I'm under the impression that all the HOW regulars are big Bret Hart fans and I'm pretty sure he won a GOAT poll back in the day. So I'm curious to see where everybody leans and whether there are any HBK marks out there, or if you've flip flopped between the two?

I definitely started off as a Shawn Michaels fan. I was introduced to Bret via WCW where he just came off as this aloof mid-carder who kept whinging about being screwed (which sounded worse because they'd constantly bleep out screwed). Outside of the Benoit match, Bret never really came off as a great wrestler and just seemed to be this stick in the mud. Whereas Shawn had a mystique to him when I first started watching. He'd pop up every now and then when the WWF felt they needed to get some value out of their near seven-figure investment and he'd never stick around long enough to get tired. I thought he had a cool surprisingly deep voice and he had this great reputation. When he returned in 2002 that reputation was validated right away after he stole the show at SummerSlam 2002 and I bought into his shtick all the way till his retirement.
I didn't really begin to appreciate Bret until I learned about his accomplishments in the WWF. That started the wheels turning and by I got my hands on his 2005 release I really began to make that switch. I still enjoyed Shawn's matches from an entertainment big budget action movie way - but I could appreciate Bret's on a deeper level. I found myself believing and respecting Bret more, Shawn's attention seeking style made me less sympathetic towards him.
I believe both at their best are amazing performers, but I get much better appreciation of Pro Wrestling watching Bret.

When I started watching wrestling, both of them were already retired. All I knew about them for a couple of years was what I read about them in magazines.
I wasn't interested in either of them for a long time. Bret Hart just seemed like a boring old dude and Shawn seemed kinda obnoxious (this is probably accurate).
Shawn came back in 2002 and I didn't care. I didn't know his backstory with HHH so I wasn't interested in them fighting (and I was totally disinterested in HHH anyway). Seeing some dude who was obviously about 40 strutting around with his t-shirt tucked in his jeans with "Sexy Boy" music was just super cringe. He was like the sad old guy at the bar at student night. Why would I want to support this old man when there are guys like Jericho, RVD and Jeff Hardy instead?
The cringe got even worse with DX 2006. Watching these two men (who I was never interested in anyway) acting like kids was just embarrassing. So so uncool.
Something must have changed in my mind by 2009, because I absolutely LOVED that version of DX. Glow sticks, Hornswoggle, everything. It was crap, but I think they knew it was crap. There was an air of "We're too old for this shit" about it and that made it ironically funny for me.
Anyway, some time around 2005, I realised Shawn was actually really really good. He was still extremely uncool, but that didn't really matter - I don't remember ever seeing a bad match from him and his dorkiness was kinda endearing. It was probably the feud with Angle that really did it for me. I know the Mania match gets all the hype, but it was the Vengeance rematch that blew me away.
I've seem some Bret matches on DVDs (I think it's best to ignore his WWE return matches). He was definitely good, but way behind Shawn for me. The Bret/Austin stuff was absolutely fantastic and I wish I could have been watching it as it happened.

Getting to live through both guys rising up as tag team guys in real time to the epic showdown at Mania XII was a trip. I liked both guys a lot through all of that but Bret was my team that I rooted for. I still think their match at Mania XII was one of the best built matches WWF ever did and I've always liked the match(I know it's not popular here). It's really a shame they couldn't have gotten along and just went all out in the ring together those years in 96-97, they could have been killing it the whole time.

It's really a shame they couldn't have gotten along and just went all out in the ring together those years in 96-97, they could have been killing it the whole time. This feels most aligned to my take as well. My head wants to say I was, am, and always will be Team Bret —at least by some slim margin— but Shawn just has so many instant favorite matches that had so much more of an emotional and entertaining element to them. I can readily rattle off Shawn vs. Double J at IYH2, Shawn vs. Triple H at SummerSlam 2002, Shawn vs. Flair at WrestleMania 24, and Shawn vs. Taker at WrestleMania 25 as favorites that packed such a heavy real time punch that they have and will stay with me forever. While Bret has 1-2-3 Kid, Owen, the two Austin matches, Piper, Bulldog, and the two Perfect matches... None of them have ever packed that same heft despite feeling, seeming, being objectively better as fake sporting contests. And either because of my lapsed fanhood or the overall quality of the contemporary product or dirt sheet rumors, I've soured unfairly on Shawn because of his second run post-WMXX. So I still really don't tend to give him his fair due as far as my own personal fandom goes. For someone who isn't really concerned about drawing ability when it comes to my own personal tastes, Bret & Shawn probably objectively really should end up way closer to being the same ranking but just like an "a" & "b" separation for me.

The way the WWF switched gears around Survivor Series '95 on was so sweet. Xanta Claus, Bulldog/Bret II, RAW Bowl, Vader, Owen/Shawn, Stone Cold Diesel, Goldust, Warrior etc.
Bret/Shawn isn't the best match to give your full attention to, but it's like putting on an old Grand Final/Superbowl in the background. It reminds me of the classic great offence vs. great defence final, where it turns into a defensive match and yet Team A still holds their own. I liked how they incorporated a controversial referee call in there as well to give Bret a classic out. It's such a shame their return match could never take place naturally because the build between the two was perfect. They changed the business going after one another in '97.

I always like telling my history with Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels. Something I will always hold proud as a fan being an early booster of both these guys and pegging them for future stardom. Little did I know... Being a relative old timer when it comes to watching wrestling (me and bodyslam may be the only ones here who started with the Territories) of course I started out as a Bret Hart fan. He was even pretty well rounded back in those days whether it was technical duels with Dynamite Kid or intense brawls with Bad News Allen. He was just exciting to watch in the ring even though his promos left a lot to be desired. Once he got to the WWF (which coincided with me getting WWF TV for the first time) I lost interest real quick being used as just a job guy. Also the larger than life characters Vince presented made me stray from the "good wrestler guys." I was also still young enough back then to be predisposed to hate all the bad guys so once the Hart Foundation formed he was never a favorite. He kind of got lost even further in the shuffle with the charismatic personalities of Jim Neidhart and Jimmy Hart around him. Not long after the Hart Foundation hit their stride as a heel team the Rockers burst on the scene. They immediately became favorites with their high flying and synchronized double teams. I had a special affinity for the blonde guy in the group who seemed to have a little extra of that oft mentioned "it" factor, of course Shawn Michaels. Marty was fine in the ring but Shawn just had that aura around him and just months into their run I was pining for Shawn to go solo. At Wrestlemania IV Bret turned face after being attacked by Bad News Brown and this was pretty important since Neidhart wasn't involved so Bret could finally get some shine on his own. Bret suddenly became another youthful and exciting future singles star in my eyes and it was at this point that my mind went to the then "deep cut" dream match of Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels. Once it happened on Wrestling Challenge in early 1990 I was over the moon. It was a fun match that left me wanting more. Shawn's heel turn was well received and I remained a fan until my WWF fandom stopped for awhile in late 1994. My viewing was spotty for the next 2 and a half years but Shawn became more annoying from what little I saw and Vince's commentary when Shawn was on just seemed a bit creepy. I did catch some of the Iron Man build and I agree with Bret that they made him out to be the old broken down warhorse while Shawn had the spring in his step. I didn't see the match until years later and frankly I don't think it deserves the crap it gets, I was compelled to the end. 1997 rolls around and Shawn loses his smile which was when I got back on board with the WWF again. Bret showing more heel tendencies also got me interested and it blossomed into that wonderful Hart Foundation vs. US feud. This is when I firmly switched to being a Bret only guy. As the story with many Canadian fans go Bret was the hero and Shawn was the bitch that helped drive Bret out so I had no use for Shawn for a good 5 years. I also stayed true to the pattern of liking Shawn's apparent turnaround when he came back in 2002 and loved most everything he did besides the DX revival of 2006. In the end I went full circle to being fans of both like it was some 34 years ago now, sheesh. Bret though was still the pro's pro in everything he did so he gets the nod.

Some great posts in this thread. Shout out to Big Pete for the Xanta Klaus shout out. I'm a Bret > Shawn guy because the glory days of 95-97 will never die for me. But I did grow to respect Shawn over time. Going Shootist style without his foresight to be a Bret & Shawn guy before it was cool... 87-91: Bret/Hart Foundation gets slight edge over Shawn/Rockers just because the Harts were technically my first favorite wrestlers largely because they were in the first title change I ever saw. Turned on them when they turned on Jimmy Hart. But you'd have to wait until 2005 before I ever rooted for the Rockers in real time. They were just a boring midcard babyface team somewhere between the Killer Bees (since they didn't even have the masked gimmick to give them a hook) and Young Stallions. I did not care about rock music. I did not care about the Rockers. Told the story before of how it took me literal years to learn Shawn=blonde and Marty=brunette. Couldn't even be bothered to tell them apart. 92-Spring 95: Shawn. He came into his own as a pretty boy midcard heel. It wasn't a right away thing after turning on Marty, but he slowly won me over with the "Shawn Michaels has left the building" schtick and being a decent enough IC Champ. He was never a top tier Baker Guy, but did grow into a perfectly cromulent B tier Baker Guy....a modern Model Martel. Meanwhile, Bret was a boring midcard world champ with none of Hogan's pizzazz or credibility who grew into a boring credible world champ feuding with more interesting cats like Lawler, Owen & Backlund. April 95-November 95: 2/10 Bret over 1/10 Shawn. They could both go kick rocks as far as I was concerned, but Shawn could kick more rocks than Bret. He was just so incredibly obnoxious. November 95-Survivor Series 2003: Bret all the way. Shawn was the worst thing this side of Hulk Hogan from 95 on while Bret started a slow burn climb going into the Diesel match which culminated with him becoming my latest wrestling hero in 1997. I was gutted when the Montreal Screwjob went down. After that it would be impossible for me to ever rate Shawn over Bret. This is also the first time I cared about in ring work. They were both great. The two best in WWF history imo. But even in ring I preferred Bret to Shawn. Survivor Series 2003-Present: I was still Team Bret, but Shawn did what I assumed was impossible by getting me to like him again. Survivor Series 2003. Shawn was just too good to hate anymore. Plus it seemed like he finally grew up and left his dickishness back in the 90s. This is while I will always prefer Shawn Michaels 2.0 to Shawn Michaels 1.0. Only shenanigans he pulled were against Hogan and that was actually funny and good because it was on Hogan. I won't say I ever preferred Shawn to Bret overall. That would be impossible. BUT by 2005 I thought Shawn had surpassed Bret as the best in ring performer in WWE history when it came to sheer volume of great matches. And mellow middle aged Shawn was a much more tolerable human being than bitter Bret ranting and raving about the Montreal Screwjob for the 3000th time. It's not even that he was wrong, but more a case of "Good grief! It was x amount of years ago. Give it a rest, dude. Move on."

Was looking to come up with a Big Pete style Top 10 for both guys going off lists I made around 2009 and realized such gems as HBK/JJ, Bret/Piper, and Bret/Diesel (just to name a few) wouldn't make the cut. Those guys were good!

Or so I presume? Let me think in tandem...

Now I gotta know Baker -man's Top 10 Best & Favorite Bret/Shawn matches. Granted this was from 2008ish when I had watched most of these matches in recent memory. Feel like it would change a lot nowadays... *Decided to go 20 rather than 10 on Bret because every "next match" ruled lol. Just be glad I stopped at 20! And of course it's only fair to do the same for HBK. Bret1. Canadian Stampede 10 Man Tag (decided to include it since Bret was one of the 3 major players) 2. vs. Austin- Wrestlemania 13 3. vs. Owen- Wrestlemania 10 4. vs. Benoit- WCW Nitro 10/99 5. vs. Bulldog- Summerslam 92 6. vs. Austin- Survivor Series 96 7. vs. Bulldog- IYH December 95 8. vs. Perfect- KOTR 93 9. vs. Perfect- Summerslam 91 10. vs. Owen- Summerslam 94 11. vs. Kid- Raw 7/94 12. vs. Diesel- Survivor Series 95 13. vs. Piper- Wrestlemania 8 14. vs. Austin vs. Undertaker vs. Vader- IYH February 97 15. vs. Flair- 10/12/92 (Bret wins WWF title) 16. vs. Mr. Backlund- Superstars 7/94 (Backlund snaps) 17. vs. Mr. Backlund- Survivor Series 94 18. vs. Jean Pierre Lafitte- IYH September 95 19. w/ Owen vs. Quebecers- Royal Rumble 94 20. vs. Doink & Jerry Lawler- Summerslam 93 Shawn 1. vs. Undertaker- IYH Badd Blood (Cell) 2. vs. Benoit vs. HHH- Wrestlemania 20 (not really a "Shawn" match tbh) 3. vs. Angle- Wrestlemania 21 4. vs. Mankind- IYH September 96 5. vs. Flair- Wrestlemania 24 (likely beneficiary of recency bias) 6. vs. HHH- Summerslam 2002 7. vs. Razor- Wrestlemania 10 8. vs. Diesel- IYH April 96 9. vs. Jericho- Wrestlemania 19 10. vs. Benoit vs. HHH- Backlash 2004 (much more of a "Shawn" match than the 'Mania bout) 11. vs. Razor- Summerslam 95 12. vs. Jarrett- IYH July 95 13. vs. Angle- Vengeance 2005 14. vs. HHH- Raw 12/03 15. vs. Bulldog- KOTR 96 16. w/ Marty vs. Orient Express- Royal Rumble 1991 17. w/ Austin vs. Owen & Bulldog- Raw 5/97 18. Upon further review I actually forgot a few Top 20 Bret & Shawn matches because I didn't look far enough back into the 80s when I posted yesterday. Bret/Savage from SNME along with Hart Foundation/Brainbusters and Rockers & Tito vs. Rougeaux & Martel both from Summerslam 89 made both guys Top 20 when I created my big @machomark esque matchlist back in 2008. Also shame on 2008 me for woefully underselling the awesome HBK/Orton hidden gem from Survivor Series 07. That one would skyrocket up the list if I were to do it all over again.
Checked to see if I forgot Bret/Hakushi from IYH since both you guys mentioned it and I did not. Had it a few spots outside Bret's Top 20.

Bret/Hakushi made such an impression on me because it was my first exposure to new style wrestling via Hakushi, whom also made an instant huge impact on me. Dude was my serious Tajiri years before I even knew who Tajiri was.

Since Shootist called me out I've been there from the beginning of Shawn's career. I remember him as a jobber in Houston Wrestling and World Class. In no time he was no longer a jobber but was in a tag team in what was left of SWCW then called Texas All-Star Wrestling. Next thing I new he was in the magazines as part of the Midnight Rockers in the AWA. Then on to the WWF and the rest is history. From their WWF runs I've always been team Bret and for the most part I still am.

At most I once pretended to respect it because I was supposed to. Out of those 43 Bret & Shawn matches not a single one has them as opponents. Ironman is a snoozer. Have never been overly crazy about their Survivor Series 92 match for reasons I forget. Montreal is the best one but I can't in good conscience rate it too high because WORST FINISH EVER. The one time I questioned my devotion to Team WWF. And I haven't seen the one semi-famous Hart Foundation/Rockers match.

I'm with the gang in dispreferring Survivor Series '92 to the Iron Man. MSJ with any other finish is probably their best match. I used to hate on the Iron Man, but surprisingly came around on it during my WrestleMania WatchThru project. It deserves at least 66.67% of it's hype and love. My favorite Bret vs. Shawn is their trial ladder match from pre-SummerSlam 1992.

He was still figuring out his singles formula so a large duration of the match is spent on the mat without either guy looking to put their opponent away. Shawn also makes the cardinal sin of going for a top rope nothing which is easily punished with a Sharpshooter for a finish. The top rope nothing is right up there with pointless dancing as a PW no-no.
Also Santa Claus comes out and completely over-shadows everything, a young John Rechner took notes and started residing in the South Pole.

Nope! Never liked it. Shawn just isn't a compelling opponent. Big Pete dropping subtle Xanta Claus references everywhere has to be my & Baker-man's latest favorite PW trend!

It all goes back to the most shocking moment in shoot interview history.
I fell off my chair when Bret admitted this 8 years ago.

I discovered I own not one, not two, not three, but FOUR Shawn DVDs (and a blu-ray about the Shawn/Bret rivalry). And I've never watched any of them.
It might be time for me to finally watch some pre-2002 HBK matches!

It might be time for me to finally watch some pre-2002 HBK matches! Post the covers. I owned the og comp they made of hbk before it was standard for all. Most of disc 1 was the iron man though...
