Wow and now it sounds like Matthew Tkachuk is on his way out of Calgary too, possibly heading to St Louis. Brutal offseason for Flames fans. If he signs long-term in St Louis I have to think that Brady will eventually join him too. I know he's signed long-term in Ottawa but I wouldn't be surprised if he waives his NMC in a few years or requests a trade. Both Tkachuk's on the team their dad was best known for? Pffff Blues will win another Cup before 2030 for sure. How bad must it be in Calgary for both these guys to want out? What the fuck is going on over there? Unreal.

Looks like Brandon Coe is rising the Sharks system pretty fast. I look forward to seeing if he's added to the line-up at some point over the next 1-3 years. I don't understand trying up so much term into Erik Karlsson. San Jose isn't close to contention at all.

Holy FUCK
Matthew Tkachuk to Florida.
Calgary gets Jonathan Huberdeau, Mackenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt and a conditional 1st in 2025.
Unreal. Flames actually got a haul for a guy that wanted to leave. Even if they don’t sign both Huberdeau and Weegar they have them for all of next season. This is crazy.

Flames get a huge haul and a guaranteed strong season…but if neither of them re-sign…

Had stuff going on. My thoughts are that Florida knew that they couldn't resign both, combined with not wanting to necessarily resign Huberdeau after next season for his 30+ year old last contract. Those have historically been the terrible league contracts. It's possible that internally the Panthers had already decided to move on from Huberdeau. So the way they looked at it, it was Weegar, the protected first, and the prospect and 1 year of Huberdeau for 8 years of prime Tkachuk. Personally, I believe that last year was an outlier season for Tkachuk and he probably falls into the 75-85 point range. Still, point per game players who have those intangibles are in high demand. Flames can decide to either compete, and use Huberdeau and Weegar, or once they get close to the trade deadline and realize they don't have a chance at a cup can trade both those guys as rentals and make it out with a TON of futures, and reset their team. Anyways, not looking forward to the Jets season bringing back the exact same roster (minus Copp and Stastny) thinking that we're going to be a legitimate contender. Trade Dubois. Trade Wheeler. Trade Scheif. Trade Hellebuyck. I'm ready to move on from these guys for a few years of pain in order to get futures and start up again with Ehlers, Connor, Morrissey, and Pionk as the vets.

Even if Florida could not sign Huberdeau, they gave up too much. I agree Tkachuk had an outlier season. He was 8th in scoring with 104 points. During the regular season Calgary impressed me the most out of any team, Carolina a close number two. Calgary played so well together as a unit. Was the 104 point because of that plus Gaudreau's 115 point season? It can also be argued that Florida has tons of talent and a Tkachuk 100 point season can be replicated easily. However, at the same time Tkachuk never had a season like last year as well as he has never played a full 82 games until last season. Also, with his playing style, a lot of time in the penalty box instead of on the ice, and a higher probability of injuries/breaking down earlier than other players. Other side of the coin is that he is only 24 years old. Either way Florida traded Huberdeau who not only had more points than Tkachuk, but was tied for 2nd in scoring with Gaudreau. Weeger, can easily be placed in the top 2 pairing, a solid prospect, and yeah a first round pick. Florida does not have a 1st round pick until 2026. Like you said, Calgary has the opportunity to ride this team out or send "the letter" to their fan base, and have an unbelievable jump start on rebuilding their team. Although Calgary still has roster moves to make and has good cap space I think rebuilding is their best option. This is a trade Calgary should accept whether Tkachuk wanted to leave or not. That is how one sided this trade was.

While Tkachuk’s numbers were a bit padded with how good Calgary played last year, I don’t see them dropping off much. He’ll still be getting top line minutes with excellent players in Barkov and Reinhart.
That being said I also agree they gave up too much. Florida has no firsts in the next 3 drafts. The Bobrovsky contract is killing them and they can’t move it now unless they find a really stupid GM who doesn’t want a 1st + player for taking it off their hands. They are $3.5 mil over the cap and still have to move someone. Spencer Knight needs a new contract this year.
Florida didn’t make their team any better with this trade. I’m curious what their next move is because they still have work to do before the season starts.

Rangers got Kakko's bridge deal done at a very reasonable 2.1 AAV which means the possibility of bringing back Tyler Motte is still alive. Think it would be a pretty perfect offseason for Drury if he can get that final piece.

Fun little game I stole from reddit: your birth year starting line up.
Pick a starting line up that is made up of players drafted in your birth year. I already did mine so I’ll post the example. Warning: it’s tough to beat. Was a good year.
1984
Centre: Mario Lemieux
Right Wing: Brett Hull
Left Wing: Luc Robitaille
Defence: Al Iafrate
Defence: Gary Suter
Goaltender: Patrick Roy
What’s yours?

1990 C: Keith Tkachuk RW: Jaromir Jagr LW: Slava Koslov D: Sergei Zubov D: Darryl Sydor G: Martin Brodeur
I only superficially know the players from this era but it seems pretty clear cut apart from left wing where there are a couple of options. But I played as Koslov on NHL 99 as part of that great Detroit team so I'm partial to him.

I'm old, but I'll play. A few creative liberties:
C: Dale Hawerchuk LW: Ron Francis RW: Bobby Carpenter D: Al MacInnis D: Chris Chelios G: Grant Fuhr
Oh well. Five hall of famers...and someone else. Carpenter did score 50 goals one year though...

Pretty substantial news in the East today - Pacioretty tore his Achilles and will be out until at least midseason for Carolina, and the Islanders have apparently (finally) come to terms with Kadri.
Definitely feels like a 5 good teams into 4 playoff spots situation for the Metro next season.

Definitely feels like a 5 good teams into 4 playoff spots situation for the Metro next season. While it is probably happening, be careful about the Kadri news. The only person reporting it is a done deal is Pagnotta and he’s notorious for making shit up. Seravalli reported that the Islanders offered 7x7 and Pagnotta jumped in and said it’s a done deal “minus paperwork.” That being said, Lou loves Kadri and this is probably the best offer he’s going to get unless the Avalanche shed salary and make him an offer, which probably won’t happen. Kadri is 31 coming off an outlier season. Most teams won’t want to give him term because that contract is going to suuuuck in 2-3 years. Also kinda weird that the Isles would spend $7 mil signing a 2C when Barzal needs a new contract too and this would put them less than $4 mil under the cap. Guess the Isles plan on winning it all this year?

Monahan to Montreal and Flames used the extra cap space to sign Kadri for 7x7
Such a piss off. Dude turned down a trade to the Flames that would have got the Leafs TJ Brodie sooner, but instead he goes to Colorado, wins a Cup, and we had to endure fucking Tyson Barrie have the worst year of his career. Now Kadri is a Flame anyway.

I wouldn't want to be an Islander fan right now. Conversely, Calgary has really made a silk purse out of a sow's ear situation. 7x7 makes Trocheck's contract look a lot better in comparison.
I love how unpredictable NHL free agency seems to be. In the NFL once a player is linked to a team they are almost 95% going to sign there. In the NHL you hear next to nothing, and what little you do hear is wrong.

In the NHL you hear next to nothing, and what little you do hear is wrong. The only people worth following for NHL rumours and news are Chris Johnston and Elliott Friedman. They seem to be the only ones that hear stuff that ends up being true. Pierre LeBrun is also good although he doesn’t seem to get many scoops these days. Darren Dreger gets the odd one but he’s a douche and always posts rumours that help clients of a certain agent, so much to the point that fans are convinced said agent is slipping Dreger a percentage. The Islanders need to fire Lou at this point don’t they? How do you go from “Kadri will be an Islander by the end of the day,” to zero news and then he signs in Calgary a week later? And there are no free agents left to sign that will help the Isles in any way. They missed the boat and are now worse off than last year. It’ll be a miracle if they make the playoffs in a stacked conference.

The game passed Lou by and Toronto was smart enough to know that and give the reigns to Dubas.
The overall consensus in Jetsland is that our GM spent the whole summer at his cottage in Ontario. We're running back the same garbage team from last year except minus Copp and minus Stastny. We have no space for our young dmen who are too good for AHL and seem to be committed to using a 6"7 pylon that we wanted a first round pick on.
Zero confidence now. Waiting for Dubois to be traded. Waiting to blow up the team but still have Ehlers and Conner to cheer for. Bah

The Athletic put out their top 100 NHL players under 23 today:
1. Jack Hughes 2. Moritz Seider 3. Trevor Zegras 4. Quinn Hughes 5. Brady Tkachuk 6. Andrei Svechnikov 7. Rasmus Dahlin 8. Tim Stuzle 9. Lucas Raymond 10. Alexis Lafreniere
Of the players I know more about, I think Noah Dobson (31) and K'Andre Miller (43) are underrated.

I didn't expect there to be a savage Leafs burn in The Handmaid's Tale of all place RT but it got a chuckle out of me. Rangers finally moved Nils Lundqvist. Think Drury did very well to get a first round in return from Dallas, I would have thought his value had fallen more than that. Between this and Georgiev he's proved quite good at rescuing value from a depreciating asset.

Rangers accounted for the Islanders pretty easily in their preseason opener, they looked impressive from the highlights. Miller was especially active, I really think he's going to take a leap this season and become a top pair level guy.
