I'm more excited for Edge's run in AEW than his return to WWE. It's funny that c brought up Punk because I remember comparing the two when Punk returned and felt his run was better because of the fresher match-ups. It was a difficult run to rate with COVID and what-not but it just seemed like outside of the Rumble, his run was underwhelming. Not bad, but considering the spot he was in and the talent he got to work it just seemed like a lot of matches were 'fine'.
Curious to see if it was because of the shackles or if it's old habits. Edge has always been a big picture guy with the promos, the spectacle and the matches. Supposedly his vision of the Judgement Day clashed with Vince's which is why he was kicked out of the group and they'd go onto have more success without him. Curious to see if Edge is just dead weight or if his vision was compromised. I'd suspect there's a bit of both at play, but I think with Christian there he'll have somebody he trusts and I'm sure they've had a few ideas they've workshopped and would love to put out there ala the Rumble.

OMG Christian at the scrum is hilarious. He is arguing with the reporters and fully in character.
Way I see Edge is he had a full career and since his return this is all bonus stuff. Having an AEW run should be good for his fans as he will have a lot of freedom here to do whatever he wants to do before he hangs up boots on full time work. And likely if needed, he can even go part time in AEW ala Sting.
Also for Edge, he knows a lot of the producers. Jericho, Paige, Hardyz, Tazz, JR, etc. While it looks like he is stepping into a new fed where he does not know many people, he does know a lot of people. And most of the roster grew up idolizing Edge so he will be easily welcomed and made to feel at home.

An interesting point to consider if we revisit The Monday Night Wars...
Those jumping to The WWE, were the young prospects - Austin, Triple H, Jericho, Eddie, Benoit, Big Show, etc
Those who jumped to WCW were the older guys - Hogan, Hall, Nash... everyone over 35 in WWE it seemed.
The cynic in me can't help see the same thing happening today.
The young prospects are signing to WWE - Cargill, Pillman, Davenport, Frazer, and the return of Cody. Sure, there's a chance none of these guys will amount to anything, but that's also a chance I'm sure WWE took with similar prospects in the 1990s. While older talent is jumping to AEW - Sting, Christian, Punk, Edge, Joe, The Hardys, etc is anyone listed here realistically working in 5 years time?
Speaking to the longevity of the WWE, they've always put stock in the next generation - hence it's focus on developmental. While AEW has really only put stock in one guy under 30 to carry this brand for the next 10-15 years, that being MJF.
So while seeing Edge in AEW is exciting, I can't help but to think about what AEW looks like in a few years time when all these old dogs are just too old to chase that ball, and the only puppy that's been put over inevitablely gets hurt or jumps ship.

Things are much different these days. AEW and WWE are so different they are not really competing. WWE wants to train its own people and does not really want people trained elsewhere. There are rare exceptions, but most of the people they bring in, they stick in developmental then NXT to retrain. Then WWE rarely uses people not on contract now.
AEW does not care about either. So Tony can let other people develop stars, then sign them. He does not need to make his own stars from scratch. Also his roster is essentially everyone not on WWE contract.
Finally the direction of the two brands are completely different. WWE is entertainment, AEW is wrestling. WWE will always have the stronger crossover appeal, but AEW will appeal more to wrestling fans as that is the focus, not entertainment. And it kind of shows as the long term booking in AEW is the tradeoff for doing just big matches.

There are some interesting parrallels but keep in mind AEW have also signed Jon Moxley, Adam Cole, Swerve Strickland, Keith Lee, Kyle O'Reilly, FTR, Malakai Black, Miro, Toni Storm, Daniel Garcia etc. among others. One thing they've largely done well is that they've put a lot of non-WWE guys over whether it be MJF, Orange Cassidy, Darby Allin, Hangman Page and they don't immediately get pushed down the card by a new signing.
It is something they have to be mindful of. You don't want to see too many Johnny TVs, Nick Nemeths, Shelton Benjamins etc. taking up TV time.

Thing with indy wrestling is they are used to losing stars so they excel at making new ones. Everyone who ever got big on the indys gets signed. Used to be just by WWE, and now WWE and AEW. People got from AEW to WWE, AEW still can get the top regional guys from the indys. There are a lot of amazing people still unsigned by AEW, and new people starting to train every week.
Fast example, Jack Cartwheel. Guy is like a young Will Ospreay, but only did AEW Elevation and almost no one knows who he is. Guy could easily be made into a star in AEW though.

This by any means isn't a AEW-bash, I'm enjoying what AEW is doing and just hope they're still doing this at this level and with this consistency 10, 15, 20 years from now. c made an interesting point about AEW not needing to create stars, they can let someone else do it. But what happens, when that tap begins to run dry? On the WWE decides it's really thirsty? Or there isn't a yearly release-a-thon from WWE to fill the ranks? And that's where AEW has to be careful with signing these older guys - are they just here for the ride, a paycheque and to tick a few boxes (ie; I wanna wrestle this guy, I wanna wrestle that guy... and sure, it's exciting to see... for now) but are any of these guys really putting over new stars? And when I say " putting over " I don't necessarily mean what they've done with Darby or Sammy or anyone else... I mean what they've done with MJF. Something I think about considering AEW is still a young company, and having seen the birth of TNA and ROH in real time is, during those first few years of a new promotion the talent is giving the company the rub. The brand is using the credibility and the marquee of said talent to attract fans. But at some point, the roles need to reverse and the brand begins to give the new talent the rub. There needs to be a switch from the talent putting over AEW, to AEW putting over talent. Eric Bischoff spoke of the idea of WCW winning The Monday Night Wars and suggesting WCW would still likely fall apart, because he/they didn't have the foresight to invest in creating new talent or " the preservation of the industry " and TNA was perhaps the most recent to make the same mistake by relying so heavily on former WWE and even WCW talent. To give you something to think about - if you removed all the former WWE guys and The Elite from the AEW roster today, how strong would the card be?

You seem to swim in some of the dirtiest water c which is why you see so much of that ugly tribalism online (tribalism that is perpetuated by hard-line AEW fans mind you) most of what I have seen online over the last 24 hours is nothing short of " OMG! This is awesome! " My biggest issue with AEW today (as opposed to being completely obsessed with hating AEW a year ago) is the television product is uninteresting. Collision might be different, but we don't get that here. I skim through most of it without a lot of care. But in saying that, AEW does the big shows extremely well.

Twitter and Reddit is where I see the shit. WWE tribal fans are worse than AEW ones too IMO. AEW tribal fans are basically like WWE bores me so I do not watch. WWE ones are like AEW is a trash promotion that should not be on TV at all.
Yeah AEW TV is very hit or miss. Used to be every other week was skippable, then they made the duel shows and things got weird. Hoping with Tony wanting to start a new era, that means he will be booking better but who knows. Eitherway if TV does not look good I am cool skipping, watching highlights of what I want to see and just hitting the big shows that are always worth watching.

In a post-Punk world, dropping the unnecessary brand split would be best and throwing all the top guys on TV would be a sure-fire way to improve the TV product.
I have the same feelings about WWE. 50% of both RAW and Smackdown is skippable - but if you took the good from both brands and combined them on one show, it would be a tour de force each week.

Brand split already has ended. Some guys like to work one show or the other mostly because they want to spend time with family and want a lighter schedule, but a lot of people already floating back and forth, or doing both. Only reason for a brand split was Punk did not want to work with like a third of the fucking roster.

For tribalists that is a step too far. They watch one fed only and pretend the rest of wrestling does not exist to them. Why you get indy shows with big names working in front of a hundred people. Could go see your favorite wrestler wrestle, then chat with them for like 20 bucks in many places but fans are like showing up to an event is too hard. Just unreal to me.
Really curious if Edge does indy dates. Know my friend in NEW would kill to work him, and he is the guy who traditionally fights the vets given he faced so many of them and has a good rep for working them.

MJF vs The Righteous
I loved MJF vs Adam Cole, but there's also a big part of babyface MJF I dislike. That MJF was in full display in this handicap match. The MJF that panders to the crowd far too much, who artificially calls his moves to get whatever the opposite of cheap heat is, who uses dumbass moves like the Kangaroo Kick. He's basically a comedy jobber who happens to be the AEW World Champion. The best thing I have to say about this match is that Dutch really looks like Bray Wyatt when he laughs.
Eddie Kingston vs Katsuyori Shibata
One of my most anticipated matches and it did not disappoint. Fantastic work from both men. Although it wasn't Pure roles I appreciate commentary pointing out that Eddie used three rope breaks - I was keeping track too. But he did not use more than three. Shibata has been almost invincible in his AEW/ROH run but the ROH World Champion showed he has the toughness to overcome.
Kris Statlander vs Julia Hart
You come up with a gimmick that can be sumed up as "female Undertaker", you look at the AEW roster, and the last lady you'd give it to is the petite, blonde cheerleader. Yet Julia Hart has defied expectations and absolutely owned the gimmick, one of the best in all of wrestling. Her facial expressions are absolute fire. And what an entrance.
Now is Julia's chance to prove she can go in a big time match, and she certainly delivered, going blow for blow with the capable and underappreciated Kris Statlander. A great battle of Statlander's explosiveness and power against Hart's savagery and cunning. The exciting contest went Statlander's way after she countered Heartless into a nasty sequence of Tombstone Piledrivers. Thus ends Hart's long undefeated streak, but she has cemented her place as a dangerous force in the women's division.
Four Way Spotfest Tag Match
SKIP.
Hangman Page vs Swerve Strickland
It's about time these guys got some real spotlight. Hangman Page is on a quest to return to the top, while Swerve aims to get there for the first time. I'm surprised to see the crowd 100% in favour of Swerve until I realised he's a hometown boy.
Hangman Page can't be used to getting booed out of the building, but of course he just got on with the job, although the crowd certainly rattled him as evidenced by his long pauses while in control. The match was excellent. Swerve could do no wrong, even his cheating was met with raucous applause. It's that cheating that led him to win although he did most of the damage himself with a successive string of finishers. Great win, Swerve needed that far more than Hangman.
Ricky Starks vs Wheeler Yuta
A bit of a cooldown match in between two huge matches. Nevertheless this was a gritty hard fought contest, as expected. Wheeler Yuta may not have much body mass but I still buy into his tough guy routine. BCC does that for you. Ricky Starks won by countering Yuta's absurd rope swing thing he does into a Spear and Roshambo. Jon Moxley joined commentary but he didn't really find his groove until the next match.
Brian Danielson vs Zack Sabre Jr.
A match that deserves its own post, if not its own thread, even its own forum, but I'll keep it in here. I could write a lot of words, but I will just say that the ultimate dream match absolutely delivered beyond my wildest dreams. Absolutely brilliant, one of the greatest things I have ever witnessed. Excellent. Marvellous. Flawless. If I bothered to maintain a MOTY list this would go straight to the top. Thank you, Dragon. Thank you, Zack. And thank you to the commentary team, especially Moxley and McGuiness, for contributing to the experience in a positive way.
