The Sessions was the first movie that came to mind, although I'm not sure if it'll sway Jeff since it's arguably John Hawkes' movie with both Hunt and Macy playing strong support roles.

Also, Cast Away and Pay It Forward. She play the volleyball? Now that you mention Wilson, I'm pretty sure she does do the voice acting for him. Also, Cast Away and Pay It Forward. Really? Three movies without mentioning Twister. I thought jTjohncenaGOAT was looking for movies where Helen Hunt acted well.

Rewatched Captain Marvel and boy is it fun. It’s flawed in the same way lots of MCU films are flawed in that set-pieces are the least interesting part of the film, but it just feels so fresh and different and fun. The 90s nostalgia is really great, Sam Jackson is having a ball, the opening is too long but the way we discover what’s happening as Danvers does is fantastic. And then I think Brie Larson is just fantastic. It’s really hard to read the huge amount of criticism of her in this role and anything other than sour grapes - but I find her so charming and so convincing and genuinely good fun. Don’t get the hate at all - the idea that she’s monotone just isn’t there in the film. She’s never over the top, but you can always see the struggle and confusion going on within her. I think it’s a really really good performance.

Agreed. I remember lots of people talking about Brie Larson being wooden. I didn't see it at all. She was kinda stoic but not in a wooden way. She played the role really well. Think she got some backlash about some comments she made about something or other prior to Captain Marvel being released and that soured some fans on her.

A lot of people just don't buy into female led movies as we saw with Ghostbusters and even some backlash to Fury Road which I almost didn't see because of all the internet murrmurring. Glad I dodged that miss.
I think it's a combination of that, Brie's comments about it not being for traditional comic fans (I think those were the comments) and fear that they were putting the rocket on her back in lieu of everything the MCU had built up until now.
And I think it had some good reviews, so that made those same fans ultra critical when watching to dismiss it. But I think the MCU hype is so intense that for a while every release was simply the best ever.
Where am I going? It was a good. Not the best MCU has to offer, but anything less than C tier is just being a dick about it.

Was it thereallt who had issues with how unrealistic the space travel in Captain Marvel was? And also that it was the cat monster that took Fury's eye?

I like the movie. The skrulls were fun. But I can see how it can be grating. You can't tell me the No Doubt "Just A Girl" song wasn't thrown in to be cheeky.
Also hoping the summoning brings him here to bash Scream!

But I just don’t understand the mindset that doesn’t mark out at just a girl. It’s a very cool moment.

Overall as a movie I would rate it about average. To be honest I thought Captain Marvel was better in Endgame than she was in her own movie. Definitely a better performance from Brie Larson in it.

Captain Marvel was perfectly watchable, just one of the least remarkable of the MCU films, not flat out bad like Thor 2, which is bottom of the barrel (dark world indeed)...but somewhere in the mix just above that. I'd put everything but Iron Man 2/3 and Age of Ultron easily above it.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with Captain Marvel. I thought it was well done and very enjoyable. Some of the issue is exactly what Ness said, many people will gripe about a female led movie still. Another issue is that it was different than what MCU watchers were expecting. Also, Captain Marvel for many is it is not the female led movie the fans wanted. They should have led with Black Widow YEARS before like they did with the male characters. Black Widow has a fascinating back story that ties into Winter Soldier's, but until Wonder Woman blew the block office away Marvel did not want to take the chance on a female led MCU movie. By the time that happened, they needed to tell Carol's story so it tied into their overall vision for the franchise.

I love, love, love Serendipity. Great pick up. I acquired it (completely legally) after getting rid of MOST of my DVD's and putting all my movies on a hard drive instead so I don't feel bad as I did buy it at one time and saw it in the theater.

By the time that happened, they needed to tell Carol's story so it tied into their overall vision for the franchise. I liked Captain Marvel, but I think Disney is trying a little too hard with the girl power message. I was completely okay with Captain Marvel with the occasional eye roll. Avengers endgame was pure cringe with the girl power scene Star Wars totally killed my love of the franchise with their SJW platform, completely enjoyed the character of Rey and a female Jedi... But all the other girl power characters were too much. I finally got around to WW84 having loved the original and I actually hated the hell out of the movie... Every single part of it. Even Gal Gadot who I had a crush on after the first movie is completely insufferable in this. I don't get people's horror at the vague rape accusations... I mean the whole movie is nonsense and what guy would feel abused after a night with wonder woman. I also want to say I enjoyed Ultron more on the second watch up until the city went into the air and then it was average. I really don't like Endgame at all for the record.

Most 80's comedies did not age well as yeah, the main characters are narcissistic who like to sexual assault people. Def did not hold up as well as many other films. And yeah felt bad for Cameron that he had an asshole friend who did not get his friend had severe depression.
Broderick was amazing in election if you missed it.
Age of Ultron was REALLY good until the final act.
I LOATHED Captain Marvel. Hate Larson's take on the character entirely. This was not the Carol Danvers of the comics at all that could lead the Avengers against all odds. She was basically a shit version of Superman. Then you get Larsen's ego that the character is a minority hero beyond criticism showing essentially how privileged she actually is. Fuck off Larson. People hated the character as they wanted Captain Danvers and she failed to hit it.
They will get their girl power show when they do Ms Marvel. Ms Marvel is a far more interesting character than Captain Marvel anyway. Jessica Jones already did the girl power shit that Larson claimed she was doing too but better.

Jessica Jones season 1 is as good as Comic Book shows get, but the follow up was awful because her sister sucks.
Daredevil still better though.

Season 3 was a lot better than 2, but since it was the end of the MCU Netflix stuff it was hard to get truly invested in it.

Why are we discussing TV shows in the movie thread? Trying to think back and catch up on the recent movies Wife & I kept trading off... She was meh on the original Terminator, so now I don't know if T2 will ever enter the rotation. Turn she wanted a rewatch of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Still so good. Then we both enjoyed Stuber well enough that I'd love seeing Kumil introduced into the MCU just to interact with Drax. I feel like there was another movie or two in there too, but can't remember them if there were. The Boys has pretty much taken over our lives.

Mom he didn't eat his green beans! You should see the movie Pixar made about me, where I pull hair and cook shit. That's one Pixar I rarely hear much about. It never gets mentioned among the best and certainly not lumped with things like Cars 2 and Bugs Life. You only hear it mentioned if someone is listing ALL the movies. It never seemed over enough on it's own in any way (good or bad). I don't really remember much about it. So was it just meh, or secretly underrated?

I think it’s a really really good performance. The critics came out, as Larson triggered the dweebs early on, when she made comments about her previous film, A Wrinkle in Time. And it not being for 40 year old white men. " Audiences are not allowed enough chances to read public discourse on these films by the people that the films were made for. I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work for him about A Wrinkle in Time. It wasn’t made for him. I want to know what it meant to women of color, to biracial women, to teen women of color, to teens that are biracial." It was taken out of context, naturally. As a core part of the MCU fanbase, are 40 year old white men. But as a response, if you begin making it about agenda ( girl power, diversity ) it will naturally attract critics. The world isn't opposed to female leads ie; Wonder Woman, Black Widow, Tomb Raider, Buffy, Xena, Rey Starwalker, Rouge One, The Wasp, Harley Quinn, The Hunger Games - all of which predate Captain Marvel. Similarly, if you begin giving Oscars out to movies for featuring people of colour and not for it's storytelling, direction or film making - as the awards are intended - you will attract criticism ( Black Panther wasn't even the best MCU movie that year )

And that is difference IMO. Both Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel were seen as feminist comic films, but Patty Jenkins did not feel the need to play up her feminist views by trashing people who did not Wonder Woman and Gal Gadot seemed to embrace all her fans. Instead they honored those who came before them, in particular Lynda Carter.
What Larson did basically try to make Captain Marvel into something it was not. Tank Girl did the feminist comic movie 25 years prior without compromise. The film was not some revolution for diversity in filmmaking that she was making it out to be. Listen to her, and her movie did more for diversity in films than Black Panther. Also it was really not anything that has not been done before.

Red Letter Media's recent Half In The Bag inspired me to check out Promising Young Woman, a Black Comedy starring Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Alison Brie and Laverne Cox. Carey Mulligan plays a 30-something lay about who still lives with her parents and spends her evenings going to clubs and acting blank-out drunk to see who will try and take advantage of her. Then right as things are about to get intimate, she turns the table and goes all Chris Hansen To Catch A Predator on them and makes them confront what they were about to do. You get the feeling it's the only solace she gets out of life anymore, until she runs into an old classmate from medical school played by Bo Burnham. Bo seems like a nice guy, but his appearance brings back a traumatic experience from medical school and Carey's character embarks on an elaborate revenge plot. It's one of those movies that takes some real twists and turns through out and you don't know what type of movie it is exactly right up until the end. It's one of those movies where the subject matter is extremely serious, but there's enough comedic elements from it getting too over-wrought and the characters are really likeable. Clancy Brown as Carey's father in particular seems like the perfect dad who is just trying to be as supportive as possible. With that said, it's Carey's movie and she did a wonderful job carrying the movie. It's a really fun cast though with a lot of television actors who were casted absolutely perfectly. I liked the presentation of the film as well. It kind of reminded me of Spring Breakers in some instances, except the male gaze is used to expose how uncool flabby 30-40 somethings are and the 2000s pop hits just show how stunted Carey's character is. I've gone as far as I can without spoiling it. If you're like me and all you needed was comparisons to the Heathers, you won't be disappointed. I know @admin was a fan, so I hope it gains some traction on here.
