Sonic the Hedgehog: So I went and saw the Sonic movie earlier today, it was surprisingly a lot of fun, way more so than I thought it would be. Usually, films based on video game properties really aren’t that good, but the last two (this and Detective Pikachu) have been pretty enjoyable in my opinion. 2020 Movie Rankings 6. Underwater 5. The Call of the Wild 4. Birds of Prey 3. The Invisible Man 2. Sonic The Hedgehog 1. Bad Boys for Life

Yesterday was solid enough, even if I don't buy into the whole "these are the most amazing songs ever written" schtick of the film. Give it a 7/10.

Play Misty For Me (1971) This is Clint Eastwood's directing debut, but it won't be making my directorial debuts list. I don't mean to suggest it's a terrible film, more a tragic case of wasted potential. It has a really good psychological thriller plot, but the teething issues that often come with a first attempt come to the forefront and somewhat ruin the experience.
The basic premise of the story is that Clint plays a radio DJ who is preyed upon an obsessive psychopathic woman. Think of Misery, except the stalker and the stalkee are not confined to the same building. In a way, the fact that the events of these films takes place in an open area, where everyone has freedom of movement, is even more terrifying.
An emotionally demanding performance from the male lead is required, so the biggest mistake the director made is casting himself as the lead. Not only does he expose himself as an actor with the emotional capacity of a sieve, his character's masculine boldness and inability to be vulnerable severely hurts the story. In some ways the disturbing events of the film wouldn't be possible if Clint's character wasn't as dumb as a rock, but that's not a great justification. He is a victim, but it's hard to root for him if his incompetence is one of the main causes of the events, especially if he shows no apparent emotion. Even when the stalker woman destroys his apartment and fatally wounds his housekeeper, nothing is done. The sergeant asks him a few useless questions, she gets taken to prison and released after a few days. Clint doesn't make any effort to assist the police, for no discernible reason, even though he knows pretty much everything that led up to the crime, and knows how dangerous she is.
Like I said, wasted potential. Cast a good actor as the lead, don't write him like Dirty Harry, and the potential is there for a GOAT thriller. Needs a good ending too; the actual ending was laughably bad.
There are many good things about the film. Jessica Walter is fantastically cast as Evelyn, the psycho woman. Her performance gives Misery's Kathy Bates a run for her money. The plot is paced well. The suspenseful moments are genuinely suspenseful, and the shocking moments are genuinely shocking. A lot of stuff works, but enough doesn't work to make it a great movie.
Remakes are a hot topic these days, but this is the kind of film that should be remade, as opposed to films that were already great to begin with.

Sonic: While not great by any stretch, way better than anything I'd have assumed from the trailers. Fun movie start to finish, smart move getting Jim Carrey to come in an be Jim Carrey to give the movie that extra pop on the villain front. Just a pity they went for the bad design to begin with, as you could tell the add ons were a bit rough, Sonic's visuals could have worked much better, though still reasonable enough. Nice brisk run time, doesn't overstay it's welcome. Give it a B+.

Been having Wife pick movies for movie night the past two nights. Up first was the latest Charlie's Angels remake. Honestly, not nearly as offensive as I thought it would be. Not great, not even good, but I'm willing to say not bad. Kristen Stewart sucks and isn't my cup of tea visually, but she is for Wife... So I have to tolerate it. The other two leads weren't nearly as bad. However, can't not dig Patrick Stewart, Elizabeth Banks, Dijon Houston, Finnick from Hunger Games, the lab partner, poor Ralph the security guard, Hodak, Johnny Australia, and the Saint. Biggest gripe was no real cameo by Lucy, Drew, and Cameron in the credits scenes. Then, last night was Knives Out. Really enjoyed it EXCEPT IGNORING THE PUKE CUP IN MARTA'S CAR!!! Such an unforgivable oversight, it almost ruined the whole movie. Anyway... Loved everyone, but loved Chris Evans the most.

Was great to see Rian Johnson return to what he does best. Knives Out was awesome.
Not sure if it should be considered a TV show or a long movie but Tiger King was amazing. I knew of Joey Exotic and followed him after he appeared on the John Oliver show, but holy shit, his story is more crazy than even John Oliver made him out to be. What an insane story of the craziest group of people. Know things are fucked up when the meth heads in the end are the only people who come out looking good.

Wife picks continued last night with Jumanji: The Next Level It was good, no better or worse than the first IMO. It didn't really do anything that new, but added enough to keep it entertaining. Loved the Aunt Nora nod to the original, Danny & Danny is a combo we need to see more of, and Hart & Rock are amazing — I'll watch them together in anything.

Once upon a time in Hollywood
Wonderfully directed and acted, and you expect as much considering the main cast.
I know there’s some rules about spoiling it’s twist, and I really thought the revelation who was living next door was it.
It’s a great movie, but isn’t half as good as QT thinks it is, saying that, it’s still a great movie.

The Invisible Man: Pretty enjoyable film, although a lot of how the suit works doesn’t make sense it isn’t explained (invisible = super strength?). Haven’t seen the original but I’m curious to check it out. Watched this over the weekend and was totally gripped! Elizabeth Moss is amazing - I don't think it would have been nearly as good without her - but there were some definite plot point problems. Adrian is some super scientific genius but he didn't think to change the code to his house after Cecilia escaped?

Bloodshot: When it comes to comic book properties, I mostly just read Marvel and DC, so I’m not sure how accurate this was to the Valient series, however, I liked the movie. Acting-wise, it’s a Vin Diesel film, you know what you’re going to get from him, so either you’ll like it, or you won’t. Outside of him, both Eiza Gonzalez and Guy Pearce had decent enough performances as well. The Hunt: It was a pretty decent/good movie, with a lot of violence, which was to be expected. I was pretty happy to see both Emma Roberts and Justin Heartly in this, though neither one of them got nearly enough screen time for my liking, which admittedly was disappointing. Gonna probably watch Fantasy Island next, keep those Blumhouse productions going (already seen The Invisible Man, and now The Hunt). 2020 Movie Rankings 8. Underwater 7. The Call of the Wild 6. Birds of Prey 5. The Invisible Man 4. The Hunt 3. Bloodshot 2. Sonic The Hedgehog 1. Bad Boys for Life

I watched Dark Places after learning it was a book adaption from the same author that brought us Gone Girl. One thing for sure, this female author is not afraid to represent women as some psycho bitches.

Seven Psychopaths Been meaning to watch this flick for a while and for good reason - I absolutely loved it! One of the funniest, laugh out loud movies I've seen in a long time. Bravo to everyone involved. Especially Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson. Those two guys are great.
The most credit of all goes to the scriptwriters. Not only did they write some amazing dialogue, but the plot itself is absolutely insane. You have a guy who is writing a script of a movie about Seven Psychopaths, who is living in a world where parts of that script are happening in reality, and Sam Rockwell has his own movie fantasy in his head and is trying to make those events happen in any way possible. Sounds insane, but the most genius part is that it all makes sense when actually watching the film. Despite the apparent complexity of the story, I wasn't lost at all and everything added up. Fantastic. Full marks.
American History X This movie is fucked up, but it's a great story, has a great message, and Ed Norton is a deity. It opened my eyes to the nasty world of the neo-nazi movement.

Caught Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, the Mortal Kombatiest adaptation to date. Basically MK1, but not an exact timeline with the games, similar, but many liberties taken. This is the adaptation all MK adaptations will be judged by, it should be used as reference to a live action adaptation. Action’s great, bloody and brutal from less than 5 minutes in. Great character moments. A must watch for any MK fan. Hopefully keep pumping these out, be all over them.
Finally got to Moneyball, thankfully a film that lives up to the hype, not one I’d likely return to intentionally (might not change the channel though), but entertaining start to finish, not a disappointing performance to be found. Pitt with his usual adeptness at carrying a scene, but Hill does quite well too.
Overlord, decent schlock, maybe don’t get a whole lot out of the premise...but well delivered.
Anna: Meh, it was okay. Discount Atomic Blonde, some solid action, but nothing too memorable all around. Probably would change the channel next time, unless there’s nothing else to watch...which there pretty much always is these days.

They all feel in the same wheelhouse to me, and I enjoyed them all similarly.

The director of Seven Psychopaths (and Three Billboards...), Martin McDonagh, also directed a fantastic film called In Bruges. Definitely in the same wheelhouse as the rest. Colin Farrell stars along with Brendan Glesson (Mad Eye Moody from Harry Potter). It's hilarious. The humour is quite British/Irish, so maybe it won't resonate so much with you, but give it a shot.

Never heard of The Lobster and The Guard. Tell me about it. Lobster stars Ferrell. It's a black comedy. Pretty slipstream surreal. Was hard to get into at first, and I honestly bailed the first time. But it was such an intriguing concept and world, I came back and gave it another shot. For whatever reason, I was able to stick with it. And so glad I did. It's got a little bit of a Logan's Run meets eHarmony and Animorphs and vibe. It's super weird, but in the end I think I really dug it overall. Guard stars Gleeson as a crotchety old policeman in a tiny Irish village where nothing ever happens, but they're suddenly rocked by a murder and drug conspiracy that brings bumbling American FBI into the picture to help... But styles clash. Was awfully British/Irish, so I'm sure there were humor aspects that went way over my head. Wouldn't be afraid to recommend either, but feel like Lobster takes a pre-warning before committing.

The Guard sounds a lot more intriguing. In fact, it sounds amazing.
