UsI knows it’s received some critical acclaim, but it hardly reinvented the wheel. Nor is it outlandishly good. It felt like every second B cinema horror flick of the early 2000s. It almost feels like it should have been a Netflix exclusive. I knew nothing about this movie apart from the basic outline but nailed the ‘twist’ in the first 5 minutes. Watch it. Move on. It was riding the coat tails of Get Out which was genuinely the biggest surprise to come out of 2017. Hardly anybody expected a sketch comic to put together a well thought out thriller with some nice plot devices.
I'm not sure which critics you read, because most sources I came across online shared your opinion. It's why I've yet to actually watch it despite it being right up my alley.

The ‘ Critical response ‘ section on its wiki article would have you think it’s a masterpiece. Referring to reviews stating “ universal acclaim “ and a “ colossal achievement “ And, without this becoming socio/political, for some reporters it may pick up an extra few points for varying reasons.

Saw Underwater, was basically a remake of Alien but underwater instead of in space. I didn’t hate the movie, but I didn’t like it/enjoy it. It’s basically a movie that now exists that I’ll forget about it in a months time.

Native Son-Alright movie, moves at a pretty brisk pace, a bit too briskly to really invest in anything, fine performances all around. Good enough for one watch.
Collateral-Haven't watched this one in its entirety since its release, holds up perfectly, excellent film without a letdown amongst the cast...Cruise doesn't play villains often enough, instills Vincent with a great energy that's both calm and in an instant frightening. Entertaining beginning to end, should rewatch it more often.
The Fourth Kind-Sucked, if you think about watching it, don't.
Z for Zachariah-It was a fine film, only 3 actors and they can mostly carry the fare, but then...it just kind of ends. Nothing really happens, nothing was challenged, nothing was lost, nothing was gained. The very epitome of a movie that's just...there.
More tomorrow, wanna get my box to at least 20%.

Went to a friend's house to watch a couple of flicks.
Muppet Treasure Island Not as good as A Muppet Christmas Carol, but pretty entertaining, and Tim Curry is an awesome Long John Silver.
It: Chapter 2 The film is very faithful to the book, and that includes the accurate capturing of King's long-winded narrative style. It's very long, and it doesn't justify its runtime. It gets pretty tedious after two hours or so, and the final act drags on seemingly forever.
That said, the actual content of the film is more good than bad. They brought in a big name in James McAvoy, but he doesn't overshadow the film at all. He fits right in with the lesser known actors. The book plot is very complex, jumping to and from present and past with multiple character arcs, but the film is able to convey in a way that that doesn't lose the viewer. Excellent writing.
King's imagination and creativity are limitless. The drawback to this is that his outlandish imagery doesn't always translate well to screen, so the vast majority of the scary moments are just very silly, often laughable. Perhaps that was intentional, because the first film also had this theme of "light-hearted horror". So the tone remains confusing, but at least it's consistent.
As a whole, the It saga is a pretty good story covering themes such as coming-of-age and friendship. My favourite theme is that the adults falling into the same situations as they faced as children. Eddie had a controlling, dominating mother; his wife is just the same. Beverly's father was emotionally and physically abusive; her husband is the same. As though our past haunts us forever. That is the core of the whole story. Adults coming together and facing their worst fears, fears that have haunted them since childhood.

Funny the differences in perception , I wouldn’t have considered McAvoy to be one of the top two names in the movie.

Bad Boys for Life: I went and saw the new Bad Boys movie last night. It's not my favourite in the series, but I still enjoyed the movie. Both Will Smith and Martin Lawrence continue to play off of each other so well, glad to see they didn't lose a step in that regard. If you're a fan of the other two movies, then it's definitely worth checking out. Saw Underwater, was basically a remake of Alien but underwater instead of in space. I didn’t hate the movie, but I didn’t like it/enjoy it. It’s basically a movie that now exists that I’ll forget about it in a months time. Pretty much this. It doesn't help, that Kristen Stewart is no Sigourney Weaver, acting wise.

I vaguely know the name, but SNL guys are like Gods in America, so I get that. The other must be Jessica Chastain? I know the name and I vaguely recognised her face, but she's no James McAvoy. He was the lead in Starter For Ten!

Funny the differences in perception , I wouldn’t have considered McAvoy to be one of the top two names in the movie. I mean, Hader's on a tear, but still an up and comer...#1 name has to be between Chastain and McAvoy. Either way: Galveston: Another okay watch, but nothing memorable happens...good performances. Another one watcher. Arizona-Dark comedy that skews more towards dark than comedy, takes Danny Mcbride's usual schtick and frames it in a real world light, where he's just a psychopath. Enjoyed it enough, a not-quite-a-slasher thing going, wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again, but wouldn't change the channel. Cyrus-On a real mediocre streak yesterday, another just okay film where Jonah Hill plays the shitty son to John C. Reiley's new love interest. Think Step Brothers dialed back to realistic proportions with some better handled drama. One and done again. My Dinner with Herve-Really enjoyed this one, funny and tragic all at the same time, Herve certainly didn't have an easy life, but evidently that made him kind of a dick when things started to go his way. Certainly some underlying mental issues there, especially considering his ending. I'd recommend it.

Google result numbers prove everything.
Bill Skarsgård has 6,640,000 results. Garbage. Unpopular fool.
Bill Hader has 10,600,000 results. Better.
James McAvoy has 14,700,000 results. Destroyed.
Jessica Chastain is the most popular with 18,300,000 results. Never heard of her.

Chastain is definitely the biggest star of the group for me. I didn’t realize there were people that didn’t know who she was, between the two Oscar nominations and the decent sized part in The Martian.
McAvoy and I have just missed each other, with no interest in Split or the X-Men movies, I haven’t seen a movie he was in in the last fifteen years, which also may be the only movie I’ve seen him in (Wimbledon). I know Atonement and Last King of Scotland were well received, but I definitely would t think of him as a big name.
And I wouldn’t think of Hader as a better actor than McAvoy (hell I couldn’t really compare) but he’s in everything.

How do you play this game? I’m curious what Finn Wolfhard is gonna pull in. Also I watched the Lion King remake with the girl tonight. I don’t understand the point of remaking it, but I guess it’s technically impressive.

Just looking through Chastain's filmography and this is actually the first film I've seen her in. Looks like I've missed her in the same way you've missed McAvoy. I mainly base my perception of McAvoy's fame on his acclaimed performances in Split and Glass, but those were relatively niche films. But taking over Patrick Stewart's role in the X-Men movies is a pretty big deal. How do you play this game? I’m curious what Finn Wolfhard is gonna pull in. I'm guessing he just typed their names into google and counted the number of results. Finn gets 7,640,000, so he's at least above the new Pennywise actor. Interestingly, searching "Pennywise" gets 25,500,000 hits, putting Chastain and McAvoy to shame.

What if you Google search "it"?
I'm assuming it is the unsung mega star of the movie if we're going by web analytics.

It feels like McAvoy has been around a lot longer than those other actors. My perception maybe skewed though as we had an English assignment where we had to adapt a Shakespeare play and McAvoy happened to be starring in a show around the same time. Then he started popping up in a bunch of movies like Narnia and that Angelina Jolie action movie. By the time he played Xavier it felt like he was well established and a fantastic casting choice. I never saw it, but I'd imagine his big break out was the original run of Shameless which I think has been over-shadowed by it's US adaptation. I find it amazing that shows like The Office and Shameless did so well when so many other adaptations were god awful. Hader I only began to notice around Superbad and he was usually just a good supporting actor until Barry came along. Chastain has been a critical darling and has a fantastic filmography, but I'd say the Martian was the one role you'd know her from and even then let's be real Matt Damon was the star of that movie. You'd be excused for not thinking of it as a Chastain movie, like how The Hunger Games is a Jennifer Lawrence franchise. I am surprised that Emperor isn't more familiar with Jess though. She's a regular on the Graham Norton show and I thought he was assumed watching over there.
Final point on McAvoy, Emperor would say he deserved an Oscar nom for Starter For 10, I'd say he definitely deserved it for Split. What an amazing performance and it's ridiculous he wasn't even considered.

I haven't seen the new IT movies, mostly cause I found the 1990 mini-series to be such a chore to watch (is it fair? probably not). I've also just never been big on adaptations of Stephen King's work (the exceptions being The Green Mile, Stand By Me, and Shawshank Redemption).

Marriage Story
Actually trying to watch all the Oscar nominees this year for Best Picture, but to be honest I wanted to see this movie anyway because of all the fuss and memes.
Spoilers ahead.
I wasn’t very invested in the movie. It wasn’t what I expected. I can’t relate to successful actors living decent lives in New York and LA. I’m also in a loving marriage. It has its flaws, we have our fights and problems, but it’s been 10 years and we’ve worked them out every time. I think we’re good.
But even though I couldn’t relate, I still got really into the acting and the story. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson absolutely killed. And the way the movie was shot was incredible too. It was like watching a play. You were drawn in and it was like you were along for the ride whether you liked it or not.
Then out of nowhere Driver is reading that note with his kid at the end of the movie and I fucking cried. I wasn’t even that into it but I lost it anyway.
So yeah. It won me over. 8/10. Worth your time.

Never got the hate for Secret Window, I enjoyed the hell out of it.
Either way, got through Alita: Battle Angel, really enjoyed it. While I've never watched the anime, this felt like the most anime like live action movie I've seen. Good performances, great action, definitely a solid watch.

I see what all the hype was about. When the Oscar noms got announced everyone was angry that Adam Sandler got snubbed. I was like “no way,” but now I’m like “way.”
That movie ruled. Holy shit was it a ride. I loved it.
