So we watched Ghost last night. It'll hopefully please Big Pete (and perhaps Dr. Emperor) to learn... It was great! It wouldn't have replaced Pretty Woman on my 1990 draft roster, but I would've definitely been seeking to add it via either drama or wild card if still available. Although I guess I could've gone with it as blockbuster and PW as drama or wild card. Regardless, another hit. Now between Beep and Yoot getting me to finally check out Ghost and Roadhouse respectively, I'm starting to think I've been sleeping on Swayze all these years. I've only ever seen scenes of Point Break... Time to finally watch it in full? Also, time to finally put all my preconceived notions aside and watch Dirty Dancing with an open mind!?!?

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it, for my money, it's the best popcorn movie that has a little bit of everything.
What did you make of the possession scene? Was it inconsistent or had Sam trained his ghost form enough to possess Goldberg? Also is Wife signing you up for pottery classes once the vaccine rids this world of Covid?
Throw The Outsiders in there as well.

I think I side with you in that the possession of Whoopi was one of the more tolerable stretches. Orlando didn't seem to be some pro ghost to me; seemed like he just got worked up enough emotionally to impulsively leap at Whoopi, and then howboutdat you can possess someone with "the gift". Frankly, I thought it was interesting seeing what passing through a living person looked like from a ghost's perspective. Something I'd never thought of before. I imagine it's similar to what A-Train saw as he ran through Robin. Anyway, I was way more accepting of Sam possessing Whoopi since it felt less like a possession and more like an extension of her as his communication conduit. Wife had a really hard time being able to accept Whoopi looking and feeling and smelling like Swayze from Demi's POV though, and personally I would've died laughing had they cut to a shot or two of Demi and Whoopi in a loving near-sexual embrace. My biggest gripe with ghost physics were Sam's ability to beat Karl up sometimes but not other times, when his emotion level was presumably the same. Also, it's one thing to flick an empty soda can. Another entirely to uppercut a grown man across a room. But that's less an issue. I had more an issue with Whoopi sometimes looking at Sam and sometimes not. Maybe her echo location powers just came and went at random? Wish they'd been a little more consistent on both these nuances. But minor, minor gripes for me. Also, I would've loved seeing him go get in the Mustang with Karl, Karl taking off, then Sam just passing through the back of the car. But then that would've opened the Dr. Emperor can of worms about why don't ghosts pass through the floors they're standing on? And yes, after the movie, Wife pointed to the clay scene and essentially said "See? Something like that!" -_-

The Meteor Man...I use to watch this movie all the time when I was a kid. It's still a favorite of mine. I'm still waiting for the Meteor Man and Blank Man team up.

When Emp brought the scene up that's naturally what I presumed as well until I read on. I'm not going to lie, I always catch myself snickering through that scene, I just have to chalk it down to movie magic which is kind of the appeal of the movie. It sort of has that 80s/90s charm, some of it doesn't always hold up, but it's something you go along with to get through the story.
Just like any good Big Fish story really.

I'm not a fan of Dr. Emperor being the token second lover of Ghost. I don't even have a bad thing to say about it.

The Little Things
I expected so much from this and it was so.... blah. The performances are fine and Denzel is Denzel but in a serial killer mystery movie to be this boring is a crime in itself. Leto gets the biggest shoutout.
Overall it feels like someone wanting to do a Fincher movie with 1/10 the talent or vision of Fincher.
4/10. This director should retire.

Like Seven and Zodiac had a love child and we found out later on that Fincher wasn’t the father. Just bad stuff.

Yeah I had Seven vibes throughout and thought they would give us something big at the end, but they didn't. Just that red hair clip. Heartbroken to watch probably the worst Denzel and DiCaprio movie back to back as they are my 2 favorite actors.

Months? You are never going to hear the end of it.
7 years later...
Kid: I'll pick a movie. Mrs. Kid: Oh, no you won't. I had to sit through that shitty Denzel movie and then the shitshow that was Once Upon A Time in America back to back. I'LL pick the movie, you go bathe the kids. Good try though!

Did you bring her to Schindler’s List on your first date? Nah but to be fair; she bought me to a play called RENT when I was a bad ass 17-18 year old and well; we all know what the fuck that shit is all about. Luckily for her; she didn't know what it was about either because I was not cool with it.

For those that care.
I (sort of) had a say in tonight’s movie with the wife.
Watched War Dogs and it was a fucking blast. Douchebag Jonah Hill is the best kind of Jonah Hill.

Just watched another Red Letter Media recommendation, The Kid Detective. It's about this former child celebrity still solving all these really small cases in his 30s. He's sort of this pathetic figure who's got nothing going on in his life until one day this high school girl asks him to solve her boyfriend's murder. Adam Brody plays the detective and what I like about his performance is how well he's able to balance the comedic and dramatic elements. It would have been so easy for him to act eccentric, but he plays this burn-out who obviously feels embarrassed by what he's doing but he doesn't know any better. It leads to a lot of dry humour which worked for the tone of the movie. It's part murder-mystery, but it's also a character study and we learn very early on in the movie that Brody is still dealing with the disappearance of his best friend who disappeared at the peak of his popularity. He vowed he wouldn't quit until he solved her case and it's one of those plot points the movie keeps dreding up.
It's one of those movies where the final act bumped it up several notches. I was enjoying myself enough, but it left a strong impression and now I'm itching to watch it again.
I'd put it in the same category as Brick and Under The Silver Lake. I really need to find a more popular comparison piece, but basically an incompetent detective gets caught up in a serious case and things get real.
EDIT: I'll have to throw Mystery Team onto the watch-list since RLM compared it to that.

Just watched Interview with the Vampire for the first time. Loved the ending, and also the climax with Louis revenging on all those old world vampires. Especially taking the scythe to Santiago. Good shit, pal. And that chick they sacrificed during the play... Noice tiddies n bush.

Man I wish they did that film as the proper trilogy it should have been with The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned. All three together are one of the best vampires stories written. Memnoch the Devil was pretty fucking crazy as well and should have been the end of the series.

The wife (and as jTjohncenaGOAT said not Wife or Jeff’s wife....) picked a movie tonight. The Lie- An Amazon Original movie. I’ll make this short and sweet. Watch it. Especially as a parent. The first 90 minutes might not be the greatest thing ever but it’ll give you anxiety. However; the final 5 minutes makes it ALL WORTH IT. I wish I could say more but WHAT. A. FINISH!

The Hate U Give
Fucking incredible.
I know I suffer pretty bad from recency bias, but that definitely makes my Top 100. Probably pretty high too. New favorite parents from a movie too. The fact the lead doesn't have an Oscar is insane. And major kudos to Falcon for going from a beloved Avenger to playing such a terrifying menace. I cannot recall the last time I've been so impacted by a movie. Heavy. Hard. Haunting. Incredible. Infinitely recommend.

Sat down for Zero Dark Thirty the other night during one of the early torture scenes and was like “well I haven’t seen it for a while so I may as well stick around because the last 30 minutes is terrific”. I’d forgotten just how long it was between the beginning and the last 30 minutes. But in three sit downs I watched it again and generally agree with my previous feeling, it’s a solid but overlong movie with a terrific conclusion.
