sure this story is just confirming what we already knew. And there will be more of these throughout the year. There are going to be a lot of contracts not renewed and a lot of lower card talent transitioning to paid by appearance-type deals.

I expect a whole lot of the original guys to get released. If they are not on a show every week then Tony really should not be keeping them. Offer them RoH work maybe, but not AEW work.

Marko Stunt gave Jurassic Express an identity IMHO. I found him to be a joke but still terrible he was kinda left in the dark throughout. Christian is such a bad fit for Luchasaurus & Jungle Boy. Yeah Janela mentioned CD is doing talent relations, kinda put him on blast in the interview with Denise Salcedo.

Well, Janela is always a guy to take with a grain of salt. He is notoriously moody guy. Daniels as talent relations makes a lot of sense as he was the trailblazer that helped the indy scene take off. And sure he will get a ton of heat in the future for being the one to play the grim reaper of AEW.
Everyone had to see stunt being cut. Even when he was on TV each week, he was not really doing anything of value. That is who AEW needs to start cutting. He got work through the pandemic, should be happy for that alone.

The problem is if they cut certain Indy darlings, AEW begins to lose it's identity to the fans as the WWE alternative and if they continue to sign ex WWE guys, regardless of their origins, they begin to become what they have meant to fight against.

Is Marko Stunt really an indy darling? Even future WWE HOFer Rosa Mendes put over Marko Stunt in a video. IIRC Marko Stunt was trusted to be Lance Archer's 1st opponent to help elevate Archer looking like a monster after a long hiatus in Japan. He also got in matches with Brodie Lee, Stunt works as the "Spike Dudley" sort of punching bag to help get the big guy some heat and make their moves look amazing.

Rosa Mendes was one of the best female valets of the decade, she made The Colons actually relevant! Seth Rollins even tweeted about Marko Stunt, kid is a draw.
