(I don't want to make this thread Trans rights related or JK Rowling related but more so want to keep it gaming if possible because this is absolutely the talk of the town, especially with how well this game has reviewed out of the gates)

Seems like with the early release of Hogwarts Legacy, it's created somewhat of a gaming civil war with people being critical of anyone buying and/or streaming the game and feeling they are siding with JK Rowling & her views. I posted the video above because it happened yesterday, a semi-popular Youtube personality was getting harassed by her chat because they chose to stream Hogwarts Legacy despite saying they would donate money to a pro-trans charity since they got a review copy. I read another streamer got doxxed for streaming the game as well and there was even a website that was once up that allowed people to view who on their friends list has streamed Hogwarts Legacy and for how long.

This can be a discussion of the game itself but I find this really fascinating because despite this being a critically acclaimed game, how much does a streamer's morals and value get put on the line for streaming and/or not streaming this game? Do you think it's right to judge and hold it against a streamer for buying something like this and streaming it? 

How can you discuss the controversy over this game without mentioning JK & trans stuff?

I’m not even into Harry Potter and I’m tempted to buy this again after all the incessant bitching about it.

Streamers are just e-beggars so they don’t have morals to begin with anyway.

I find it funny that people fighting against JKR being toxic are being toxic to people who just want to play a game.  Was sick what they did to Girlfriend Reviews.  She came back later to play when they banned a ton of people from their chat.

Also that site above is being used to target people for hate raids.

For streamers being e-beggers, many outright say if you do not have cash do not donate, just watching is support enough. Some are whores, but they are the small minority. Most just like to play games and chat.

For this game, the main streamers I follow will not touch it as they predicted chat going toxic.  Two streamers I follow did play it and were having a blast doing so.  The trans streamers I follow are just not streaming this week at all out of fear of attacks.

Surprised some of you aren't picking up Tipster is doing the classic 'don't you boo me!' tactic. It's all about them views and engagement, of course putting themselves front row and centre is going to be good for business.

I personally think the controversy is stupid, her basic sentiment was (from what I've seen, I'm not deep diving shit, so she might have said more I've missed) "Nothing wrong with trans in any way shape or form, I just acknowledge a biological difference." I honestly think it's ridiculous that would be a contentious talking point. In any case, isn't NEAR the sort of thing I'd burn a person down for. I'm playing the shit out of that game.

I believe that's how it started, but then it became a whole thing where she liked anti-trans sentiments and made a few snippy remarks after the abuse she copped.

I don't know, I'm sure c or Blindy could expand on it.

I don't know the full deal with JK Rowling but she is public enemy #1 among some of my friends and some people are boycotting this game. Personally I think is kinda absurd to use a video game as a moral battleground.

She's already incredibly wealthy, not buying this game won't put a dent in her bank account. Contrary to what some might say, you are allowed to disagree with JK Rowling's views while at the same time enjoying the Harry Potter universe. Endorsing her fiction is not endorsing her personal life and opinions.

JKR is a TERF, which means trans-exclusionary radical feminist. They believe that trans woman are not woman and should not be in any female spaces. She believes instead of transition, people should undergo conversion therapy, a dangerous concept banned in many countries. And for a year she has been posting a ton of anti-trans and trans-hysteria shit.

People like her would prefer trans people go back in the closet or just kill themselves like they did in the past, rather than be able to be trans in public.

Her trans shit is not like a one off, 90% of her twitter is TERF stuff these days. She argues with trans celebrities or people who support trans right. She reposts transphobes. Like she is the center of twitter's trans hate bubble.

OK, what examples are there of her being a TERF? Is it just liking posts or is it taking offence to her entire gender being put into a sub-category of 'people who menstrate' which is absurd?

Look at her twitter.  She embraces the label.  Almost the entire cast of the films distanced from her over her comments as well to the point she was not invited to the reunion because if she was there Watson and Radcliffe likely would not have showed.

She keeps posting that trans women are just men claiming to be women to get access to women only places to rape real women.  The anti-trans shit is not really up for debate.  She embracing the TERF label.  That tweet you posted was the first post she tweeted.  Since then her tone has changed.  She got into it with Mason Alexander Park, who played Desire in Sandman, a few weeks ago for instance.

That said she did not make the game, it has a lot of great representation in terms of looks and accents, has a trans character, the team who made the game does not share her views and it seems like a fun game overall. 

The question is whether or not you want to her to get any support or not.

Banning trans women from women only spaces makes they have to be closest otherwise trans people who totally pass for women, will have to piss in the men's room. She also says the meds use to transition should not be used, despite every group claiming that physically transitioning after several years of socially transitioning is the best treatment for gender dysphoria. Before we allowed trans kids to take puberty blockers to transition later they would just kill themselves in extremely high numbers. It just now is dropping.

All this from taking exception with being labelled as a person who menstrates and choosing to adopt a label that was thrown at her for expressing that concern?

Site is wonky right now. Basically she keeps promoting views that represent a minority of trans people as if they are common. She claims that 99% of trans people are peaceful, but then 99% of her posts about trans people concern violence. Also her views in that article are the ones used to justify hate and discrimination of trans people.

What she is doing is like saying that black people need to be kept to their own areas because they are more violent than white people. Or black people should not compete with white people because their bodies are more preconditioned to physical activities. We know that is not ok to say these days, but saying it about trans people is ok.

Also these are the same arguments that pushed every single openly trans or non-binary person I know of off this site and the old site. This is not just a conversation that effects a nebulous group, people literally did not feel ok posting on this site because all threads on this topic descend into anti-trans attitudes sadly making them well not welcome or despised.

Reading through her essay and her views are far more nuanced than what's being put out. She acknowledges that in some cases transitioning is a valid solution, but most young people will out-grow their dysphoria. As far as trans women being forced into the men's room, her issue is with the Gender Recognition Certificate that allows a trans person to be recognised as a woman and have a legal right to enter those spaces without taking hormones or undergoing surgery.

But that does not then apply to her twitter, where she focuses only on the small minority, which then becomes generalized to trans people in general when it comes to policy.

Her biggest crime is that she should have moved on and left it at the blog. As we've seen, people will twist what she says and make it out to be far more abusive than it is.

If she moved on this would not be an issue. But she did not and retweets or posts something very single day for years.

Anything less than a retraction was always going to lead to some backlash. While Rowling has to accept some responsibility for stoking the flames, there's also some toxic members who took it too far.

She absolutely will not retract. She is all in on this.

This could all lead to the first major non card based MTG game as people are demanding a game based on their college of wizardry Strixhaven, which is Harry Potter basically without JKR.

I watched a bit of people playing it, it looks fun. I will not give that hag any cash at release though.

Okay, that is reasonable to get upset about (like I said, I'd only gotten some surface level shit), gets lost in the wash as the main conceit I've seen continually mentioned is the biology one. So, this is a case where it's actually founded, but it's not her game, and really, I tend to be able to separate the artist for the art, unless it's, like, Chris Benoit extreme.

There are secondary controversies too. The lead designer had a right wing hate channel on youtube and claimed the studio supported him despite it, he did quit though. Also the goblins in the game are the antisemitic stereotype of jews.

Then people are upset that they added a trans person to the game to try to placate the controversy, which is now being covered as the first game to have a trans character which is not even remotely true.

Just all talk on this game is toxic as fuck.

The people I seen playing it are having fun with it, but it is a def a game that you like quietly enjoy because talking about it on the internet just goes toxic instantly.

What I find weird is the people who are praising JKR for standing firm on the anti-trans stuff, are not likely even playing this game, just claiming they love it to bash trans people who say people should not support it.

Was this same x pac heat directed at Fantastic Beats or was the issues with Depp more over?

Or was her terf status as the feminist final boss afterwards?

This is nuclear levels of heat in some communities. The fact that JKR is funding trans hate groups with the profits means this goes beyond most normal cancel culture shit.
