@admin correctly guessed the #2 album on my list so going through Tribe’s discography. Will be a hidden album in these reviews too, is a 1991 debut . Guess the album and I’ll review a discography of your choice (15 albums max). Are you a fan of this group & if so what is your favourite album?

1. Low End Theory 2.Midnight Marauders 3.People's Instinctive Travels 4.Beats, Rhymes, and Life.
I haven't heard the other two albums.
Tribe was one of the soundtracks to my high school years, especially Low End Theory.

People’s Instinctive Travels and The Paths of Rythm (1990) Runtime: 64:15 Tracklist 1. "Push it Along" 7:42 2. "Luck of Lucien" 4:32 3. "After Hours" 4:39 4. "Footprints" 4:00 5. "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" 4:06 6. "Pubic Enemy" 3:45 7. "Bonita Applebum" 3:50 8. "Can I Kick It?" 4:11 9. "Youthful Expression" 4:52 10. "Rhythm (Devoted to the Art of Moving Butts)" 4:01 11. "Mr. Muhammad" 3:33 12. "Ham 'n' Eggs" 5:27 13. "Go Ahead in the Rain" 3:54 14. "Description of a Fool" 5:41 I’m somewhat familiar with ATCQ which I’ll get to later, I really enjoy Q-tip’s verses when he has a feature though I always confuse him with Schoolboy Q initially even though they are both very different MCs. I had no idea this album existed, people hype up The Low End Theory so much I always figured it was their debut. I bought Sandra a bike for V-day (among other things) to replace a bike she got elsewhere as a gift as it’s too high. So I figured I’ll pay for them to have it assembled and then ride the bike back to my place. They tell me the chain isn’t on if that’s ok (they gave me a great discount and waived the assembly fee so I didn’t argue). No dramas I’ll just put the chain back on. Could I get the chain back on properly? No  According to google it’s a 55 min walk to my place from said shop but I walk pretty fast so normally 30 mins or so. So I decided just to push this thing uphill all the way home in the midday heat and I hadn’t eaten or had anything to drink all day. Idiotic move. Finally get to a servo and get a drink to stop myself from collapsing. I made it home safe to continue this discography. So as far soundtracks for this scenario goes this was pretty good. Luck of Lucien is a fun track. Even thought I’ve heard Can I Kick it before (not knowing it was on this album) and enjoy it but thought I bumped Lou Reed’s transformer back on again due to the sample. Ham N Eggs is probably my least favourite track (or Bonita Applebum) but go Ahead in the rain and Description of a fool really remedy that. The end of I left my wallet in El Segundo gets a bit grating too. Like a lot of releases from this era it’s fairly bloated and doesn’t get down to the nitty gritty but still a very solid and promising debut. Rating 7/10

Low End Theory here. I studied a lot of Q-Tip's shit getting into DJing. Dude is a genius in terms of production and is very good at breaking shit down so it is easy to understand what he is doing. Seen him do a killer routine to In the Hall of the Mountain King once mixing hip hop at the start then moving into drum and bass and scratches as it speed up. Insane to see him beat match it.
Quest is one of the most underrated groups IMO.
///
Thinking of it now, Midnight Marauders was the disc that taught me about EQing, against after listening to Q-Tip about how he did the drums for it. While many bands were pumping bass, he tried to tame in the intense drum sounds and put them deeper into the mix. Would also take more subtle drums and pump them up to the lead. Dude really was a master of production, and to my teenage self trying to self teach all this a fucking godsend in how he clearly he would talk about mixing. Lord knows how many others used him to get into music production. Like I did not listen to hip hop until I got into music making shit. Techno musicians did not sit down and do the how to scratch and produce music shit, but him and some other hip hop guys would go over their tracks and shit in interview and Tip IMO was the best in the tape trade era.

"Jazz (We've Got)" Davis, Muhammad, Taylor 4:10 12. "Skypager" Davis, Muhammad, Taylor 2:12 13. "What?" Davis 2:29 14. "Scenario" (featuring Busta Rhymes, Charlie Brown and Dinco D) Davis, Bryan Higgins, James Jackson, Muhammad, Trevor Smith, Taylor 4:10
While I like this album I’ve listened to before in the past after seeing it on multiple best albums ever lists. I didn’t remember anything about other than I wasn’t a huge fan so I re-listened. That was yesterday and I just re-listened again because I took minimal notes and nothing greatly stood out to me. The Infamous Date Rape has a good message but delivered in a very awkward manner, like the infamous Kelly Osbourne clip. Excursions is a good opening track and Jazz is a very chill track but to be honest this doesn’t really stand out in the discography for me. Rating 6/10

Midnight Marauders (1993)
Runtime: 51:12 Track List
1. "Midnight Marauders Tour Guide" Jonathan Davis, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Malik Taylor 0:45 2. "Steve Biko (Stir It Up)" Davis, Muhammad, Taylor 3:11 3. "Award Tour" (featuring Trugoy the Dove) Davis, Muhammad, Taylor 3:46 4. "8 Million Stories" Davis, Muhammad, Taylor, Skeff Anselm 4:30 5. "Sucka N****" Davis, Muhammad, Taylor, Freddie Hubbard 4:05 6. "Midnight" (featuring Raphael Wiggins) Davis, Muhammad, Taylor 3:49 7. "We Can Get Down" Davis, Muhammad, Taylor 4:19 8. "Electric Relaxation" Davis, Muhammad, Taylor 4:04 9. "Clap Your Hands" Davis, Muhammad, Taylor, Bob James, Leo Nocentelli, George Porter Jr., Cyril Neville, Joseph Modeliste 3:16 10. "Oh My God" (featuring Busta Rhymes) Davis, Muhammad, Taylor 3:29 11. "Keep It Rollin'" (featuring Large Professor) Davis, Muhammad, Taylor, William Mitchell 3:05 12. "The Chase, Part II" Davis, Muhammad, Taylor, Steve Arrington, Victor Godsey, Buddy Hankerson 4:02 13. "Lyrics to Go" Davis, Muhammad, Taylor 4:09 14. "God Lives Through" Davis, Muhammad, Taylor 4:15
I was today years old when I found out Q-Tip’s real is Johnathan Davis. For a split second reading the album credits I thought Jonathan Davis took time out of his busy Korn schedule to help Quest write. Korn have had plenty of hip-hop collabs so I didn’t question it nor the spelling. Enough about Korn, this 3rd release is among my favourites of the discography. Much like the hidden album the text to speech sounding voice effect helps theme the album and space it out without becoming too obnoxious. The album flows together really well from Steve Biko onwards, Electric Relaxation has some awful bars but Clap your hands washes it away. The Chase Part II is my favourite track on the album and things close off very strong with God Lives Through. Rating 8/10

Did not like Low End Theory? GET THE TORCHES!!!
Check the Rhime was one of my favorite tracks to spin as it paired so well with so many other things. Which I think is why Tip mixed it the way he did.

"Word Play" Fareed, Taylor, Mills, Yancey 2:59 15. "Stressed Out" (featuring Faith Evans) Fareed, Muhammad, Mills, Faith Evans, Yancey, Gary Taylor 4:57
“Rockin' since Kiss My Dick was kickin' that Peachfuzz Cuz, you might be on drugs”’ A slightly more aggressive Quest with great tracks like “Phony Rappers” & “Motivators” while still having great production and still having a sense of humour. The same style people have grown to love but has been slightly tweaked and worked on, the whole release flows incredibly well together and “The Jam” was the only track I didn’t care for but it’s not outright bad by any stretch. Stressing Out with Faith Evans is a fantastic closing track. Doesn’t have the bloating of the debut and tracks stood out to me more than Low End Theory, loved it. Rating 9/10

"Rock Rock Y'all" (featuring Punchline, Jane Doe, Wordsworth & Mos Def) Fareed, Muhammad, Taylor, Rashaan Truell, Latania Morris, Vinson Johnson, Dante Smith, Charles Wright, James Gadson 4:17
Why didn’t Busta Rhymes just became an official member of the group? He seems featured as much as Muhammad is and probably had more album time than Jarobi  Always has great features though. Again produced by The Ummah I’d think this would be right up my alley but this was the only release I just simply don’t like. I enjoy Stepping it Up but tracks like Da Booty, His Name is Mutty Ranks & Hot 4 U kill it for me. It feels uninspired and much more of the same just more dull after five albums. I didn’t expect them to do a Morbid Angel but it seemed like instead of going through some trial n error and trying something new it’s more of the same. Rating 4/10

I thought I already fully reviewed this album when I did the top 10 albums of the decade thread. I didn’t but I did post this in early 2020: Neither stance has changed. Released 18 years after The Love Movement you expect this to be a nice nostalgia pop but nothing like the glory days especially as there was heat in the group. After performing briefly on Kanye’s “Yeezus” Tour and performing on Jimmy Fallon they decided to get back together to record this album. They managed to pull this off despite Phife Dawg’s ailing health and eventual passing away before its release. And they didn’t just pull it off as in they turned in a passable paper they turned in an A+ album. While their roots are still evident this doesn’t feel out of place at all for 2016 and could be excused for being a contemporary act. All group members are firing on all cylinders as are the features including the 808 man Kanye West and unofficial member Busta Rhymes. According to the world’s most reliable website Wikipedia, Phife Dawg chose the album title and the group went with despite not knowing its meaning. To me I thought it meant a thank you to all the hip-hop artists holding the torch while Quest were away and a basically “thank you, we’ll have our throne back now” deal but I could be wrong. I listen to this album a lot, the first two tracks especially and thank those of you on PW who voted for in it the aforementioned thread for bringing it to my attention. Rating 10/10
