Is Anatomy of a Fall the only movie that hasn't been in theatres yet System ? It comes out tomorrow and was one of my more anticipated movies of last year.
EDIT: Let's look into this.
I don't think American Fiction is getting a theatrical release here, it appears to be coming to Amazon in late February. That may change and some of the more prestige theatres may give it a limited run. Zone of Interest also appears to be getting a limited theatrical run as well in late February. There's enough time to catch everything before but in the case of American Fiction & Maestro it's kind of frustrating that you have to have different streaming platforms to watch it.

Will have to do the “which of these movies are streaming?” searches later. Of the bigger nominees I’ve only seen Holdovers (meh), Batrbie (cute but lost me somewhere), and Killers of the Flower Moon (thumbs up).

I agree with you on both Holdovers and Barbie, but I'd like to get your thoughts on Killer of the Flower Moon. c and System didn't seem to care for it. I found it focused more on the white men than it did The Osage even though I know Scorsese said he reworked the film to make it less 'white'. I get the book was from a white man's perspective so maybe it's an unfair criticism.

Anyone that thinks the female talent need to receive nominations because of the theme of the film - and not the performance - are losing the point of awards.

For anyone who is interested, I was suggested the book Mean Spirit by Linda Hogan (no, not that one) to read from one of my friends who lives on an Indigenous reservation here. She says that I might enjoy it more than Killers of the Flower Moon as it focuses more on the Indigenous POV and plight of The Osage. Apparently, she is a Chickasaw author and Mean Spirit was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and I'd never heard of her. She wrote it 30 years ago. And yet David Gann's novel written in 2017 gets turned into an Oscar nominated movie.

Fair enough, but the people freaking about Ken are absurd. Ryan Gosling didn’t beat Margot for a nomination, Five other women did. So people bitching are just saying another woman is less deserving than Margot.

I’d be pissed if I was Leo. I don’t like him but honestly his performance was much more deserving of a nomination over RG.

I get the book was from a white man's perspective so maybe it's an unfair criticism. I don’t think you’re wrong, I just don’t really think of that as a criticism of the movie, or maybe I feel like they chose the better of two paths in that regard. With a different director and in a different time this is a story of the great white lawmen from Washington coming in to save the Indians when they couldn’t save themselves and we leave feeling all good and well about the greatness of the FBI. I think the end of the movie (which I didn’t love at first) shows that they are aware that these stories get recreated from that POV and even identified the futility of the FBI’s work, these people weren’t incarcerated long for trying to murder the Osage, they had lives after. I have found a lot of the conversation around the movie to be interesting, the truth and fiction of the story, the (probably bad) choice to try to make Leo’s character appear like he cared for her at all while systematically killing her and her whole family, etc. I don’t know that I have any deep takeaway, just found the movie entertaining enough and it told an interesting story. It was my favorite I’ve seen so far this year, but I haven’t seen much I really liked this year so that’s not accomplishing too much.

There is quite a few films I haven’t had a chance to see yet - because woo Australia BUT so far this is what I’m predicting:
Best Picture - Oppenheimer (I’m expecting it to clean up tbh)
Best Actor - Cillian Murphy, as much as I love Paul Giamatti and adored The Holdovers. Cillian is just brilliant and absolutely deserves the award.
Best Actress - I haven’t seen 3 of these movies, and out of the 2 I have seen I don’t think either of them really deserve the nomination. I suspect Lily Gladstone will pick up the win
Best supporting Actor - I haven’t seen American Fiction but I know Sterling K. Brown is a phenomenal actor so would love to see him win, based on what I’ve seen though I expect Robert Downey Jr to pick it up.
Best supporting actress - Again haven’t seen 2 of these, I would love for Da’Vine Joy Randolph to win as I really don’t think Emily Blunt or America Ferrera deserved the nomination.
Best Director - Without question Christopher Nolan deserves the win. Ridiculous Greta Gerwig didn’t get a nomination though.
Animated - The Boy and The Heron!!!
Adapted - Would love Barbie to win this, but I suspect Oppenheimer will claim it too
Original - I have only seen 2 of these films. I hated Past Lives so anything but that tbh 😂 but really would love The Holdovers to win - incredible movie which deserves more love.
Visual Effects - Godzilla Minus One 😁
Cinematography/Original Score/Film Editing/Sound - ALL TO OPPENHEIMER
Original Song - If I’m just Ken wins this, I’ll piss myself laughing. Can’t wait to see Ryan Gosling to perform it.
Will definitely try and watch the movies I’ve missed before the Oscars, but I suspect the above won’t change.

Going off that, I don't think Ryan Gosling or America Ferrera deserve their nominations either. I am in the camp that didn't particularly appreciate the film or find either of their performances Oscar worthy. I'd have nominated Margot Robbie or Kate McInnon over either of them. Fair enough, but the people freaking about Ken are absurd. Ryan Gosling didn’t beat Margot for a nomination, Five other women did. So people bitching are just saying another woman is less deserving than Margot. From what I am reading a lot of people think Robbie deserved a nomination over Benning. I'll have to take their word for it because I don't plan on watching Nyad. Obviously without actually watching the movie I can't form an opinion, I'm just relaying what I am reading. So the outrage isn't just that she didn't get a nomination and it's rather ironic given the theme of the movie, but that there's at least one nominee that a lot of people feel she was better than. And Gosling is for sure deserving. He was excellent in that movie and showed even more range than Robbie did. America Ferrera kind of stands out to me though. Either that category was weak this year or they threw her in there to make sure at least one woman from the movie got nominated. Her performance was meh at best. The real kicker will be if "I'm Just Ken" wins over "What Was I Made For?" It already won the Golden Globe and everyone freaked out, if it wins the Oscar too that will drive people nuts. The satirical incel anthem winning over the heartfelt actual theme of the movie twice would melt the internet.

I’ve been really let down by the nominees I’ve seen this year. Oppenheimer was very good, but the third act was too long and it lost its momentum somewhat. Barbie was a two hour-long commercial with some ham-fisted anti-patriarchy stuff that had the subtlety of a shovel to the face - not an Oscar film. Killers of the Flower Moon was solid, but unspectacular, and didn’t earn its length. Maestro was technically excellent but put me to sleep. I am really excited to watch the Holdovers, I just need to find time to see it.
I’m surprised De Niro isn’t getting more talk for his performance in Killers. I preferred it over Downey’s Strauss, though both were very good.

American Fiction and Holdovers are the best films on this list, followed by Oppenheimer.

Bummed for Lily Gladstone, though her being in Best Actress felt like a bit of poor category strategy, she’s absent for a great deal of the movie.

Oppenheimer is a good winner. Having seen all the films now I would probably put Anatomy of a Fall is my #1, but I really enjoyed Oppenheimer and would have had it top three. Btw how much champagne did Al have? That was a terrible way to announce it!

Holy shit that blowout for Killers of Flower Moon.
Also film I cared about won, with Godzilla Minus One getting their effects award.
And agree Gladstone should have been supporting actress not lead since she clearly was not the lead of that film.
Not shocking Oppenheimer swept really, it was hard Oscar bait. And everyone killed their roles in it. Cool to see Frontline get a win too. Really need to see Poor Things. Lanthimos is a director that usually makes movies worth seeing, even if they not entirely things you like seeing. Neither Lobster or The Killing of a Sacred Deer are movies I will enjoy watching multiple times, but both were worth seeing once.
