Birds of Prey: A major plot point is a character needing to take a shit. Riveting. I always wondered what would happen in a big super hero battle if someone got the trouble guts. Good to know a movie will finally address it.

Uncut Gems I see what all the hype was about. When the Oscar noms got announced everyone was angry that Adam Sandler got snubbed. I was like “no way,” but now I’m like “way.” That movie ruled. Holy shit was it a ride. I loved it. It's what consistently pisses me off about Sandler, he's proven an actually talented actor in stuff like Punch Drunk Love and Reign Over Me...but most the time he's just half assing it through just as half assed comedy schlock.

Sandler tried his hands at serious roles, but he struggled to get good parts. For every Punch Drunk Love there was a Spanglish and fans didn't want to see him in those roles. In the case of PDL and Uncut Gems the roles were written specifically for him and his strengths as an actor so they worked.
PTA was a huge fan of Sandler's and wanted to work with him, especially after watching him in Big Daddy which has some poignant moments.

He gave it another shot with Reign Over Me which was an improvement, but Spanglish put a halt to the proceedings.
I don't consider Click a 'serious' role. It's a Sandler produced comedy that has a lot in common with his past productions. It's easily his most moving comedy, but I don't consider it in the same realm as PDL.
Also PTA = Paul Thomas Anderson aka The Tarantino Killer.

The best part about Uncut Gems is that about half way through the movie I decided that he wasn’t just a shyster and a fuck up, but that he was doing all this on purpose for some big pay off in the end.
I mean, I was kinda right...I just gave the character too much credit.

Birds of Prey: Just came back from watching the latest comic book film. I still really like Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, I also thought there were a few cool moments in the movie (the Canary Cry being one of them). Having said that, while I didn’t think it was bad, I really didn’t think it was all that great either. 2020 Movie Rankings 3. Underwater 2. Birds of Prey 1. Bad Boys for Life

Birds of Prey and Yadda Yadda: Solid dumb fun, Suicide Squad done better. Nice action, decent laughs, Robbie owns yet again. Biggest complaint is the shit hipster pickpocket Cassie Cain, not terrible as a performance, just a shitty Cassandra. Solid mid-tier experience.

The Irishman
BOOOOOOOO
Did anyone else watch this and feel like it was Martin Scorcese jerking off in front of you for almost 4 hours? I get that this was his big pet project he's been trying to make forever, but man...it was so hard to get through. And I'm a huuuuge sucker for mob movies. And Joe Pesci.
Pacino and Pesci were good in their roles. DeNiro was fine too, and he was definitely the right choice for a stoic, emotionless hit man. But beyond that the movie was dry and felt pointless.
Maybe that was the point. That the most infamous mob disappearance in human history was in the end nothing more than just another hit job that really had no impact in the end. Everyone that had anything to do with it went to prison or died, and the world moved on without the most powerful men outside the White House at the time. And I did like the scene where Sheeran is old and on death's door, finally feeling some remorse for what he did, and the nurse helping him doesn't even know who Jimmy Hoffa is.
But did you need 4 fucking hours to tell that story? I don't think you did. At least not in the way you told it. There has to be at least an hour of that movie that could have gone away, or they could have done some scenes differently. The one that jumps to mind is the award dinner for Sheeran. I swear that scene is 40 minutes long and they have the same conversation about disappearing Hoffa 3 different times. There's one.
Anyway...I'm glad the Academy didn't jerk themselves off too and give this movie any awards last night.

I liked it... but I also watched it in increments so that helped. I don’t like songs that last five minutes or movies that go over 200 minutes.
I was recently enthused by how much my daughter enjoyed the original Willy Wonka. She even liked that no good lazy Grandpa Joe.

I really dug the King of Comedy, there was a part of me that wanted to see Rupert Pupkin become the Ed Wood of the stand-up scene but then it went full on Coen Brothers and I was hooked. We don't get to see his material until right at the end and it's heart-wrenching. Poor Rupe is there trying to spin his awful childhood into this light-hearted talk show host routine and while the audience are good sports you know they shouldn't be and this whole thing has been a coping mechanism.
Also saw the Joker again just to see if it can stand on it's own. If anything I found it's message on mental health to be a lot more complex than how it was covered. Not only are we ill-equipped to deal with it, it's a problem that festers because the affected take their frustrations out on others causing them damage. Instead of looking for a health solution, they search for a target, somebody they believe can handle it when in truth their solution is far more vile and disproportionate than anything the entitled can ever inflict on them. I heard a lot of people say it painted the Joker as a hero and Thomas Wayne as the villain, did they actually watch the movie? That's the initial impression we're given, but as it comes out Wayne was a victim and it was the mother who was the real monster.
Phoenix is still great in the role and I'm glad the Academy recognised him and gave the film a nomination.

I liked Irishman, but it was the movie equivalent of a greatest hits album, brought nothing new, Scorsese by numbers. With some questionable CGI moments to boot, which will age it worse than any of his other movies. Pesci killed it though, playing the polar opposite of what made him famous.

I really enjoyed Parasite, probably my favorite movie I’ve seen from 2019, though I didn’t see a lot of great stuff last year. It’s the fourth Best Picture nominee I’ve seen and it’s head and shoulders above the other three.

The Beatles Movie. A struggling musician wakes up after an accident in an alternative reality without the music of The Beatles and takes the opportunity to seek fame and fortune recording their songs.
Really liked this. Funny, charming movie, with possibly the greatest soundtrack ever produced.

It’s the fourth Best Picture nominee I’ve seen and it’s head and shoulders above the other three. Check out Snowpiercer if you have not. Same director and his first shot at some of the themes he reused here. And you are right was not even close this year. Hope to see Bong Joon-ho's next films get wider releases as not only did critics love Parasite, word of mouth was huge on this film blowing it up on social media. Still drawing people to theaters in some places despite the DVD release. It is surreal.

Lion King (remake): And so continues the trend of Disney remakes being...sufficient. Was decent for what it was, inferior to the original in every way, but entertaining enough.
Aladdin (remake): See my review of the Lion King? That...but less so. Mainly comes down to the worst casting of any of them in Jafar, ironically, the Sultan should have been Jafar, that actor could have nailed it. One we got just came off as soft, not an ounce of menace to be found. Fix that, definitely rate it higher. Will Smith was entertaining as the character Genie (easily the best part of the movie), but didn’t care for his renditions of the songs, a bit flat at times, but ESPECIALLY the needless changing of lyrics, worst offender:
“Heard your princess was a sight, lovely to see.”
“Heard your princess was hot, so where is she?”
Like, the fuck?
Ranking:
Beauty and the Beast Jungle Book Lion King Aladdin/Cinderella

Colour out of Space New Nicolas Cage movie based on HP lovecraft story by the same name. It is a very, very strange movie. The use of colours is beautiful and the storyline is interesting... considering the duration it doesn’t really explain too much but you’re basically along for a crazy ride. Most of the characters are one dimensional, Nicolas Cage’s character is the only one who seems to do much development. The storyline and performances is really the least noticeable thing in this. It was actually horrifying. The visuals/the sounds, just the suddenness of it all. It was honestly creepy af. As soon as System and I finished watching it there was a super loud bang outside (this was at midnight) so really glad we didn’t have to have an early night

Mortal Engines: Wouldn't know this was Peter Jackson if I wasn't told it was Peter Jackson, felt like typical YA fare. Some good spectacle, not much else there. give it a 6.
Rocketman: Egerton does a fantastic job as Elton, musical numbers are well done, gives you a general idea of some major strokes in a non-direct telling (these musical biopics rarely are, but this one is actually a MUSICAL biopic). Not as good as Ray, on par with Bohemian Rhapsody. 8/10
Finally got around to Warrior, amazing top to bottom. Nolte, Edgerton, and Hardy form a perfect trinity, truly felt like these people were father and sons. Rocky of MMA movie, granted there's less of a selection than for boxing...but it's also better than the majority of boxing films. Beautiful climax. 10/10

ParasiteFucking incredible. My expectations were sky high, and they were certainly met, perhaps even exceeded. What an experience, to see a Korean movie in a cinema. Flawless. Korean cinema is the best, and it's finally getting some attention. I feel like fans of Tarantino would love this film. I know that means UT will never watch it, but he would never watch it anyway because he can't handle foreign or something.

I genuinely agree with Emperor that Parasite is totally the sort of film most people here would love. If Tarantino had made it it would already have been on numerous UT countdowns. If you are able to see it in a theatre you really should, as watching it with a packed crowd was one of my favourite cinema experiences in a long time - especially if you can avoid finding out much about it before going in.
