Played a spot of tennis today for the first time in over 20 years. My stamina ain't what it used to be. But that's not the point of this thread. Being active today reminded me of an idea I first had after a conversation with iron maiden a few months back. Any athletes, or ex-athletes, on PW? I know 🤯 and spladle wrestled, Neo Zeed did professional MMA, Maiden played rugby, and UT played football. What about the rest of you? As for me.... Baseball- 1st grade-senior year of high school with the exception of my junior year. My favorite sport to play. Shut up UT. Soccer- 1st grade-sophomore year of high school minus a year or two I sat out Lacrosse- 3rd grade-8th grade Basketball- 1st grade, 5th grade, and sophomore year of high school. That's just organized rec league/high school sports. We were forever playing pickup games in my neighborhood. The big ones were baseball during baseball season, football in football season, and basketball during basketball season. Plus some soccer and the occasional street hockey game. Even some tennis on rare occasions and lacrosse on occasions rarer still. And of course there were our beloved house wrestling leagues, which was like backyard wrestling minus 98% of the stupidity, though I was of course largely responsible for the 2% of dumb stuff. Also went bowling a few times a year and spent some Friday nights holding onto the wall as I slowly moseyed my way around the ice skating rink. Softball- On and off from 2004ish-2012ish. Co-ed Flag Football- Two or three seasons around 2012 Golf- A dozen or so outings during the 2000s-early 2010s

Our people don't sport. We are the National shame of Canada aka those who can't even skate or stay upright on ice. My daughter broke her clavicle curling. CURLING!
Rubgy was the only sport I was ever decent at and I suspect it's because I had lots of not so hidden aggression. My mom on the other hand I found out-just before Christmas-was a college ping pong/table tennis champ.

I always wanted to wrestle in school but none of the schools I went to here in Texas had wrestling.
A funny story I told my oldest boy recently when we were throwing the football around and he was blown away at how perfect my spirals were. I played little league football when I was 12 we played the fuck out of backyard neighborhood games where I was always the quarterback but never got to play little league until that year. The 2 head coaches were black guys(which only matters to the story because blacks play football completely differently than whites here in the South) and I was 1 of maybe 3-4 white kids on the whole team. They were cool guys they would always give me a ride home after practice.
I tried out for quarterback at the first practice and did really good out of maybe like 6 kids that tried out they made me the 2nd string quarterback behind their nephew, who was really fast and could throw the ball fucking twice as far as I could. But they would throw me in there to run plays sometimes in practice. I couldn't run as fast as him or throw as far as him but I knew how to lead a receiver running across the field better than he could and I guess from watching Warren Moon so much I always threw these perfect spirals(I would grip the laces with my thumb).
The coaches ran the ball almost every play and it was almost always a quarterback draw where they would just let their nephew take off running. One game they finally put me in to play quarterback and I was so fucking stoked, my mom and grandma was there and were all excited. I got my chance and the coaches called a fucking quarterback sneak on 1st down, of course I was too slow and all 11 kids on defense dog piled me right at the snap. The coaches called the exact same play on 2nd down and again on 3rd down and that was the end of my quarterback career hahaha. They never even called a pass play, just 3 quarterback draws in a row, I lost yards on all 3 plays and that was it, they never let me play quarterback again. I never tried to play football again after that season, we never won a game it sucked.

Played football from the 4th grade on , in high school was one year JV and three year varsity. Played S/WR and loved every single second of it. I would compare myself to a white , extremely less athletic Ed Reed. Was a decent athlete for a high school student but really played more on instinct than anything and was good with the ball in my hands and liked to throw my body around. We didn't pass a ton on offense so it was a lot of blocking and screens. Really miss kickoff coverage the most of anything , I'd give anything to go do that again. Nothing else like it for a young football player. Our team was decent , lost the game before state twice.
Played basketball in 4th - 7th grade. Skipped 8th grade. Was 2 year JV and 2 year Varsity in High School. Was okay as a player , played guard , was a decent ball handler and passer but really streaky shooter. We had two really good and big kids on our team though out of my class. One kid was like 6'4" but built like a shit house. Great post guy and rebounder. Other kid was a lanky scrawny 6'5" but was an exceptional ball handler and shooter. Sort of like a KD type as he was the tallest kid on the team but everything went through him on the perimeter. Actually a good team overall - lost in state twice though. Was never as much of a fan of organized basketball at that age , I just didn't appreciate the strategy and gameplanning as much as football. It was fun though and provided some great memories.
Still try to play pick up games of basketball when I can. I prefer a nice 3 on 3 game with some friends. I'm old though so don't have nearly the hops I used to have. Don't play football unless its in the yard with my kid though. Too old for that shit.
Live vicariously through my kids now. Son plays Hockey , Football and Soccer though he's not that good at football yet. Plays Wing in Hockey and Goalie in Soccer.
Daughter plays Basketball , Volleyball , Soccer and Figure Skates. She's really fucking good at basketball for her age and if she sticks with it I think she can be awesome. Her whole team really has a chance to do some things. She's good at volleyball. Good at soccer and plays midfield and she's been figure skating since she was three so she's pretty great at that as well though she wants to step away to focus on other sports.

I played baseball and football through Junior High before deciding I liked earning money more and getting a job roofing houses that lasted through baseball and the first few weeks of football. I was better at baseball but ran into a coach I hated so it was easier to leave.
I play racquetball now with a work friend or two. It’s really good fun and one of my few opportunities to get competitive.

I've played soccer my whole life. New season started yesterday, it was nice to get out there again after the last couple of years have been interrupted/shortened by lockdowns. I'm thinking this might be my last year (although I've said that before) because I'd like to give something else a go before I'm too old to be at least halfway decently athletically. I'm considering baseball as there is a club close to my new place.

I played both soccer and baseball as a kid. I was on our school basketball team as well but didn’t play it in an organized league (because there wasn’t one where I grew up).
Baseball and basketball didn’t stick but I played soccer well into high school. Tried out for the team in my senior year but didn’t make it. I was a reserve player but was never needed. The team sucked and got shit kicked every game so I didn’t miss much. I also showed up for tryouts my first year of college but my 5’9” white Canadian ass didn’t even take the field. I saw the landed immigrants and naturalized citizens I was up against I sulked back to my room. I’m not trying to be racist I’m just stating facts. It was like 50 Ronaldos showed up and then there was me.
I’m an anomaly in Canada in that I never played hockey. I can skate and I would play the odd pick up game with friends, but I never joined a league. I don’t know why, it just wasn’t for me. It wasn’t the physicality (I was an asshole on the soccer field) I think it just seemed like too much work and not enough fun.
I was on a bowling team in college. That was just an excuse to get drunk on Mondays though.

Played hockey from age 5-16, besides those first few years our teams sucked maybe winning 1 or 2 games a year. I played left wing and was a poor kid's Cam Neely like power forward who could get the puck in the net. I think I had 5 hat tricks in my career and hit some poor kid through the entrance gate into the spectators one time. I also played rec for a few years after but its been close to 2 decades since I put on skates. Baseball was from ages 6-14, my dad was the coach for a few years and we faired pretty well winning league a couple of times and getting into the second round of provincials. I was a utility man playing catcher, first base, second base, and all the fielding position (CF, LF, RF). Hindsight though I wish I was a pitcher since I would have been the only left hand arm on the team. In practices I could throw a nasty splitter but I had no confidence controlling my fastball so I never took it on. I also sucked just throwing it back to the pitcher when I played catcher which is why I switched out of that rather quickly. Football was from 11-17 six man style. Our high school allegedly had one of the most successful 6 man programs in all of North America winning 7 or 8 provincial titles all told iirc (3 during my stint and I think 1 more after). Our coaches got invited to camps in Texas and Oklahoma and our center made it to the Junior ranks winning a few Canadian Bowl titles (with the Saskatoon Hilltops if saskie native RT is curious). I was the running back behind our all star center and while I can't report any 4 touchdown games I still got my share. We routinely beat our league opponents by 30-40 a game. For comparisons sake I modeled my game as a hybrid of Bo Jackson and Barry Sanders. I was hard to tackle and could be elusive with quick feet for a stout person. I still play golf, my small town has one of the more attractive golfing resorts in Sask. so I pretty much grew up with a club in my hand. At my best I got down to a mid 80's score in my early 20's but I haven't got time to practice anymore. I now struggle to break 100 but it's still fun. I also curled from ages 5-18 and actually skipped a team to a local bonspiel win. Just beer league type stuff though, nothing serious even though our area produced 2 different provincial men's champions that went on to win a Brier and be runner up once. We also have a transplanted local that won the Canadian Women's Curling Championship in 2011 iirc. Basketball was never co-ed at my high school so it was just street ball after school. I'm much too short to be any good anyway, I was a half decent passer that's about it.

I use to be in Tak Kwon Do when I was a kid don’t remember how old I start exactly got one belt to go to get a black belt but I have to go to Arizona to take the test and passed it to get it my dad who at the time was alive say couldn’t find the hotel I find out later it wasn’t true because he was kinda overprotective. My instructor did try to bring his master who lives in Arizona to come here to do the black belt test so I can get my black belt but he didn’t.
I get so bored I want out which I did get out and start get into playing basketball for 7th grade for the middle school I went to same with 8th grade. Didn’t make the team for high school wasn’t good enough but I did play plenty of summer league basketball so there is that.
That is the only two sports I participate

I was in fact a championship...Bowler.
But only on a team, as a kid, and they did most the work. First place though, bitches.
I haven't bowled often in the last 20 years, excluding on the Wii (where I had 7 perfect games), but when I get back in the swing of things...I'm still pretty decent. Not championship quality, but I can hold my own against the hoi polloi.

I did little league baseball when I was a kid for a bit, nothing crazy or anything. I was terrible. LOL. But I was like 8-9 years old. Same with tennis, did a little bit in a club when I was a kid. Outside of gym activities, nothing too crazy as far as team stuff goes. Nowadays, I mostly do jogging(Well when the weather is good ) on free time but that's more physical activity. Problem is everyone has a different schedule and it's tough to get everybody together for something.

YMCA Basketball from 1st-5th grade. I had a great shot, decent reflexes and could rebound pretty well. Also terrible stamina, lack of speed and my handles sucked. The real nail in the coffin though was everyone outgrew me by middle school. I never made it past 6 ft. Lost my passion and gave it up to focus on other interests after failing a tryout. Later in life it was fun to surprise a few people in pickup games though. No one ever expects the hippy white boy to start draining shots.
In my 20's me and a large group of friends started playing pickup baseball games and I fell in love. Seriously regretted giving it up as a kid. I was a god awful hitter but those reflexes came in handy in the infield. Natural glove hand, but lacked the speed and arm strength compared to others so the only place I really excelled at was 1B. Not exactly the ideal position for a righty to be at.
I miss playing baseball more than anything. The smell of the grass, hearing the crack of the bat, getting checked out by girls with my baseball pants on, making dirt angels, partying on the field and in the dugout, ruining fields in the rain like a bunch of fucking assholes. It was semi-adult Sandlot. Good times.

@admin out there achieving more in two games than I did in entire seasons. It helps being on a good team. I've played 10 seasons now of club soccer and this is by far the best team I've played on. We've got a few guys who were playing semi-pro level in the previous couple of years and they are just a dream to play with. I've taken a few humblings over the years at previous clubs so I'm enjoying being on the other side of it.

I played soccer, football (rugby league), field hockey as a kid. Didn’t really enjoy any of it.
Absolutely loved Judo as it wasn’t a team sport it was about the individual. My sensei was a mid 30s guy who lived at home with his mother and acted and looked (despite being crazy agile) like comic book guy. So this meant he had unlimited time to dedicate to Judo so I’d be there 3 times a week for 5 hours a session + tournaments. The best shape I’ve ever been in, when parents got divorced I suddenly had to move so no more judo.

What the heck. Let's do this... *lmao I wrote a ton and only got through elementary school after edits. Wasn't kidding when I said these posts were going to be long. Look away now ye of faint heart. Soccer: Part One of ?The first sport I was really interested in. Was just wondering how an American boy who grew up in the 80s (when soccer was far less popular than it is today) simply HAS to play soccer. My working theory is because kiddie me was a big fan of this awesomely title book called Soft Skull Sam about a brave young soccer loving lad who works to overcome his fear of heading the ball. So this was the first sport I played and the gateway for all the others. 1st & 2nd Grade- This was a beginner's league for youngsters largely focused on teaching the fundamentals. Think we only practiced on Saturdays. Practices consisted of two halves. First half you'd spend a lot of time standing in line waiting to do basic drills. Second half was a scrimmage. It was honestly pretty boring and forgettable. Chances are I spent most of these practices playing with the grass and/or picking flowers, chatting in line with my neighbor and/or cousin, and mostly daydreaming about the cool cartoons I had watched that morning, or in a worst case scenario MISSED because of stupid boring soccer practice. Fwiw my brother, who was something of an athletic prodigy, expressed his hatred of this league in later years. He claims the thin, mustachioed 'coach' confined him to defense and wouldn't let him cross the midfield line because he scored too many goals. 3rd Grade- Aged out of the clinic league to play for the local CYO team. CYO stands for Catholic Youth Organization. This was a once prestigious Baltimore-based league where local heroes like Barry Stitz, Jason Dieter, and the great Tim Wittman cut their teeth, but either was, or soon would be, in decline as the suburbs experienced a population explosion as people fled the city in droves. Honestly my favorite thing about this league was not the games, but traveling to the other fields. I enjoyed the rides. As for the teams… There was the incredibly named Our Lady of Victory with their swank black & yellow vertical striped uniforms. We called them The Bumblebees and this rather mediocre squad failed to live up to the promise of their name. Then there was Little Flower who were as intimidating as their name suggests. They hosted the one and only tournament I played in during elementary school. We were one and done after losing to a team called ROX or Rox from two counties over. They wore sweet black & red checkered uniforms. Years later I'd discover they were a powerful club team. So the fact that my local CYO team played them tight is a feather in our cap. Then there was St. Joseph's of Texas who were not, in fact, located in THAT Texas, which bummed kiddie me out more than you could ever imagine when it came time to play them on the road. St. Elizabeth were the league brutes. They weren't very good. You'd beat them, but you'd also get beat up before leaving Utz Twardowicz Field black & blue and bruised all over. They made you earn it. Cathedral were the snooty rich kids with a corrupt chubby cheeked friar referee who seemed to step straight out of a Robin Hood ballad. The villainous clergyman once had a heated incident with our star player before screwing us over in the rain. Whatta jerk! And there were many others but I’d like to finish this novella tonight. This was my favorite year of soccer yet and would end up being my second favorite overall. This was the first year I really Got It. We had two main coaches. Assistant coach was an old school hardass from the soccer hub of Trinidad & Tobago. I think he played professionally or semi-professionally or for their national team or something like that. He was friends with Richard Chinapoo! So even though he made us run laps ALL THE TIME and then made us run some more FOR LITERALLY EVERY MINOR MISTAKE he had my respect because Richard Chinapoo! The head coach was a large, jovial police officer who could have passed for Big Boss Man's slightly smaller twin. He was part of our big group that went camping together outside of Gettysburg, PA every August for years. Just a few months ago I learned from my dad that he was dating the mother of one of the kids on my team. Until then I never did know how this childless random who one day appeared outta nowhere got involved. The two coaches definitely had a good cop/bad cop (no pun intended) thing going on, but it worked for me, and it worked for my team. We only lost a few games and finished 2nd in the league iirc. We never could get passed the pesky powerhouse that was St. Ursula. They whipped us the first time (or year) and we played them tight the next time/year before they squeaked out a victory in the end. I credit their psychological advantage. See, because rumor had it their field was bigger than all the other fields. So we had to run EVEN MORE LAPS to prepare for their slightly bigger field when it came time to play them. Ugh! I usually played fullback. Do they still call it that? I don't think they do. Haven't heard that term in years at any rate. So let's go with defense. I usually played defense. But I moved up to halfback/midfield this year and scored my first goal against Sacred Heart of Glyndon. It was a game winner, too! But here's the kicker. My dad wasn't there. He went to all the other games. Only went away without us one time a year when he'd go camping with his fellow dad friends in Best Virginia during a weekend in early October. Thing is something major ALWAYS went down the ONE weekend a year he was away. This time I scored my first goal. Another year I got a concussion. Another year my brother broke his collarbone. Always something... Also scored against lowly Little Flower and…Mt. Carmel, I think it was, for a WHOPPING THREE GOALS.....which is my career high lol. Look, I told ya I usually played fullback defense! The most embarrassing moment of my sporting career also took place this year. We were playing at St. Anthony’s on or around Halloween. A football game was going on right next to our soccer field. I was chasing after the ball. It had just crossed over the white line. I heard the whistle so I picked it up for the throw in. Whoops! It only crossed the goalie box(?) line, not the out of bounce line. The whistle came from the football field. D'oh! I dropped the ball like a hot potato but it was too late. My face was sooooo red. I could feel it. Was razzed about that for literal decades. Biggest boner since Abner, if not Merkle. So embarrassing. EDIT: Forgot the biggest boner of them all. Biggest Boners of the 20th Century, Ranked
1. Buckner's Boner 2. Merkle's Boner 3. Abner's Boner 4. Baker's Boner We had an end of season party at McDonald's. Feel like we ALWAYS had McDonald's parties back then. The 80s & 90s were different, man. The average American LOVED Mickie D's in those days rather than looking down on it. Good times. Penn St. played football on tv that day. It was raining hard either here or at the Penn State game. I could probably find the date if I really wanted to lol. Anyway, the coaches awarded me the Most Improved Player Award and I was presented with an actual plaque(!) either that afternoon or at the big end of the year banquet celebration around Christmas on a night when Kentucky were on tv in a college basketball game. Rather than thinking "I sucked. But now I suck a little less!" I was super proud of my Most Improved Player Award. Feels like just the sort of thing my first soccer hero Soft Skull Sam would have won. EDIT 4th Grade: Initially got this year mixed up with 3rd Grade. Finding my MIP plaque set me straight and clarified a bunch of other things. Some of the 3rd Grade stuff probably happened this year instead. Who knows for sure! It was 30+ years ago! But I am trying my best to be accurate and will correct when necessary. My team was good again (maybe this was the year we almost beat St. Ursula and came in 2nd place?) while I was once again stuck at fullback for most or all of the year. Agree with @admin that fullback is important. Very important even! Thing is it's just not very sexy. I liken it to being an offensive lineman in football where you do the grunt work while the skill position players and goal scoring forwards/strikers grab all the headlines and adulation. There just isn't much to write about as a fullback. Highlights for even your best fullbacks are things like "Guy was dribbling and I stopped/took the ball from him." Or "Made a nice clearing pass." Or best case scenario "Saved a goal when the goalie was out of position." Now I'd like to think I pulled off the latter at least once in my many years of fullbacking, but I can't remember ever doing so. Therefore I probably never did. Sad. 5th Grade: Thought I skipped this year. Last night's memorabilia search confirmed it. Here are some potential reasons for my first soccer retirement... -It just wasn't fun anymore. This is the most likely reason. I peaked in 3rd grade. 4th grade was a step back. By 5th grade it's entirely possible that I just went all 'Meh. Soccer is boring and I want to do other things now.' -So many people left the city for the suburbs and either found a new local program to play for or dropped soccer altogether that we just didn't have enough people to field a team anymore. 2nd most likely reason. Of course I'd have been loyal to my squad in this scenario and refused to play for another team. -My cousin, who was also my best friend on the team, moved to Pennsylvania the summer before this season and I was just so heartbroken to lose my closest soccer buddy that I couldn't go on anymore. Unlikely, but I can't 100% rule it out. My greatest memory of this season even before confirmation that I didn't actually play was wandering away from my brother's games to walk through the nearby woods where I checked out minnows and crayfish in the stream.....while secretly hoping to spot a sea serpent (in a creek that peaked at like 3 feet deep lol) or glimpse a Bigfoot because I had an overactive imagination and read entirely too many books on unexplained mysteries.

Fullback is definitely still used! You would have been ahead of your time playing there in the 80s/90s when it was the position for those talented enough to be a winger, or big enough to be a centreback - these days it's arguably the most important position in football!
Soft Skull Sam also sounds like he was ahead of his time, given these days there are various restrictions on young kids heading the ball in junior soccer. I'm all in favour of it, I've never been a fan. Even at 32 I still avoid headers unless I have no other alternative.
Damn St Ursula and their mythical big pitch.

If Best Virginia is an intentional typo to refer to West Virginia as the better Virginia over Virginia, I'm triggered into demanding to know why. But also, being raised on the right side of the Potomac, I also understand the VA/MD rivalry (and still find it amazing that I enjoyed The Wire so much and love Baker-man so much).

While not to the level of Soft Skull Sam, I never liked headers either. My high school team's sole offensive strategy was to bring the ball down the sidelines and cross it into the center where our two undersized forwards/strikers were expected to head it into the goal. I question that strategy in hindsight. In real time I was now glad to be stuck at fullback and more than happy to let others claim the glory (and sore heads) for themselves. It wasn't even fair. The little she bear was a formidable enough foe without the psychological advantage. It's no wonder we could never knock them off. But also, being raised on the right side of the Potomac, I also understand the VA/MD rivalry (and still find it amazing that I enjoyed The Wire so much and love Baker -man so much). A mix of making sure you were paying attention and beautiful Berkeley Springs > weird VA skinny trees + horrid NorVa traffic every single time. In your home state's defense I only ever spent time in the DC suburbs of Northern Virginia and driving by the shore on the way to NC. ============ *Dug out some of my old memorabilia late last night (including the MIP plaque!). That clarified a bunch of things. It's also going to lead to some edits since I got a few things wrong. Not trying to Fairy Tale you guys here. I take this stuff just as seriously as old school pro wrestling, which everybody knows is Serious Business. It's just that while I do have a great memory, this stuff happened over 30 years ago, and I'm bound to get a few things mixed up. Have things to do tonight and Thursday, but if I have time after edits I'll bust out a little quickie post covering my 4 most memorable teammates of this era. This post will end with a dark plot twist nobody is going to see coming.

Baker-man's last post has me wondering... And this is absolutely the wrong place to posit this question, but: How many of yinzs write and proofread/edit your posts "offline" beforehand? I feel like I might be better served to start that practice instead of just live-firing half-cocked.

Normal posts I don’t mind too much but fan fic I’d like no issues.
