Great group of games this week! I'll miss TNF tomorrow because of my work Christmas party, but it's a pretty important one in the context of the strong AFC East. Buffalo need to keep winning in order to fend off Miami and NYJ in the tight division race, while the Patriots can't afford another loss after dropping a winnable game on Thanksgiving. New England and Mac Jones had their most productive offensive effort of the season against the Vikings, but they have not fared well against Buffalo in recent games, the most recent being a 47-17 demolishing by the Bills in the Wildcard round.
Early on Sunday there are three particularly interesting games. The Jets travel to Minnesota where we will see if Mike White can prove that he's not a two-time one game wonder against the Vikings who have a chance to clinch the NFC North with a win and a Detroit loss to Jacksonville. The NFC East is the other division in the spotlight, with the Commies and Giants playing the first half of their series that is crucial for both team's playoff hopes, while Philadelphia will face a relatively tough test against the Titans with AJ Brown facing his former team.
In the late window there are a couple of great good on good matchups. Mike McDaniel will do battle with the man he worked under, Kyle Shanahan, as the red hot Dolphins travel to Santa Clara to face the 49ers. These two teams are riding some of the longest win streaks in the league (along with the Chiefs) and it will be a particularly intriguing battle between the Miami offence (averaging 34 ppg over the last month) go against the San Francisco defence who haven't allowed a single second half point over that span. We also have a rematch of last season's AFC Championship game with the Bengals hosting the Chiefs. As mentioned, Kansas City have just been taking care of business rolling off five straight wins behind Patrick Mahomes strengthening his MVP favouritism, while Cincinnati have been steadily improving throughout the season and are set to regain Ja'Marr Chase from his hip injury.
SNF doesn't appear to be the most exciting nightcap, it's hard to see the Colts causing the Cowboys too many problems given their largely inept performance on Monday night. Dallas are another team that appear to be peaking at the right moment, coming off consecutive strong performances, and they have good personnel news with Tyron Smith and James Washington soon to return...and possibly also Odell Beckham added to the mix?
Monday night rounds things out with action from the worst division in the NFL, but one that is still wide open for all four teams. Any idea that the Bucs had started to turn things around during their German sojourn were quickly expelled by their terrible loss to the Browns, they've just been an incohesive and disorganised operation from wire to wire. Recent poor performances by the Saints, including being shutout last week, would have typically have them erased from relevancy, but as their defence gets healthier and three in-division games remaining they are still in the hunt.
