Shane was European champion in 99. After HHH turned on Pac in their title match to start his main event push Shane declared he retired as champion. I remember there being some weird backstage segment where Mideon saw the belt in Shane's bag and asked to have it since he doesn't have one. My quick wiki check confirms that's exactly what happened.

I assume the whole thing went down to squash the idea that they respected the belt in any way shape or form.

Honestly given the nature of the hardcore belt and certain internet championships it really coulda been anything I suppose. I do remember someone taking Jericho's belt though. Don't think possession 9ths of the law works in title lineage for the big gold belts though.

Along those same lines Hacksaw Jim Duggan found the TV Title in a trash can and just started defending it in dying day WCW.

Yeah Russo recycled the same creative only a few months later in WCW. Scott Hall beat Booker T for the title, and since he already won the US title from Bret in a 4-way ladder match he couldn't be bothered pulling double duty so he threw the TV title in the trash. I seem to recall Duggan calling himself the unofficial champion but only ever defending it on Saturday Night. Then the title was scrapped altogether when they did the reset. Not even Lance Storm when he was doing his belt collector gimmick cared to bring it back.
