Watched Remember the Titans again today , man did I do this an injustice in my Big 100 by ranking it too low. Such a great and forever poignant film. Probably Disney’s best live action effort.

Daughter picked Frozen 2 for our daddy daughter slumber party tonight. Frozen 2 blows in comparison to the first, which was genuinely sweet and funny. The second one feels like old Disney, lacking mostly in humor and songs that go on way too long.

I forgot that Taika Waitit wrote the original script for Moana. Supposedly most of it got cut to make the movie 'whiter' but I'm sure his influence played apart.
I think if Taika had his way, it would have been more like Boy.

Frozen 2 was such a letdown compared to the original Frozen.
Rewatched Django Unchained for the first time since it was released and man that movie really holds up. Everyone was so strong in it. Jackson, DiCaprio and Waltz in particular. Foxx really stepped as well.

Ready or Not -
Just fucking brilliant and perfect. Tight script , GREAT writing of characters and a likeable and believable protagonist. I can't explain how much I fell in love with this movie watching it last night and was pissed at myself for putting it off for so long. I generally don't love horror comedies either but when they let the horror still be the focus whilst dropping great lines and exposition through comedic moments it totally works. Especially when it's only 90 minutes and there isn't a missed beat in the script.
Also love that Adam Brody is in it. One of the best , most overlooked actors out there right now and the 2nd best character in the movie.
Brilliant shit.

watched Palm Springs last night, after the weeks of hype from the internet I was maybe too excited and found it mildly disappointing. I think if I’d just found it and been like “weird, it’s an Andy samberg movie on Hulu so I’ll watch it” I would have liked it more.
Anyway, it’s funny and enjoyable, but treads on similar ground as a lot of other keep waking up the same day movies and the end is meh.

Rewatching some old favourites for the purposes of the Top 100.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012) Movies that depict characters with mental illness, particularly comedies, always have to tread carefully to not appear insensitive or even offensive. Silver Linings Playbook features two bipolar people trying to make sense of their thoughts and feelings. Fortunately, it succeeds in depicting bipolar disorder while being sensitive and laugh out loud funny. The script is tremendous, but I feel the most credit has to go to the phenomenal performances of Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Robert De Niro is also tremendous, as he always is, as the father who is hinted at being an undiagnosed bipolar.
It doesn't follow your traditional romcom formula. Instead of their being the introduction, the gradual high, the crushing low, and the triumphant finale, there's the introduction and an almost imperceptily fast string of highs and lows. This is because Pat (Cooper) and Tiffany (Lawrence) have no filter and are brutally honest with everyone around them, including each other. So the soaring highs and crushing lows are often presented in the same scenes, within seconds of each other. The acting skill that is required to juggle these emotions and switch between them at such a rapid pace is inconceivable to me, but they knocked it out of the park.
I had good memories of this film, probably enough to make the top 100, but this rewatch made me realise that Silver Linings Playbook is a masterpiece, and it's now sitting in my top 20.
I also rewatched Ringu (1998). Great film, but a 50-100 kind of great. I'm not sure if any horror movies will crack my top 50. Ringu is not one of them.

Unhinged: Good thriller film, Russel Crowe was a convincing villain. Nothing groundbreaking but probably the best film they’ve scraped out of the barrel to show so far during Covid. sandylea got free tix as the owner of the website she writes for writes weekly reviews for cinema releases...and is in Melbourne which is in stage 4 lockdown so cinemas are shut. We are also getting Tenet here on Aug 27 as Nolan is reportedly insisting on releasing it where possible. Seems like an idiotic move but I’m sure myself and the 5 other people in the cinema will enjoy the film. Cinema tonight:

Honestly I always liked when I had the theatre to myself. I was making it a serious habit to see stuff on Mondays after work and then get mad when a few people snuck into when I was projecting to be solo.

Ringu 2 I have very fond memories of this film. I don't know why. It's really not very good. It goes the route of trying to offer a scientific explanation for a supernatural ghost curse, which could be interesting if executed well, but it wasn't. The characters were bland as hell, the story didn't make much sense. When the film was over I felt as though I didn't learn anything new about the Ringu lore, I didn't experience any new kind of thrills or scares. 90 minutes of film with no real progression except a few people dying.
I discovered that Ringu 2 is not the first sequel to Ringu. The actual first sequel is called Spiral, which was released at the same time as Ringu, but it had no success so they decided to make another sequel.
Point is, won't be making my top 100.
No Country For Old Men The first 100 minutes of this movie are phenomenal. Then Llewelyn is killed (off screen) and the film loses all its momentum, struggling along to the end like a wounded dog for the final 20 minutes. I really didn't understand much about Tommy Lee Jones and his old man friends rambling on about whatever, and the scene where Anton Chigurh has the car accident. What's the point of all that? How did it connect to the rest of the filn? I didn't get it. It really ended on a sour note.
As I said, the rest was phenomenal. Really well made cat-and-mouse thriller with fantastic dialogue throughout. Would have been top 20 if it ended properly, but it didn't, so I don't even know where it will rank.

Jackie Brown (1997) When I first saw Jackie Brown many years ago, I declared it my favourite Quentin Tarantino film. I watched it again today, older and wiser. My opinion has not changed.
For me, the thing that sets Jackie Brown apart from the rest is that there is never a wasted moment. Most other Tarantino films have a scene or a subplot that I just don't care for. I love Tarantino's movies, but I often feel they would be perfect if they took out this scene or that scene.
Jackie Brown does not have this issue. It runs over two and a half hours, but none of it is wasted. The cast is phenomenal. Every scene, every line of dialogue is masterful. The casting is great. The plot is great. Sure, Samuel L Jackson isn't quite as memorable as he is in Pulp Fiction, and it doesn't quite have the same highs as Pulp Fiction, it doesn't have the same gory content as Kill Bill or Reservoir Dogs, but as a whole it's a really tight film and, in my opinion, Tarantino's best.

It's right up there I agree. I would have Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction ahead of Jackie Brown. I feel like Tarantino is slipping a bit, he is getting a little self indulgent. Once upon a time was one of those movies made for the critics and Inglorious bastards was just revenge violence porn for WW2.

The Secret Dare to Dream.
I honestly adored it, I was pretty interested in seeing it mainly for Josh Lucas as I love him in previous roles - especially Sweet Home Alabama which the director also worked on. I enjoy many of the directors other movies such EverAfter and Hitch.
It reminded me a lot of all the movies that have been adapted of Nicholas Sparks novels, they all seem to follow the same trend: guy/girl meet under a strange circumstance, guy or girl fixes house/family, life is better for it. So as I fan of those movies (no matter how repetitive they are) I loved it. Was a nice feel good film, with great performances.

Rewatching the original Jurassic Park trilogy with the gf on Netflix and we bought Kool-Aid Purplesaurus Rex Retro Jammers for the occassion. Grown man in my 30's but I dunnnt currr...
The inaugural movie is probably my favorite movie ever. The very first film I saw in theaters as a kid and my dad always laughs about his memory of me crying because I was afraid the dinosaurs would get hurt rather than all the humans.... I was dino-obsessed as a kid to say the least. Anyways, I picked up on a few things I never noticed before and found a greater appreciation for some of the dialogue.
Lost World still sucks ass but it has its moments. The RV scene was cool and Vince Vaughn fast-forwarding from "I joined Greenpeace to get laid" to "STOP KILLIN' DA 'SAURUSES!!!" from 0 to 60 is pretty damn funny. That gymnastic Raptor scene is still cheesy, obvious reference to Godzilla was obvious and that CGI did not hold up well.
JP3 is extremely underrated. The Dr. Grant raptor hallucination scene always gets a good laugh out of me. It's not a perfect movie by any means, but it's definitely the superior sequel.

Annie Hall (1977) Annie Hall is Woody Allen's masterpiece. It won Best Picture and Best Director, it is his most famous film, and regarded by most as his best. I've seen a few Woody Allen films and this is the standout, but not by any huge distance.
It's a unusual movie, but can best be described as a romantic comedy. The romance is between neurotic, paranoid stand-up comedian Alvin Singer (Woody Allen) and the title character Annie Hall (Diane Keaton). Having watched the film a second time, my opinion of his magnum opus has lessened.
Technically it's a great film, extremely innovative and unique. Much like the beloved Tarantino, Woody Allen is a man with his own style. This film is way ahead of its time in terms of narrative technique. Singer talks directly to the camera, sometimes in the middle of a scene, while the other characters stand around as if nothing strange is going on. There are many flashbacks, sometimes with the characters in the present watching, and even asking questions to the people in the flashback. There's a scene where the character's thoughts are written in subtitles while they are voicing different words. There's another scene where the thoughts are verbalised. There's a scene where Singer is animated and talks with the Wicked Queen from Snow White. The film covers a broad range of themes such as anti-semitism, psychoanalysis, the nature of life and death, and psychoanalysis.
These features are all fantastic, and a large part of why the film received such high praise. However, they are all parts of a whole and, for me, the complete viewing experience isn't anything special. The aforementioned gags are both amusing and a joy to watch because they are so well-crafted. Some of the dialogue and one liners are laugh out loud funny. I appreciate the craft, but at the same time the film seems a bit shallow. I mentioned the broad range of themes, but none of them are given particularly serious coverage, usually just off-hand remarks by Singer.
The main reason I can't connect with the film is that Keaton and Allen don't have good chemistry. I don't understand how any woman can stand to be around Singer for any length of time. He's constantly talking, and judging, and talking some more, and judging some more. Annie Hall seemingly has no reason to like the guy - apart from the memorable scene where they first meet - so I found it hard to buy into the relationship. It's not like Silver Linings Playbook, where the two leads have a mental disorder and fight a lot, but you can understand why they want to be with one another and fall in love. I don't get that vibe with Alvin Singer and Annie Hall. They are just two humans who appear in a series of scenes resembling short comedic skits, most of which aren't really that funny, and these skits are glued together by the aforementioned narrative techniques.
To summarise, Annie Hall is a film I want to love because of the incredible craftsmanship, the quirky dialogue style and its originality, but realistically it just doesn't work that well for me. Too clever for it's own good, or am I just not clever enough to get it? Who knows.

Honestly, after Dora's compelling performance as the oldest sister in Instant Family, and Wife writing a hilarious sketch comedy bit about Dora the Explora in college, I'm actually genuinely interested in checking the movie out.

I had a feeling you'd enjoy Jackie Brown Emperor. I just like how Tarantino took all the good will he picked up with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction to make a 90s Pam Grier flick. It wasn't just enough to get the movie made, he had to make it the best movie of Grier's career and even throw in Robert Forster to add to the challenge. He couldn't rely on his usual tricks either, there was no cool character to carry the movie, everybody is washed up or incredibly out of their depth which leads to the most unromantic scene put to film between Fonda and De Niro. Even with all of that on his plate, he managed to put together an enjoyable thriller with a fantastic cast that subverts a lot of the usual cliches which makes it more compelling. I like how it challenges the viewer on Jackie and while she maybe the underdog in this situation, she's not completely justified. There's even that set-up where we expect Michael Keaton to be up to no good because he's your typical smug cop, but he's completely by the book when it matters. It's a long movie, you have to make the commitment, but the pay-off is great and it has a fantastic final act. Of all the roles, it maybe the best in Jackson's career. Ordell is such an interesting character, so insecure, so flawed but not a complete push-over either. The quint-essential guy who always manages to be the smartest person in the room, because he fills himself with dummies.

UT, have you seen Kodachrome? If not, I'm calling you out with a recommendation to watch it for free on Netflix. Never heard of it before, Nonna picked it for us to watch during Wife's night nap last night, and it ended up being surprisingly good. Granted, my quality standards might be pretty warped right now. But anyway, it felt like something perhaps up your alley.

They made me almost want to describe it as Snowpiercer meets Wind River, but then that description would've been way off base. LOL Seen Knives Out. Loved everything except the puke cup plothole. Let me look up Ready or Not. Sounds familiar, might've seen it and not remember it readily.
