Fast X
Wow. What a pile of shit. I love the first one, the original. It's a classic. 2F2F and Tokyo Drift are guilty pleasures and Fast 5 is a ride... but this is the most absolute ridiculous one yet. It's not the worst, just the most ridiculous, almost a parody of the genre at this point. A game of one-upmanship with previous entries.
Han looks bored the entire movie, like he simply didn't want to be there. Someone googled hacking and Ramsey is channelling Kate Libby the entire movie with her ' Hacker ' jacket. Cena hams it up, despite being the only likeable character. Brie Larson, I'm convinced only has one mode - smirk and make witty comments. Helen Mirren and Jason Stathman show up to add little to the mix.
Oh, then there's Aqua Man who chews the scenery unlike anything I've seen in a long time, he goes from being " the devil " in one scene to almost unexplainably flamboyant the next and stays there the entire movie. It's almost laughable at times.
File it under comedy.

Thought Rebel Moon was fine, perfectly serviceable Star Wars knock-off. Was mostly just moving pieces onto the board and setting up the backstory, hopefully the second has more momentum.
Though it doesn’t make sense that it was pitched to us as “R-Rated Star Wars” to lead with a PG-13 version, my only thought is Netflix trying to get its own “Snyder Cut” hype train, as that was clearly meant to be the primary version when it’s what was sold to us initially.

Poor Things
If Wes Anderson made Simple Jack. Behind all the stylistic flair and philosophical conversations this film has it’s just a film making fun of a mentally ill person, she is the butt of all jokes. Basically big bang theory humour
If that isn’t bad enough it’s basically a pro pedo film, the main character has the mind of a child and regular engages in sexual acts with adult men and the film does very little to disavow said behaviour.
Disgusting film, put me off Yorgos Lanthimos‘ whole filmography
Anyone but you
Fun light hearted run of the mill comedy. Never seen Sydney (the place not the actress) romanticised so much
Salaar Part 1: Ceasefire
If you think Zack Snyder is the king of the slow-mo wait until you watch this, first half is better than the second when it suddenly becomes a huge conflict but still a fun yet drawn out action film. Even with an intermission this felt Longer than Animal despite being 30 minutes shorter.

Barbie - I wanted to like this movie. No, I wanted to LOVE this movie. I loved the sets, wardrobe and attention to details because they waxed nostalgic for me, but the storyline seemed to fall flat for me. It definitely was not the man hating movie so many said it was, in fact I felt like it focused more on Ken than Barbie and while I appreciated what it tried to convey and the great acting, I found myself feeling quite 'meh' at the end. You may now get the pitchforks. Haunting in Venice - I have been loving these great ensemble cast mysteries and this one was no exception. I figured out the weapon fairly quickly but it left me wondering until the end. Kenneth Branaugh's Poirot is as always compelling, Michelle Yeoh is fantastic as was Tina Fey. See How They Run - Another ensemble cast 'who done it' with a fantastic premise and cast and quite a bit more cheeky than the Agatha Christie/Kenneth Branaugh films. Sam Rockwell has always been an underrated actor IMO, but honestly Saoirse Ronan steals the show. Highly enjoyable. If you want to know about any new/Hallmark Christmas movies feel free to ask, pretty sure I saw them all.

When Evil Lurks - brutal, uncomfortable, perfect slow burn horror. Not for the easily offended, go in without researching anything and put aside an hour or 2 afterwards to just feel like shit.
Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor - love me some found footage and big fan of the previous hell house movies so I went in with high expectations...was not let down. Good build up, fun lore and near perfect execution. The only thing I can ding them on is the main character had no redeeming qualities to the point i cant even remember her name...

Next Goal Wins:
First film of 2024!
Admittedly I’m a Taika Waititi hater but this was much up his alley then forcing his humour into stuff like Thor. Funny moving sports film, which you’ve seen many similar films like this but was a great take on this story.
Helped I didn’t know the results of the cup either.

Terminator 2 : Judgement Day.
Yeap, it's over 30 years old. But, I caught this on TV last night in 4K and I'm still at awe, even more so now, over 30 years later at how sharp and good this still looks. Sure, there's some awkward CGI here and there, but even just the slow scenes are razor sharp, especially the low lit scenes with the blue hue.
Arnold just popped up on the news as I was typing this, The Matrix is real.. they're listening to our thoughts.

Ferrari:
If you didn’t like how much Napoleon focused on his relationship rather than accomplishments you probably won’t like this either. An ok film, I’m not a car enthusiast and even I was disappointed about how little focus this had on the cars and racing in comparison.

Night Swim:
Fun creative film for the first 2/3 and then the third act just became generic horror film 101. Felt like studio interference as if audiences wouldn’t get what they were going for without a distinct visual aid.

Mean Girls (2024)
This is an adaption of the stage play which in itself is obviously an adaption of the 2004 film, which I think is a 10/10 film.
Why? Because it’s a great satire of the times, Paris Hilton and co being heavily promoted being stick thin and a very material lifestyle which the plastics can obviously be compared to. No safe spaces or body positivy moment nor people wearing crocs & pimple patches fashionably. I’m not going on a “kids these days are soft” rant I’m just pointing out this story just doesn’t work as a Gen Z adaption when societal norms in high school have drastically changed in 20 years.
Mild spoilers ahead:
====
Anything remotely offensive about the original has been cut or altered, no jokes about Cady being white and from Africa, the story of Regina spreading rumours of Janice being a lesbian heavily altered and of course no hard R’s being dropped. Not saying I wanted this film to be “edgy” but it was like it walking on eggshells the entire time.
It’s like how The Sopranos is eventually set after 9/11 and it shows the government agency’s waning interests in the mafia as they are more concerned with terrorist attacks, that element of the story just doesn’t work if it was set in the 90s for example.
Mean girls is a story very much tied to the culture of the early 2000s and there’s no getting around that.
Not fetch

The Holdovers
Absolutely beautiful bittersweet film, both visually and narratively. 10/10 loved it, worth the wait for it to open in Australia
The Beekeeper
If you seen a Jason Statham action film you’ve seen this, some cool kills though.

The Iron Claw Brilliant. sandylea gives me flack for never crying in movies, not that I don’t feel for characters but it’s just never occurred. This finally broke me. I’ll assume most posters here at least somewhat familiar with the Von Erich story but doesn’t lessen the blow at all. Brilliant performances all around, I even saw on IMDb a guy saying he knew the family back in the day and it was spot on. I’m not going to deduct a point but the only very slight issue I had was with the guy planning Ric Flair. Which to be fair Ric Flair has a very hard voice to pull off (unless you’re Jay Lethal) and doesn’t sound like anywhere in the US to my Australian ears, unlike the southern accents you hear throughout the film. Again this is because I’ve seen much more media of Ric Flair than the Von Erich’s. Not just an incredible wrestling film but a film that explores family dynamics and the pressure men feel not to share their emotions. Rating 10/10 PriscillaYes this only opened in Australia today too. If you’re a big Elvis fan I’m not judging as someone who has been a fan of many cancelled artists. It didn’t help that everyone in the cinema felt like talking through this, people in the aisle across from us were talking so we moved. We move down only for kids in the aisle to talk and carry on. Which you can take your kids to this film but why? They obviously don’t want to watch a drawn out biopic. So the interesting part of this film was the beginning showing Elvis use the child groomer handbook “she’s so mature for her age” to get his hands on Priscilla and depicts Elvis as an all around awful guy. I know times were different but that’s questionable behaviour even back then. Which I’m glad a film is finally doing a biopic on someone reflecting their life in a negative life, even though the film is called Priscilla she had no identity outside of Elvis as the film explores. The facts of the film have been debated as Priscilla has claimed the book she wrote is full of lies so the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. But after that, the film just wasn’t interesting. Will it appeal to big Elvis fans? No as fans of the person rather than the music will like much more flattering depictions like the 2022 film. Will it appeal to Jacob Elordi fans that just want to simp over him after Euphoria,Saltburn or the kissing booth? I doubt it because Elvis is again depicted as a POS. And if you want a brutal condemnation of Elvis, this pulls its punches as by all most reports he was even much worse than this film depicts. Also I personally don’t care but a lot of fans were upset that Elordi is significantly taller than Elvis was, however I think that helped the power dynamic in showing how increasingly powerless Priscilla was in the relationship. It’s just an interesting idea executed poorly. I’ve only seen Lost in Translation and The Bling Ring of Sofia’s work the former which I loved and the second indifferent to but I really think this was a swing and a miss. This finished and the mother of the rat children exclaims “the Elvis movie was better!!” I didn’t even like this film and was incredibly frustrated at how badly she missed the point. Rating 4/10

Night Swim: I went and saw this with the Wife, I thought it was decent at best. Honestly, it’s not bad, I would just recommend watching it on a streaming service instead of in theatres. Five Nights at Freddy’s I also gave this a watch last night, it’s definitely the better of the two movies. I’ve never played the games before, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying the film.

This could have been a brilliant 90 minute comedy but I feel like there’s two unwritten rules in Indian Cinema
1. Must include singing and dancing (which this does) 2. Run time has to be at minimum 2h 30m but aim for 3h or more.
First half before the intermission is such a hilarious and blizzare film. Evil corporation is using an alien material causing said E.T. to come to earth. Meanwhile farmer goes into debt because he refuses to use pesticide on his crops so he goes to Chennai to find work. He then ends up working for a hopeless surprise birthday company and bumping into the E.T. which they nickname “tattoo” as he doesn’t like being called an alien.
Closest film I can compare this to is Men in Black but even that’s a stretch. The second half just devolved into generic action movie stuff sadly.

Force of Nature: The Dry 2
I’m guessing this awkward title is to avoid confusion with Force of Nature (2020) and let fans of The Dry know this is connected. It’s hardly a sequel though as the only continuation is Aaron Falk (Eric Bana) is on another case as a detective. So I feel like people will skip this if they haven’t seen The Dry.
Anyway as for the actual film it’s brilliant, mystery film so I won’t give away too much. Characters are frustrating but very realistic as a company go to a wilderness retreat as a team building exercise between colleagues and it goes horribly wrong.
I have one minor complaint but it’s a spoiler so otherwise they did a great job with this story. The Australian wilderness setting is great for this also as not only the infamous Australian wildlife to deal with but just the sheer amount of area it covers and the shots a great job of establishing how royally screwed you could be if you got lost in these types of places.

Wonderfully unserious, great music, good story, just really solid all-round. Much better than Tim Burton’s effort to reinvent the tale.

The Beekeeper I went and saw this with the Wife, nothing groundbreaking or anything, but it’s a Jason Statham action flick, so you know at the very least, it’s a good popcorn movie. Still though, out of the two movies that I’ve seen this year (the other being Night Swim), this was definitely my favorite of the two. 2024 Films SeenNight Swim The Beekeeper System, we're almost a month into the new year, so you've probably seen what 10 - 12 new movies already? One of these years, I'll get around to seeing more movie releases than you have. Is it too late for a New Year's resolution? It's still early enough that I suppose it'll still be doable.

Argylle I can’t really share my thoughts without spoiling it so I’ll just put it this way …… This is the cinematic equivalent of Metal Gear Solid 2’s release br]
Dua Lipa, John Cena are hardly in the film. Henry Cavill is to an extent but definitely not the most featured actor.
It’s a massive bait and switch with Sam Rockwell being the main character and only portrayed as “Argylle” (Henry Cavill) at times.
I liked it but it’s just got too ridiculous at times.

The Boy and The Heron (Hayao Miyazaki, 2023)
Much like Spirited Away and many Studio Ghibli films, the story centres on a young child who stumbles upon a quest in a mysterious magical world. In this case, many worlds. As you'd expect, full marks for animation, sound and music. The cinematography is perfection as one expects from Studio Ghibli.
I enjoyed The Boy and The Heron, but it falls short of peak Ghibli. The world building and characterisation is underdeveloped, throughout most of the film I felt confused: for every small question that's answered, several bigger ones are asked in the same breath. With that in mind, most of the first act was unnecessary, it takes far too long for Mahito to enter the various dimensions in which the story takes place. That time could have been better spent expanding on the multiverse.
The Heron is an interesting character - a villainous entity at the start, The Boy's friend at the end. What drives the Heron to be either heel or babyface? As we learn near the end, he serves The Wizard, an aged gentleman whose job is to keep the multiverse in balance by stacking a set of stones and ensuring they don't fall over. Deep stuff. The Wizard desires to recruit Mahito to be his successor, so he sends The Heron to Mahito's universe to fetch him. As we learn, The Heron is not as competent as he first seeems. He tries to bait Mahito (The Boy) through the fraudulent(?) promise of taking him to his deceased mother, but when Mahito overpowers him, he reluctantly becomes his companion.
Apart from The Heron, characters are introduced on a whim with little explanation as to what motivates them to behave how they do. This plague even impacts one of the title characters. Mahit, mirrors Spirited Away's Chihiro in his single-minded doggedness to find his presumably deceased mother, but without any of Chihiro's charm and wamrth. His childhood was traumatic as depicted in the WWII opening scene, but a scene of a dream causing Mahito to cry is not enough to endear me to a character who is otherwise grim, stoic, unmoved by anything or anyone. His quest becomes blurred when he starts to care more about finding Natsuko, his mother's pregnant replacement who he doesn't much care for, than his actual mother. He then stumbles upon a similarly-aged young lady called Himi who turns out to be his mother, or something? I don't know, I was lost. My point is that the story is confusing, and I haven't even touched upon other substantial plot arcs that are similarly perplexing.
Overall, good, not great. It was an entertaining experience but not one I'd ever revisit.

So I like to go in to most films knowing as listen as possible, all I knew is this had some award buzz and Natalie Portman was in it.
If I knew what this film was about I would not have purchased a ticket. At least the woman this film is inspired by died of cancer.
The film acknowledges that the main character isn’t a good person but treats the fact she is a child rapist as a mild character flaw. It mildly acknowledges that the victim suffered trauma (despite the character and real person not believing so) but considering the stuff Hollywood allegedly gets up to this came across as sickening rather than an honest look at this crime.
Could still go for the method acting and the flaws associated with playing a bad person with Portman’s character (in the film) without all the pedo stuff.
