Not sure what DC is thinking with this, Alex Smith is 34 and has maybe 2 good years in him left. Seems like it's delaying the inevitable. I think they've salvaged things fairly well considering their real mistake came by not identifying Cousins as an above average starter early enough and locking him down to a contract. They've lost a good, young defensive player because of it, but they could have very easily ended up with a far worse quarterback situation for next season.

Yeah given their other options were paying Cousins 30+ per season, hoping for a lucky break in the draft, or trying to get a middling guy like Case Keenum or Sam Bradford, I though DC did the best thing. I would guess they will be able to get out of Alex’s deal in two years and no harm done.
I’m happy to get a young guy who had a great season as a slot corner, we need as many of those guys as we can get.
Now will come the sad moves in KC of clearing about 15 million more in cap room by cutting Tamba and Derrick Johnson.

A huge L for the Colts. Amusing on one hand, but pretty classless by McDaniels to have strung them along for this whole time only to back out at the last minute after they've announced him.
McDaniels must surely have been promised the Pats HC job when Belichick retires?

Jimmy G's getting paid. The 49ers are about to make him the highest paid player in the history of the NFL.
It's gonna be a five year contract worth $137.5 million, or $27.5 million per year. By comparison, his mentor Tom Brady, is making about half of what Jimmy's gonna get paid ($14 million).

I know he won 5 games out of 6, but those last 2 games were throw away games since the Rams and Jags were already in the playoffs.

Brady’s contract averaged out to 20.5 million per and he signed it when he was 40. Weird to compare one’s total salary to the others base salary.
Brady does this to get paid.

I really don't get why we have to go through this every time a new QB signs the biggest contract. Cousins will break this, and then Rodgers will break it again.
Garoppolo takes up less percentage of the 49ers salary cap than Matt Ryan did when he signed his contract back in 2013.

I was going to post it but could only find a censored version to embed and I ain't about that PG life. Wasn't it amazing? Took me back to when Bart Scott called out the ESPN crew after the Jets beat the Pats in 2011. THEY CAN'T STOP A NOSEBLEED!

The contracts have to be put in some perspective but it really only matters how Jimmy performs moving forward. If he's a franchise saving Top 8 quarterback than it doesn't matter how much you pay him.
If he's not and turns out to just be decent or not a disaster than that'll suck for the 49ers.
Still ain't worse than the Flacco contract , which is the worst QB contract I can remember.

The cards really aren't falling the Giants way in their search for an OC. First the Vikings block them from interviewing Stefanski (who they chose DeFilippo over) and now Frank Reich getting the Colts HC job probably means the Eagles will block Duce Staley from leaving.
I think the NFL rules that allow this because QB coach to OC is seen a lateral move rather than a promotion are silly.

Seriously though , it seems there is a lack of great coaching candidate this offseason. Or all the good ones just got snatched up right away - I felt so bad for the Colts.

Frank Reich taking the Colts job is interesting little backstory for Colts vs Texans games twice a year, hard to forget that name for any Houston football fans over the age of 30 or so.

profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/02/19/report-jets-will-pay-whatever-it-takes-to-get-kirk-cousins/That's how I feel! I KNEW the Jets are going to go all in for this alright quarterback and treat him like he's Peyton Manning as far as importance goes. Please John Elway, Browns, save the Jets from the mistake they are about to make. Please god have mercy on me. I've suffered with Brett Favre, Mike Vick, and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Can I please god get a QB developed and drafted by the Jets to succeed? I don't ask for much really I don't. Please not Kirk Cousins. God no. Please let Rich Cimini be wrong again on the matter but I don't think he is. It makes too much sense. Fuck me.

Mildly surprised to hear the Chiefs trading Marcus Peters, but less so after learning the team was concerned he wanted a big paycheck and thought he might miss training camp to get it. He fell to us because of his misbehavior and problems with coaching in college and now he moves along for the same reason. I’ll miss his ability to make the big play, I won’t miss feeling like I need to defend him every time he gets torched on a double move.
Anxiously awaiting the compensation news.
Several people in KC suggesting racism at play and I don’t think they’re necessarily wrong. The reaction to Peters throwing a flag in the stands and Kelce throwing one into a refs face were not equal from KC fan base. I’m hoping it has more to do with his trade value as one of the best ten corners in the league though.

Big fan of the new trade trend in the NFL. The Eagles and Patriots success as two of the most aggressive trading teams (and the high salary cap) should continue to make things more exciting.
I think the Peters deal made good sense for both sides. The Rams needed a #1 corner with Johnson and Joyner impending free agents, and they didn't have to give up too much due to the character concerns. Peters fits nicely with Wade Phillips defensive scheme, and Phillips has already shown he has the ability to coach questionable corners to their max talent with Aqib Talib. Meanwhile the Chiefs get rid of a headache as they continue their semi-rebuild, and managed to at least get a couple of picks back for a guy that apparently no other team in the league wanted.

Pretty low return on a top level corner when you figure just letting him go gets you a compensatory pick. I guess we will have to wait and see on his money demands.

I think the fact that the Browns and Colts, with Dorsey and Ballard, the guys who drafted Peters, decided not to make an offer despite having plenty of ammo is very telling about how he is viewed.

Yeah I think it’s the next contract that’s the problem. At 1.3 million he’s a great headache to have. At 15 he’s a lot of trouble.

Anyone know what Vontae Davis is like? I'm not familiar with him but Bills fans seem psyched about him signing.
Chris Ivory met with the Bills but I'm looking at his numbers and I'm not impressed. 1,000 yds and 7 TDs in 2015 but done fuck all since then. We've got McCoy for another couple years too, so I don't really care about that.

The Rams are not fucking around getting players in and shipping out those who don't fit in Wade Phillips' defence. Traded for Aqib Talib and signed Sam Shields to go along with the already acquired Marcus Peters in a new look secondary, and dealt away Robert Quinn to Miami and Alec Ogletree to the Giants.

I'm disappointed that the Texans didn't try to go after one of those guys. I was hoping we could get Earl Thomas but he's staying put, maybe we can get Richard Sherman but I don't know where he's at right now if he's as good as he was a few years ago. Either way the Texans need major help in the defensive secondary and offensive line or else it's going to be another 4-12 year next year with or without Watson/Mercilus/Watt.

The Browns are loading up for another lackluster year by acquiring Jarvis Landry from the Dolphins, and Tyrod Taylor from the Bills.
Those moves alone should give the Browns at least a win next year.

So far the team looks better then last year. I was hoping that the Panthers would go after Jarvis Landry.
