I knew I should've quoted your post. -_- EDIT: Can't out-trick the trickster, silly rabbit! Don’t know why you’re quoting my posts from other threads in here. Weirdo. What UT-alking 'bout, Willis?

Lifeboat (Alfred Hitchcock, 1944)
As far as I'm aware Hitchcock didn't make many movies concerning World War II, but this is one of them. The entire plot takes place on, surprise surprise, a lifeboat. The lifeboat and its passengers are among the remnants of an American ship attacked by a German U-Boat.
The first person we see on this lifeboat is a finely-dressed lady, with all her luggage. It's unclear how she arrived in that situation unspoiled, since the rest of the ragtag group of crewmen and civilians is dragged out of the ocean in the opening minutes of the movie. The lady is a journalist. She is very well-spoken, has a razor sharp wit, and is also able to speak German.
This last ability comes in handy, for the last gentleman dragged aboard is a German naval officer. Thus the seeds of distrust are sown, one enemy among many Americans. One headstrong American immediately announces his hatred of the German and wants him thrown overboard. The rest of the crew don't agree so much, so they keep him on board, with some reservation. It so happens he is the most able person to be on board, being an excellent navigator, a captain, and a surgeon. The tension between the German and the Americans drive the greater part of the narrative, but there's plenty of nice dialogue aned character work to keep things varied. There aren't any big name actors in the movie but they all do a fine job at keeping things fresh - it could have easily become stale.
Hitchcock simmers the tension as only he knows how, he throws a few twists and turns and wrinkles, culminating in an epic final act.
Not one of his best known films but certainly among my favourites from Hitchcock.

I can't remember the last time I laughed as much at a movie than I did watching The Breaker Upperers last night. Taika Waititi was a producer if that sells you on it more, if you've liked any of his other stuff you'll love this.

Shirley - First and foremost: Elisabeth Moss' performance was excellent. That being said, I really don't get the hype its receiving. Maybe it was me entering the film with a different expectation, but the movie seems to flounder about with long pretentious diatribes of little substance. You should watch for Moss but don't expect to be blown away, the 90% approval rating is misleading.
The Assistant - BORING. OVERHYPED. Little to no payoff at the end. Just go watch paint dry and you'll have a similar experience and climax.
Rent-a-Pal - Full of potential but it somehow misses the mark. It could have been served better with a little more editing. Will Wheaton was wasted here, he could have been such a better and more insidious villain here but the film never really gives him the opportunity to do such.

Village Of The Damned (Wolf Rilla, 1960)
Fucking awesome film.
The first scene shows people in a small, quaint English village. They all mysteriously pass out at the same time. They stay that way for a few hours. Investigations are made. The military identify the precise boundary which, when crossed, one passes out. Suddenly, the victims get back up. No harm done. The incident is never heard from again. Until two months later, when every single mature woman in the village becomes pregnant. Well, I won't reveal the rest. You'll have to see it yourself.
The film is a tidy 75 minutes. It crams a fair bit of content into that time. There is no wasted motion. Scenes are short. Days, weeks, even months can pass between a single scene. The pace is a bit jarring at first but I got used to it. The passage of time is explained well enough through the dialogue and the plot.
By 60s standards this was no doubt full-fledged horror, but by modern standards it's more like a sci-fi mystery with a small sprinkle of horror. It's expertly crafted, intriguing until the end, and has a fantastic final scene. It's also an intelligent film: it treats this clearly fictional scenario with maturity and scientific respect. One scene where a group of characters weigh up the ethical and moral decisions of how to move forward is one of the best in the entire movie. To top it all off, it's charmingly British.
It has to be one of the earliest examples of "creepy kids" in horror, and of the "domestic animals can detect when freaky shit is going on much better than humans" trope. The kids themselves look pretty normal, it's the way they act that is creepy. There's one special effect in the film. The first couple of times you see it it's actually a bit scary, but by the end the act has worn off, although it remains a little unsettling just because of how odd it looks.

Village of the Damned is a masterpiece. Loved the remake as well. The sequel is straight trash though.
The book was also pretty interesting. It is titled The Midwich Cuckoos.

I saw Wonder Woman 84 and I liked it, but it was too long and got a little boring towards the end - but overall a very fun experience. Quick question for comic book folk, Kristin Wiig’s character randomly becomes a big cat like a cheetah or something towards the end and there is no explanation for it. I’m guessing this is a character from the comics that you’d only know about if you read the comics?

She wished to be an apex predator, Max gifted her the extra wish to up her power as his body guard. Solid movie, not quite as good as the first, better climax though, agree with it being a bit long in the tooth and dragging in spots. No major complaints though.

In the comics Barbara Minerva is the third character to actually take up the Cheetah mantle, but the most well known and WW's arch nemesis. Unlike in the movie, comic Barbara is rich and spoiled. Long story short, she funds some kind of archaeological dig in Africa where she gets her powers and becomes Cheetah. She wanted the Lasso of Truth but then just gets hung up on besting Wonder Woman. There's some tweaks and changes over the years to her backstory, but basically every time she gets her powers magically and is fueled by envy and hate so that's pretty on the money.
I have now seen WW84 three times so I've gotten my $30 worth plus I needed to decide if I liked it, the parts I liked, etc.
People are just ripping it apart saying it's horrible, etc. I don't think it's AS bad as they are saying. Was it as good as the first one, no but that was a tall order to begin with.
{Spoiler}
Things I liked:
- opening scene. Lesson sets the tone for the movie and the ending
- The costume being brighter (more red and blue), silver bracers and more use of lasso and tiara
- I actually dug the 80's Superman feel. I'm so tired of everything being so dark and macabre nowadays. WW never was, so I don't know why people are expecting a Batman brooding feel and look. She's not Batman. Superman is not Batman. Aquaman is not Batman. Marvel has succeeded in capturing people's attention with still maintaining a light, comic feel so I don't know why people aren't as accepting of it with DC.
- her flying. Patty can't win. In the first movie everyone bitched WW wasn't flying, now this movie I don't know how many times I've seen 'WW doesn't fly'. Originally (1940's/early 50's) she didn't, much like the first movie, then in the 50/60's she leaned to float on air streams. She didn't in the TV series or in the 70's I don't think (I'll have to dig into that box and check) but ever since the Crisis of Infinite Earths retcon in 1985 she's been able to fly since she was created; gifted the power of flight by Hermes so they can all shut it and read a fucking comic.
- Kristen Wiig was fantastic as Barbara and becoming Cheetah. I hope they find a way to get her Cheetah powers back for another installment. My money is on her getting obsessed with getting them back and going into the back story of the African exhibition or Circe getting involved as she did in one of the comic retcons.
- Seeing her in the Golden Armor even though she didn't do much with it.
- I liked them fleshing out the Diana character a little more thought I do think it was eclipsed by Barbara and Max Lord's story. Lots of people disagree and just wanted to see WW the whole time, but how can you have Superman without fleshing out Clark Kent and how can you have Batman without fleshing out Bruce Wayne. Same thing here. There is no WW without Diana Prince. They showed her struggle and her journey so by the time you see her in BvS and JL you can understand where she's come from, what she's gone through.
- Lynda Carter cameo
Things I didn't like or am unsure about:
- they could have had a kick ass 80's soundtrack, but did not. After the trailer was expecting to hear a kickass remix of Blue Monday, but nope. I suppose I'll take the little bit of Frankie Goes to Hollywood they tossed me.
- too much use of lasso. Yes, I know I said above I liked seeing more use of the lasso, but at one point I thought that's all she's doing this film. She was almost like a cross between Spiderman and Catwoman.
- She seemed to be the underdog the entire film which isn't a bad thing, but it just wasn't Wonder Woman.
- Steve Trevor...again. He is really just such a small part of her character (one of my least favorites actually) and in many incarnations he ends up with Etta Candy and is just her friend, but of course they've made a man the most important part of her story. She is going to let the whole world suffer so she can have him, but he convinces her otherwise.
- the whole plot. It was flimsy. He becomes the stone? That's the best way to give him his mind control powers? Seriously, there wasn't one person who wished for world peace? We're all greedy, awful people?
- Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord. Seriously dude, thank god you have the Mandalorian. Might not all be his fault though. Maxwell Lord is a great ally turned baddie that they completely squandered in this. I get it, his backstory is very convoluted, but I think they could have introduced him here as an ally or in JL the same so we could have the awesome comic Infinite Crisis storyline down the line. Don't know about Infinite Crisis look it up because it's probably one of my favorite storylines in all comics in all decades. Basically over the years Maxwell Lord has been acting as an ally to the JL and gathered all the information he needs to use against them and make them ineffectual as possible. Batman, being his normal untrusting self, has come up with contingencies to stop all the meta humans if need be and created Brother Eye which is a satellite system which tracks all the meta humans. Lord somehow gets ahold of this technology, creates an army of OMACS to hunt down and kill the meta humans. He also uses his powers of mind controls to control Superman who is almost kills Batman and Wonder Woman until Wonder Woman realizes she has no choice but to kill Lord to stop it hence breaking their 'no kill' rule which significantly damages the relationships between her and BM, SM and the world.
- I REALLY hated Cheetah's face makeup at the end. I was thinking more of a Tigra look. Body wasn't bad but the face and hair...ugh.
- The ending. Great message conveyed and of course WW saves the day through compassion, love and truth, but you throw a great supervillain like Lord away by making him a sympathetic character it doesn't fit? Everyone renounces their wishes for the greater good? I tried to like it, but it seemed weak.

Soul
Pixar does it again , absolutely loved this movie. As per usual it's visually stunning and unique. It's incredibly poignant and thoughtful and even leaves you pondering your own self at the very end. I'd say it's easily one of the most maturely themed Pixar films but there is more than enough there with a number of great characters to keep the kids attention and pay attention.
Also incredible voice work , especially Fox.
I want to watch it again before I definitively rank it but I think it's going to be Top 4 Pixar for me , right up there with Toy Story 3 and Inside Out.
Definitely recommend it , to adults or children. I don't see how one could be disappointed.

Caught Soul, was a great little film, not quite Inside Out or Incredibles great, but still amazingly built start to finish.
Also saw Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and holy crap does Boseman take hostage every last scene he's in. He gives one hell of a powerful monologue, just an electric performance, at least he managed to go out in top form. Viola Davis similarly controls he scenes, and the sparks they throw off with each chewing the scenery in expert fashion. Absolutely fantastic top to bottom.

The Dry
Just saw this, fantastic film. Especially considering I’ve lived in two places like this and the everyone knowing everyone thing isn’t a movie convenience.
If you want a happy feel good movie, don’t see this. One of the darkest and full frontal films I’ve seen in awhile, especially for an Aussie movie. Good to see Eric Bana in a leading role again also.

I loved Soul too. Some of the best dialogue I can remember in a Pixar movie - felt a lot faster paced and more adult oriented than usual.
Looking forward to seeing The Dry. The book was great, although knowing the ending is never as satisfying.

About 1/2 thru WW84. I honestly find Diana's character in this outing anyway to be rather unlikable. She warmed up once she was reunited but there was certainly something off. Well back to it.

Caught Tenet, it was solid enough, though I can watch Inception, the Prestige, and Memento endlessly...can't say this is one I'd ever need to return to. Cast was strong top to bottom, some interesting visual scenes, just in total didn't find much very interesting. I literally can't remember anybody's name, and the movie ended less than 5 minutes ago. Not disappointed I watched it, but nothing there to call me back.

Pieces of a Woman is worth watching for a honestly quite spectacular performance by Vanessa Kirby who is now in must-watch territory for me. Overall it felt like a film that was trying a little bit too hard in that cinematic way, and it's a little bit icky to watch Shia LaBeouf in a role like that knowing what we know about him. Promising Young Woman will probably have plenty of haters but I really enjoyed the twists and turns, especially how disarming the romcom style middle section was from the whole storyline. I can't remember if there's many here that watched/enjoyed Killing Eve (think I remember talking to mikec about it), but it's the directional debut of Emerald Fennell who worked on that show and there's definitely a similar tone.

Watched Soul. It was good but not good enough to keep me awake so I missed some of it and will have to try again. I’m never a fan of hearing a cartoon is longer than 90 minutes, even when it’s good stuff. I’ll give it another shot eventually. I’ll give that movie a shot sometime @admin, I liked the first season of Killing Eve a lot.

I'd recommend Palm Springs as something a bit different from the typical romcom, and obviously especially if you like the Groundhog Day thing. I didn't think it was quite as good as the reviews but it's well worth a watch.
Plus One is probably the funniest romcom I've seen from the past couple of years, I find quite often the dialogue in these types of movies can be quite forced and unnatural, but I remember laughing out loud a lot at this one. I watched The Wedding Year more recently which is a very similar plot and it was nowhere near as good.

Nancy in two outing has edged very closer to overtaking Sidney in my eyes. She’s close, three is considered to be one of the best horror sequels of all time and I get why but it was also the start of MTV Freddy and I think it hurt the menace or the character long term. Going forward with the Alice trilogy is fun too , even if I don’t love 4&5 as much as others.

Watched A Nice Girl Like You on Netflix. Story of a 20 something year old who embarks on becoming less prudish after her bf leaves her.
So many things are things we ladies struggle to understand about life, sex and men and there were some definite LOL moments as she’s learning to embrace her sexual self. A chick flick but worth a watch if you dare.
