For over a decade one wrestling question has been asked far more than any other- "Which promotion is superior- WWF or WCW?" That debate has grown stronger than ever over the past year with WCW mounting their strongest challenge yet to WWF supremacy. WCW took the fight to WWF by debuting Monday Nitro and it has only escalated from there with WCW taking a page out of WWF's historic playbook by poaching talent from the rival organization. The time for talk is finally at an end. After years of speculation, the two promotions have at last decided to settle the age old debate by meeting in the ring with promotional supremacy on the line.
Practically every major US city put in a bid for this historic supercard. In the end it came down to Baltimore, Philadelphia & Chicago with Baltimore winning out due to both promotions having history and strong fanbases in the Mid-Atlantic city and surrounding area.
The two promotions agreed on an 8 match card with 2 tag matches and 6 singles matches. This meant only 10 wrestlers per promotion would have the honor of representing their federation. Certain champions were guaranteed a spot on the show while the handful of remaining spots had to be earned in a series of tournaments and battle royals. It lead to a few surprise participants which I will cover later.
WWF vs. WCW: Supercard of the Century- July 14, 1996- Baltimore, MD
*:@ A few of the pics aren't showing up for some reason. Oh well. I've been at this all morning. I'm not going through another long image search now.
1. New Rockers vs. Faces of Fear
vs.
The New Rockers of Marty Jannetty & Leif Cassidy earned their spot on the Supercard of the Century by upsetting former WWF Tag Team Champions The Bodydonnas, while Meng & The Barbarian earned their spot by being surprise winners of a Battle Royal when they outlasted such stellar teams as the Steiner Brothers, Nasty Boys & Public Enemy.
These two teams couldn't be more different. WWF's New Rockers are fun-loving, goofy dorks with an innovative high flying style, while WCW's Faces of Fear are surly, no nonsense ass kickers who prefer a brawling, no-frills fighting style. It's true that neither team has the most stellar win/loss record but a victory here with promotional bragging rights on the line would exponentially raise the stock of either team.
2. Justin "Hawk" Bradshaw vs. Scott Norton
vs.
Here we have two more surprise participants. Bradshaw was one of the last two men remaining in WWF's qualifying Battle Royal which I'll cover more in the next entry, while Norton also qualified by winning a Battle Royal, last eliminating "Lord of the Ring" DDP in what has to be considered a major upset.
HOSS FIGHT~! These are two of the biggest men, and hardest hitters in their respective promotions. While neither man has a stunning win/loss record, most insiders agree that both competitors have the potential to be huge future superstars, with the general consensus being that one breakout match is all it would take to rocket either hoss to super stardom. Might this match be the launching point for a future main event superstar? We think so.
3. Henry O. Godwinn vs. Lord Steven Regal- Hog Pen Match
vs.
This was an interactive match with fans being allowed to vote on the stipulation, with the options being HOG's specialty, The Hog Pen Match, or Regal's specialty, The Marquis of Queensbury Rules Match. Hog Pen Match won a 58%-42% vote. Here's how the voting broke down....
WWF Fans: 90% Hog Pen/10% Marquis of Queensbury- WWF fans were solidly behind their man.
WCW Fans: 45% Hog Pen/55% Marquis of Queenbsury- A surprising amount of WCW fans seemed willing to take the loss here just to see the hated aristocrat, Regal, potentially being forced to wallow around in the filthy hog pen.
Neutral Fans: 40% Hog Pen/60% Marquis of Queensbury- General consensus among fans with no strong promotional ties is the Marquis of Queensbury stipulation would "lead to a better match."
HOG got here by being one of the final two survivors in a Battle Royal along with Bradshaw. The match was Austin & Goldust's to lose. And they did! By eliminating each other rather than taking out the "easier" competition. But don't sell the Arkansas hog farmer short! He's a double tough hombre from the working class who would like nothing more than to humiliate the pompous British blue blood.
Regal earned his spot by winning a 'workrate' tournament over Benoit, Malenko, Eddie, Rey, Konnan, Mr. JL & Brad Armstrong. His Lordship is not at all thrilled about having to compete in a Hog Pen Match against a "filthy peasant" like Henry O. Godwinn, but he will do whatever it takes to ensure a WCW victory. Noblesse Oblige, and all that....
4. WWF Tag Team Champions The Smoking Gunns vs. WCW Tag Team Champions Harlem Heat
vs.
This match will finally answer the pressing question of "who is the best tag team in the world?" There are no other options. Both teams have dominated their respective tag divisions for the past 18 months. Each duo has multiple tag title reigns and both teams recently won the top tag title in their promotion yet again. At this point, both teams are in the conversation for being the best tag unit in the history of their promotions.
These teams have far more similarities than differences. Both broke into the Big Two around the same time. Both experienced some early setbacks before achieving super stardom. Both units consist of brothers. Each has a power man and an athletic guy who is much bigger than the average 'athletic guy.' Something has to give when the top two tag teams in the business collide for the very first time with promotional bragging rights on the line.
5. Davey Boy Smith vs. Arn Anderson
vs.
Bulldog earned his spot by scoring the pin in a tag match pitting Camp Cornette against the fan favorite faction of Marc Mero, Savio Vega, and Jake the Snake.
Arn earned his spot by defeating Dungeon of Doom leader Kevin Sullivan.
Here we have another match where the competitors have far more similarities than differences. Each debuted for their respective promotion over a decade ago. Both men made their initial impact as tag team specialists before going on to achieve singles success which culminated in championship gold. Both men are also lynch pins of their respective factions- Camp Cornette for Bulldog and the Four Horsemen for Arn. Both are well-respected midcard workhorses despite their bad guy status. Yet only one of these respected veterans will walk out with his hand raised in yet another first time interpromotional dream encounter.
6. WWF Intercontinental Champion Ahmed Johnson vs. WCW TV Champion Lex Luger
vs.
Ahmed received an automatic spot on the card due to his recent IC Title win over Goldust, while Luger defeated newly christened US Champion Ric Flair to earn his spot on the Supercard of the Century.
Here we have another match with similar opponents. Both are title-holding powerhouses on a hot streak. But the similarities go even deeper. Ahmed is the current Next Big Thing just as Luger was once the Next Big Thing when he burst upon the scene a decade ago. Some say Luger hasn't lived up to his potential. I strongly disagree. He's been a perennial Top 10 wrestler for an entire decade now. He's held more titles than just about anybody over that stretch, including a World Title run, and has main evented multiple major pay per views. Ahmed Johnson is on track to have a similar career and a win over the Ahmed of 10 years ago on what promises to be the most viewed pay per view in wrestling history will only boost his profile.
7. Undertaker vs. Sting- The Phenom vs. The Franchise
vs.
Undertaker earned his spot by defeating his deranged rival Mankind by disqualification.
Meanwhile, Sting made it to the Supercard of the Century by defeating Randy Savage in a controversial match when the New World Order interfered. It should go without saying that the NWO will not be on this card. How could they be?!? Because whose side are they on?
This is perhaps the most highly anticipated match on a card filled with highly anticipated matches. Both long-tenured grapplers have become the faces of their respective promotions with or without championship gold. Both are huge fan favorites despite very different outlooks and appearances. Undertaker is dark and brooding with a methodical wrestling style. Sting is bright and energetic with a wrestling style to match. Yet each man is beloved by practically all wrestling fans. This match would main event pretty much any other card ever. But here on the Supercard of the Century it must settle for merely being the penultimate match.
8. WWF Champion Shawn Michaels vs. WCW Champion The Giant- Match of the Millennium
vs.
Both men earned their spot on the card by being the World Champion of their respective promotions.
And so it has come to this. This is without a doubt the most highly anticipated match of theyear decade century MILLENNIUM. WWF Champion vs. WCW Champion with everything at stake. It just doesn't get any bigger than this. Even Hogan/Andre and Hogan/Warrior must now take a backseat.
Shawn Michaels has not lost a match by pinfall or submission in over 15 months. He achieved his boyhood dream by defeating Bret Hart to win his first WWF Championship in an Ironman Match at Wrestlemania that will be talked about for as long as people talk about professional wrestling. He is also a back to back Royal Rumble winner and WWF Triple Crown Champion who has defeated big men and little men, good guys and bad guys. He is not just considered the greatest wrestler in the world today, but already in the conversation for the greatest wrestler of all time.
Meanwhile, The Giant has been running roughshod over in the Magical Land of WCW. Never before in wrestling history has a rookie burst onto the scene the way The Giant has. He won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in his very first match over Hulk f'n Hogan!!!! Since then he has continued to dominate with a body count that includes first ballot Hall of Famers like Ric Flair, Sting & Lex Luger. Shawn Michaels hasn't been pinned or submitted in 15 months, huh? Big deal, says The Giant. Because he has NEVER been pinned or submitted despite going against a who's who of wrestling over the past decade.
I have run out of superlatives. The time for talk is over. Just get to Baltimore or call your local pay per view provider immediately. Because you do not want to miss this one. WWF vs. WCW. Supercard of the Century. Wrestling has never been bigger than this. Nor will it ever be in the future.
