You just signed Paul Wight to a 10 year contract. You are having him debut at St. Valentine's Day Massacre to interfere in the Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Vince McMahon cage match on Vince's behalf. The Corporation has themselves a big new member. What do you call him?

The Titan does sound bad ass, I never knew about that. Did WCW really own the trademarks to "The Giant" though? I mean WWF Had Andre The Giant first and they were piggybacking off of that intellectual property to begin with. Seemed like they should have let the guy keep his name all things considered.
But I was fine with his regular name Paul White, not the coolest real name(always thought Christian being used for a guy with a real name like Jason Reso was just a crime against wrestling names) I wasn't a fan of them calling him Big Show when that started. I thought The Giant was better.
They could have went a lot of different ways with it for sure. What if he just had no name. He had no music in WCW that was cool.

I was going to ask the same. Was The Giant too generic to be trademarked? Just keep him as The Giant. It's a great wrestling name.

Tremendous name for The Giant or any big fella. Such a great name I used it for the lead heel in my 1993 wrestling figure league! The Colossus was my Vader stand in. Had epic feuds over the title with Lumberjack Jess & Jackson Smith. =========== I was always under the assumption WCW had trademarked The Giant. Maybe WWF could have called him Paul The Giant as an homage to Andre. But why would they? Paul The Giant sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon character- a loveable doofus whose gullibility gets the main protagonist into trouble before he ultimately cleans up his own mess through size, strength, and brute force. Paul The Giant sometimes learns a valuable life lesson only to forget it by the next episode.

So far I'm sticking with The Big Show.
Not through a lack of trying. In another time or another era The Colossus, The Titan, The Juggernaut would all be sweet names but this was the Attitude Era. The names had to have a post-modern spin to them and acted more like codenames. We're working with names like Edge, Christian, Test, Meat, Ivory etc Even guys who had been their a spell were changing their names to fit in like Mr. Ass, The Godfather, Mideon etc.
Even guys like Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero had monickers that could have easily been their gimmick name. Y2J, The Rabid Wolverine, Latino Heat etc.
Didn't they try a different name for The Big Show and Paul White? The Big Nasty? Anyone remember this?
It's kind of like wrestling attire & entrances. It's not something I really comment on when I discuss wrestling, but names matter especially when you go down a roster. Looking at WCW '98 and maybe I'm alone but when I see names like Raven, Saturn, Kanyon, Wrath, Glacier, Blitzkrieg etc. I'm at peace but then you throw a Mean Mike and Tough Tom and it feels like I've travelled back to 1991.

As I did for him in a "what is (insert wrestler) doing here at the Impact Zone" thread on the old board, I'll go with the name "Big Wight Bastard".😂

Y2J, The Rabid Wolverine, Latino Heat etc. I think this is why Big Show seemed awkward to me. He should have been The Big Show Paul (cool last name). Like Stone Cold Steve Austin. It was the era of normal(ish) names. Rip off Frank Thomas, The Big Hurt Paul Aiken or some shit.

I’ve been on this kick on the job adding McGee to my helpers names it’s like a fart it just never ceases to be funny. While a guy was handing me pressure blocks for a beam I came up with a pretty rad pro wrestler name: Pressure Block McGee

This got me thinking of really shit ways they could have named and debuted Show, as a lackey. In September 1998, Dustin Runnels was doing the religious gimmick with the "He is Coming Back" signs and t-shirts. If Show was coming in a bit earlier, it could have been referencing him and he'd be The Colossus of Rhodes. ---------------------------- Or he could have been Real Man's Man Steven Regal's muscle as a Paul Bunyan character. Didn't they try a different name for The Big Show and Paul White? The Big Nasty? Anyone remember this? I do. He was "Big Nasty" Paul Wight briefly. I like to think that's what Bossman was referencing late in 1999 with "Paul Wight, you're a nasty bastard, and you're momma says so!"
