The Undertaker and Golddust are two of the best gimmicks or characters in wrestling history, but who currently are the best?

Elias has a good thing going. He has a well-defined character, with unique act that stands out and has worked in spite of his current limited ring ability. I thought he was completely bland in NXT, but kudos to him for stepping up and getting over on the main roster.
The Miz and Alexa Bliss have been excellent for a very long time. They live and breathe their characters, and they are completely believable. Two ultra-cocky, entitled heels who are fantastic at talking shit and getting the crowd riled up.
Brock and Braun as the two big badass guys who get noticed almost solely by incredible feats of strength and surprising athleticism. They are not sophisticated characters, but I'd take a simple and well executed gimmick over the kind of character that seems sophisticated and complex at first glance but doesn't make any sense when looked at any deeper. Bray Wyatt, I'm looking at you.

I think Elias COULD be great but the problem in my eyes is that he's got a gimmick that The Rock did so much better. Now sure Rock didn't do the sing a long thing every night but he could have and it would have been great. With Elias it just feels like a less fun version of that. If wwe would let him cut loose just a little bit, I think he could easily be the hottest act in the company but it just feels like we are only getting half of his true potential with that gimmick. I know he's a PG era guy so he has to abide by those rules but this is a gimmick that can still work perfectly. Go out, shit on the crowd and mock the opponent with a few zingers on the guitar. I guess time will tell.
I think Miz hollywood gimmick is great. Bliss spoiled brat gimmick is fun. I love Marty Scurll's whole thing. Braun as the unstoppable monster is great. Johnny Gargano as the ultimate baby face fits him so perfectly because he's a guy that most people just kind of naturally want to cheer for, he's much like a daniel bryan in that regard.

Go out, shit on the crowd and mock the opponent with a few zingers on the guitar. I guess time will tell. Isn't this exactly what he does? He's often pretty clever about it too, like playing a fan favourite song then changing the lyrics to insult the crowd. Obviously he's never going to meet your expectations if you want him to be as good as The Rock. That's just unfair.

We're still too early into the year, but last year Velveteen Dream, Hiromu Takahashi & Drew Gulack would be my picks. Dream's eccentric character is so vivid yet unpredictible making each segment a joy to watch because it feels so fresh. Takahashi is an extension of one of my favourite stables in Pro Wrestling and his take on the DGAF attitude of Los Ingobernables by being borderline crazy breathed fresh air into the group. Gulack was always a good hand on the indies, but who knew he could be so funny. His timing is spot on and if he wasn't trapped on a show nobody watches, he would have had a decent following on either Raw or SmackDown. Probably the best 'dweeb' since Kurt Angle circa 1999/2000.
I should give an honorable mention to the Usos who went from generic polynesians to these unique deliquents with their own way of cutting promos that resonated with the crowd. It was such a big turn-around and they've solidified themselves as one of the greatest tag teams of all-time.
If I had to pick one fresh gimmick from 2018, I prefer the Golden Lovers version of Omega over his previous incarnation. It always came across that he was pretending to be something he wasn't as The Cleaner, whereas being a flamboyant show-off is him down to a tee.
Of the 10s, nobody is better than NJPW's DVD merchant Toru Yano.

Other than Cody (who’s been great recently), I am really enjoying the gimmicks/characters of these wrestlers:
- Aleister Black - Velveteen Dream - Jay White - Usos - Johnny Gargano - Ciampa
There are others, but those are the first few that came to mind.

Elias hands down. Saw him live here a couple weeks ago and the crowd reaction was amazing. He's mega over with his gimmick and had the crowd cheering, then booing, then wanting to murder him, then cheering again..easily Elias.
Aleister Black has a very simple gimmick that works amazingly because of his charisma and presence: guy that likes black metal and kicking people. Definitely worth a mention.
Marty Scurll rules as well. #Villain
I'll third and fourth Drew Gulak, The Usos and Briscoes as well.
One that hasn't been mentioned yet: The Revival. They've been booked like shit since they came back from injury, but their gimmick is still awesome, at least to me. No Flips, Just Fists. TOP GUYS. SAY YEAH! Fuck I wish the WWE would push them harder. You've got The Steiners reincarnated as technical masters in the palm of your hand and you're barely using them. UGH.

I didn't consider the Revival, that's how much I buy into them being wrestling enthusiasts. They're one of the best tag teams I've seen in the modern era and I couldn't get enough of their stint with DIY.

Cody for me is top tier, number one. Everything he's been doing has been amazing.
Other favorites include Aleister Black, Velveteen Dream, The Usos, Nikki Cross, Elias, Braun, Gargano, Ciampa, Naito.

Velveteen Dream still has some fine tuning to do, but he's the one guy who I feel is doing something truly unique and natural with superstar potential since I've started watching again.

Breezango had so much potential but WWE made them a full blown comedy act and never really attempted to give them a serious push when the SD tag division was deader than dead.

They could be the next Edge & Christian but the WWE is fucking stupid with almost everything these days.

The greatest intercontinental champion of all time the Honky Tonk Man I always thought Honky Tonk Man was lame. I mean I know his character was kind of supposed to be lame but as a character, I thought he was pretty overrated. It was one of those things where I'm sure it was great for like a month or two but after that...meh.
