Dude no lie I wanted one of these so bad when I was a kid. Encountered them once or twice at someone else's house and thought it must be amazing to have that. Like a trampoline in the yard at some point it's novelty wears off but if you only ever experienced it as a young kid once or twice... it leaves an imprint on you. Parents always no sold the request though. Anyone have experience with them in the wild? Or own one for some reason?

Similar deal to Ness. Encountered one somewhere as a kid. I don't even remember where. Grandma's guest room, maybe? Regardless of where, I thought it the bee's knees. Wanted one. But not as bad as I wanted a sofa bed. A couch that pulls out into a bed was darn near the pinnacle of human achievement to 1990ish Baker. How I wanted to shake the hand of the clever fellow who came up with that one. Never got either fwiw. One thing that made me skeptical of waterbeds...what happens when they spring a leak? Who wants a flooded bedroom? You don't have to worry about that with the superior sofa bed. Fact!

I also remember futons being all the rage until it was acknowledged it was just sleeping on the floor with extra steps and costs.

Add me to team @ness and team Baker. My cousin in North Dakota had a water bed, so sleepovers as kids was a battle with my brother of who got to sleep in the waterbed. Of course every time we went back home we'd ask our parents for one and it was met with a big ol' HELL NO.

As a child of a second marriage, all my cousins are like 20 years older than me. My aunt raised her sons in the 1970s and 1980s, the height of waterbeds, one of her boy's joining the waterbed revolution at some point during that period. When he moved out, the waterbed stayed (they always stayed), which meant when I slept over my aunt's house, I was sleeping in a waterbed. It rocked. Seriously rocked. Waterbeds were so cool. Honestly, probably a fad that should have never ended. Like, I'm sleeping on a horrible spring mattress right now because spring mattresses are expensive and I don't have the bread for a new one. I should be one garden hose away from fixing my comfort level in a few groovy minutes. But no, opted for a spring mattress, like some asshole clearly not living in the 1970s and 1980s.
My mom moved a lot when I was a kid. The apartment we moved into when I was going into 6th grade only had one bedroom. My mom opted for a futon in the living room for herself and I got the bedroom (thanks Mom). But I was at that age where a twin bed was starting to become too small and I wanted to upgrade to a full size mattress. That's when we decided: a second futon. My bedroom would become, in a sense, an apartment within an apartment. A living room/couch during the day, a bedroom/bed at night. Which mostly kept me out of the actual living room, and my mom could have her own peace there. A futon would probably wreck my back now, but at that age, I was basically unbreakable. It was a great choice, no regrets.

If we're bringing anything back from the 1970s, it needs to be conversation pits.

If we're bringing anything back from the 1970s, it needs to be conversation pits. What now? they were popular in a certain type of movies in the 70's and early 80's where people would have group "conversations"

Waterbeds were all the rage when I was a kid. My "Auntie and Uncle" next door who took care of me had one. I loved it. Never got one. If we're bringing anything back from the 1970s, it needs to be conversation pits. BIIIIGGG fan of conversation pits. Indoor/outdoor. Doesn't matter. I love the idea. I've always liked a sunken living room and Conversation pits are like 5 steps above that. You need a fairly large space to do one properly. I remember a great Aunt of mine having one and they filled it in at some point. I loved it.
