This thread will probably interest nobody... But I find it interesting people's capacity to believe and what it is based on.
Whether you believe smoking gives you cancer is likely influenced by whether you smoke. Your position on Pot legalization on your personal proclivities.
It's really strange how people employ a different criteria on what it takes to be convinced depending on how vested their interests are. Global warming is the classic for me, I encounter so many people who don't believe in it, but as I tell them they don't understand their position, because nobody outside of a few highly educated people are qualified to make judgments on the raw data. All we do is take their viewpoint and see if their logic is rigorous. How can we know if Climate change is real? We can't and therefore we have to TRUST people who are more specialised in their knowledge than ourselves.
We digest the opinions of experts almost without question hundreds of times a day and when it sticks in our throat, it is nearly 100% because we have interests vested on the other side.
So how trusting are you when it comes to Experts? How trusting are you of Doctors? How trusting are you of people generally?
For me I apply a bit of game theory, what does someone have to gain from their answer, if the answer is little and there is some consensus I will often accept unless I have evidence to the contrary. What about you?
I piss off a lot of people in conversation when I am told by people that they have a right to an opinion, because I disagree, we are entitled to opinions not facts. Do you enjoy a robust discussion or are you happy to let people hold their opinions? I think these questions are very interesting in the current political climate.

It's simple. You have an opinion or belief, you go online, and there's enough information, 'evidence' or 'science' or whatever to validate it.
It's why it's so difficult to have a conversation about sustainability or alternative energies or technology that may make our homes, cars, work places more energy efficient - when half the audience believes whole-heatedly we don't need to, as they've seen enough evidence on you-tube to prove climate change is a myth.
