The Background
When President Trump fell out with long time friend and business partner, Vince McMahon, Trump responded by outlawing professional wrestling. With the collapse of the WWE, ROH, Impact Wrestling and all other major American promotions, grappling fans had to go underground. Soon word spread of an unlikely venue for fans of the squared circle - Steve Austin's Broken Skull Ranch. The Texas Rattlesnake spread word that he was prepared to defy the wrestling ban and run underground shows on his ranch in Texas. Legends of the sport, past and present gathered and a new phase of professional wrestling was born. Austin tested the waters by having a 30-man Royal Rumble style event to crown the first ever BSR Champion. Tickets disappeared rapidly on the black market and the stage was set. Austin entered the Rumble himself and won the Championship by eliminating Chris Benoit. Dave Meltzer called it 'the craziest, most unexpectedly fun night I've had at a wrestling event in years.
The Event
Following the success of his first event, Austin hired handed control of the shows over to a team of mystery bookers, rumoured to include Dutch Mantell, Gary Hart and perhaps even Paul Heyman. Soon tickets began to appear on the black market for "Steve Austin's Broken Skull Ranch presents: Defiance".
BSR Championship
Steve Austin vs. Chris Benoit
Following Benoit's shocking return to wrestling (well that's an understatement) in the BSR Royal Rumble it looked like he was on course to go right back to the top of the mountain by becoming the first ever BSR Champion. When the clock counted down and Stone Cold himself marched to the ring, however, the script was set to flip. A storied rivalry was reborn when Austin ruined Benoit's fairytale (eww) return, won the match, claimed the gold and flipped the bird. The Booking Committee (t-shirts available on prowrestlingtees.com) decided that Benoit deserved a shot at the championship and made him the first challenger to the rattlesnake.
Exhibition Match
Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi
BSR is all about creating events that cannot be missed. In order to insure that this event was worth breaking the law for, the Booking Committee booked two of the sports greatest ever to dance in the squared circle one last time.
The Broken Skull Challenge
The winner of the Broken Skull Challenge will earn a championship opportunity at the next big event. (If there is one and Trump doesn't shut us down). The Broken Skull Challenge takes 12 elite competitors and whittles them down to one victor, through a series of brutal matches. At Defiance (Night One) there will be six singles matches with no disqualification, no countout and falls counting anywhere on the ranch (it is an underground wrestling show in Texas after all). The six men who survive these matches will face off in two triple threat matches at the next big event (again, if we get that far) under the same rules. The two men who win the triple threats (are you still with us) face off inside a steel cage and the winner can face the champion. The opening round matches are:
Terry Funk vs. Luke Harper
Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn
Rick Rude vs. Killian Dain
Bobby Roode vs. James Storm
Bray Wyatt vs. Wade Barrett
Finlay vs. Jack Swagger
Tag Team Match
Jeff Jarrett & The Roadie vs. Elias & The Honky-Tonk Man
To be honest, this match makes us feel like Jerry Lawler or Jerry Jarrett must be on The Booking Committee (patent pending) but that's no bad thing. What would pro wrestling be without some good hearted nonsense. This match will be fought in two stages. First a live concert and then a tag team match. Will the experience that Jarrett and The Roadie have together be enough to defeat the strength and superior musicality of Elias and the Honky-Tonk Man? There's only one way to find out.
