Had an hour or so to spare today so thought I'd watch some NJPW. I really enjoyed this tag match, although not as much as others seem to have. I think they told a really good story, and I really enjoyed The Young Bucks' selling. The commentary was pretty bad, there were a few awkward moments and it was too long for my taste - but still really good. Kayfabe wise I didn't see a good reason to have it go beyond the normal 30 minute time limit and that kinda made it clear what sort of match it was going to be. Kenny is still a little too cartoony for my liking and I find that takes me out of the match at important moments, such as the OWA attempt towards the end, but I'm nit-picking.

Last night's tag team match was something I've been waiting 10 years to watch but didn't even know it. That was truly something special.
I'm also throwing Jay White vs. Hangman Page on there to finally round out my top ten. That match didn't have any business being as good as it was, and they both delivered. I really enjoyed that fight.

Apologies for spamming the thread today, but following Emperor,'s praise in the NJPW thread I kept going and watch some of the New Japan cup which adds another two t my list. 1. Andrade Cien Almas vs. Johnny Gargano - NXT Championship - Takeover Philadelphia - ***** 2. Kenny Omega vs. Chris Jericho - IWGP US Championship - Wrestle Kingdom 12 - ****3/4 3. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Zack Sabre Jr. - New Japan Cup Finals - ****3/44. The Young Bucks vs. The Golden Lovers - Strong Style Evolved - ****1/2 5. Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Kota Ibushi - New Japan Cup Quarter Finals - ****1/26. Kazuchika Okada vs. Tetsuya Naito - IWGP Heavyweight Championship - Wrestle Kingdom 12 - ****1/4 7. Andrade Cien Almas vs. Johnny Gargano - NXT Championship - NXT 2/21 - ****1/4 8. Women's Royal Rumble Match - ****1/4 9. Women's Elimination Chamber - ****1/4 10. Ember Moon vs. Shayna Baszler - NXT Women's Championship - Takeover Philadelphia - **** 1/4 11. John Cena vs. AJ Styles - Smackdown Live! 2/27 - **** 12. Adam Cole vs. Aleister Black - Takeover Philadelphia - **** What I loved was just how amazing ZSJ looked. The story of him wrestling smarter than everyone else in the tournament just worked so well at building expectation as it went on. The Ibushi match was great fun because Sabre just woudn't let Ibushi do what he normally does. And I totally get how some people wouldn't be into Sabre's style, it definitely isn't for everyone, but the way he refuses to compromise and sticks to being the smartest person in the ring no matter his opponent just really works for me. And this is coming from some one who has taken a long time to warm to Sabre, especially because of his build. And then the Tanahashi match was even better. I've been kinda bored of Tanahashi lately. The White match was obviously disappointing and the much hyped Tanahashi/Suzuki match did very little for me, but this one felt like watching the main event Tanahashi I know and love again. I loved how 2/3 of the way in he was able to break Sabre out of his dominating routine and Sabre then had to catch up with him and wear him back down. Loved it. I didn't have the emotional attachment that I had with Gargano/Almas or Omega/Jericho, but it's going to be up with the best of them come end year lists for sure.

NJPW Sakura Genesis Will Ospreay vs Marty Scurll ****1/4 Kazuchida Okada vs Zack Sabre Jr. ****
Both matches probably won't make a top 10 list by the year's end. Ospreay vs Scurll was a lesser version of their 2017 match (which I loved). Ospreay's hardway made the match a little better than it would have been otherwise.

Finally got around to watching the New Japan Cup final in preparation for last night's main event, and I'm kicking myself for not watching it sooner. What a match that was. It also made it that much sweeter when Tanahashi challenged Okada for what will probably be the final time last night.

Finally got around to checking out some more New Japan and that Young Bucks vs. Golden Lovers match was epic. I mean it's 40 or so minutes of quite literally non stop action. This match never hits a lull. Also a very underrated match it seems was Adam Paige vs. Jay White from that same show. Just two amazing matches back to back. I'm really digging New Japan.

Well surprise of the week for me is that if anyone is still sleeping on the 205 Live reinvigoration you need to wake up to it. There are still loads of problems, not least of which the crowds, but the matches are getting better and better and Murphy and Kalisto gave me my favourite so far. Murphy looks like a superstar in 205 Live and Kalisto is just so creative. The match was so smooth and just a really enjoyable back and forth pairing between two guys fairly equally booked. I think if there was better character development, build to the match and crowd response they could do something really special. The fact that they won the crowd over and got This Is Awesome, Fight Forever and 205 chants speaks volumes as to how good it was.
Also, this weeks was a good episode to watch if you want to catch up on 205 Live in general as far as getting a lay of the land. All of the main players were highlighted well I thought.

I'd add Gargano vs. Ciampa
North American ladder match
Black vs. Almas
All from Takeover New Orleans. Incredible show. Nothing from mania oddly enough was quite match of the year worthy to me.

Yeah Roman vs. Brock seems like a love it or hate it, I hated it but I get it from a finisher frenzy stand point of why somebody might enjoy it and clearly System did...I'm more perplexed by his love of the lackluster Orton vs. Roode at fastlane than I am Brock vs. Roman.

Six New Entries!
***** Gargano vs. Ciampa was perfect for me. I don't think it's as good a match as Almas/Gargano, but given the backstory and especially the crowd, it felt like there was nothing they could have done better, which means ***** for me. From Ciampa not having entrance music through to Gargano not wanting to hurt his best friend - everything they did was for a reason. It was bitter, it was intense and it had me captivated from start to finish. I could understand someone not agreeing with my rating, but it reflects how invested I was going into the match, how absorbed I was in the action and how satisfied I was at the conclusion.
****1/2
North American Ladder Match - I see lots of people giving this five stars as well and I understand why. Meltzer called it the best multi-man ladder match of all time, which would suggest he'll be going at least 4.75 if not 5. For me it was as good as a multi-man ladder match could be. We saw some really innovative stuff, everyone got a chance to shine and the right person one. I even loved the botch at the end with the ladder buckling under the weight of Ricochet and Lars - I thought that really added to the drama and made it look real. For me multi-men ladder matches like this are always going to have annoying moments in them of people staying down for too long because it isn't their turn. That's always going to prevent me from going higher than this - but it was damn good.
****1/4
Black/Almas - I really enjoyed this as well and maybe am underrating it slightly. I loved how Almas wasn't tranquillo and Black wasn't stoic. They were both heated and desperate to win from the off. I'm a big fan of Selina Vega and while some people thought she interfered too many times, how it played into the finish made it very meaningful and impactful and I appreciated that. Almas is a superstar and I really hope they don't call him up until they have a solid plan of what they're going to do with him on the main roster because they really shouldn't waste him.
Asuka/Charlotte - 4/5 minutes and I think this could be considerably higher. They were both really up for it and fought not for spectacle's sake but to win. Charlotte's character work was great here and her being presented as the superstar she is was so refreshing. I liked the finish, Charlotte bleeding and crying knowing that this was her last chance at winning made it seem legit. Again, if this happened just five minutes later, it would have felt even more impactful to me. But comfortably the best women's match in Wrestlemania history.
Rousey/Angle vs. Steph/HHH - well this is a shocker. At first I was angry at them for going long, but as they kept going they kept producing the goods. Just the perfect way to book this match. Ronda looks like an absolute superstar comign out of this and I was most entertained all night during this match. Just wonderful fun pro-wrestling.
**** Styles/Nakamura - decent part one. Which is what I said about their Wrestle Kingdom match if I remember correctly, I don't think it's as great as people remember either. That being said, it felt important, the strike felt real, the ending was a shocker and the turn after the match solidified it as a Wrestlemania moment. Really good match that whets the appetite for me.
So all in all a good weekend for WWE. Biggest disappointment was Reigns/Lesnar. Pure garbage when they could've stolen the show. Had their match from 31 been in its place this could've been up there with X7 - instead a disappointing main event will always taint a great show.

-----
Andrade Cien Almas vs Alesteir Black - ****1/2 Nice to see a different side of both wrestlers. I'm marking it down for one too many Zelina Vega interferences. At some point the ref has to take a stand or it's just a handicap match. Of course the finish played into that, but it didn't fully compensate. Also, I felt Almas and Black struggled to generate any real drama without Vega.
Gargano vs Ciampa is worth mentioning, but I struggle to rate it. It's clear they got the tone of the match absolutely right. It was suitably brutal and Gargano and Ciampa played their roles to a tee. Despite all of those things, I wasn't really into the match for the most part.
Ronda Rousey and Kurt Angle vs Triple H and Stephanie McMahon - ****1/4
Could have done with a bit of tightening up. The Kurt Angle and Triple H segments were lacklustre. Necessary to join the dots, but the action itself was completely inconsequential. Same for basically anything involving Kurt Angle. Everything else was pretty much perfect.

It's even crazier when you look at how few WWE matches ever got the five star award. Gargano has TWO! Then again does the unsanctioned count? Officially it never took place...

FINALLY got around to watching Takeover. I still haven't watched Supercard of Honor but I doubt any of those matches will crack my top ten.
1. Kenny Omega vs. Chris Jericho - Wrestle Kingdom 12 2. North American Championship Ladder Match - NXT Takeover: New Orleans 3. The Golden*Lovers vs. The Young Bucks - Strong Style Evolved 4. Johnny Gargano vs. Tommaso Ciampa - NXT Takeover: New Orleans 5. Adam Cole vs. Aleister Black - NXT Takeover: Philadelphia 6. Kazuchika Okada vs. Tetsuya Naito - Wrestle Kingdom 12 7. Andrade Cien Almas vs. Johnny Gargano - NXT Takeover: Philadelphia 8. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Zack Sabre, Jr. - New Japan Cup finals 9. Will Ospreay vs. Marty Scurll - NJPW Sakura Genesis 10. Kazuchika Okada vs. Zack Sabre, Jr. - NJPW Sakura Genesis
Had to do some rearraging. As much as I personally enjoyed Rusev vs. Shinsuke at Fastlane, it doesn't make sense having that match on my list and knocking off Okada vs. ZSJ. Upon reflection I enjoyed that match much more. Same with Scurll/Ospreay.
The NA title Ladder Match is officially the best ladder match I've ever seen, and I think I enjoyed it more than the TLC matches back in the day (and I fucking LOVED those matches). I loved everything about it and had my current favourite and my all-time favourite not fought each other in January, it would easily be my #1 right now.
And like I need to add anything about Gargano/Ciampa. That was a work of art.

How you could rank it higher than the NA Ladder match, or anything from PB list, I don't know. Cool. I had a difficult time working out where to put the ladder match because while it was obviously spectacular - it's difficult to compare against singles matches which I always prefer in terms of storytelling and emotional investment. I don't think there's anything wrong with saying that this week's match was the best on 205 since the title tournament.
