www.theverge.com/tldr/2018/7/11/17559332/phone-photography-addiction-wireless-festivalAre you this guy? Are you the person watching the whole concert through your camera? Did you film your entire 4th firework experience? Do you capture all of your kid's moments to be shared on social media? I know most will likely deny it. I will admit I consciously dedicate only a few minutes at the beginning of a concert or event to take a couple pics and then put my phone down. I do own an HTC Re which makes it incredibly easier to take pics and film things without giving much commitment to taking the pic. And it is a really wide angle lens, so, you just capture the gist and edit it later. But who will admit to being a bit of a phone camera addict? I have been hoping to get a fight on footage ever since my friend took pics of one on a flip phone in vegas like 15 years ago. Still hasn't happened for me. Now I feel it is overdone.

My wife takes an ungodly amount of photos of our boys. She snaps me photos all day. I love it. For her it really is about the memories, but it doesn't come at the expense of actually being "in the moment" with them. It's a delicate balance, though. She gets mad I don't take the same candid photos, but it's not my style.

I’ve gotten way better about it because I have slowly learned that I never care about most pictures ten minutes after I take them. I take plenty with the kiddo, but I don’t stress over the perfect picture so some events (say a birthday party) will end with me having four pictures and none are good. Concerts I won’t take a picture unless I’m close enough to matter, and really won’t take more than one or two anywhere and I gave up on fireworks years ago.
My phone is still probably a problem for me, but the camera isn’t a big part of it.

I deny it and for good reason. I don't do it. Don't get me wrong. The temptation is there. If I go to a music show and they have a great stage or I get a close shot of one of the members, I think about snapping a picture. But I don't. The experience is mine and mine alone. I have no obligation to share it with anybody else. Plus, what are other people going to get out of my low quality gig pictures/videos? It's nothing like being there in person, just a cheap imitation, so it's just attention seeking/showing off. Plus very few people care about the kind of bands I go to see anyway.
Perhaps you could extend that reasoning to any common setting where pictures are taken. But it's different for something like a tourist attraction. Then I will get a picture of myself standing next to/in view of the attraction. Even if it's a craapy selfie, it's a unique picture. There won't be any other pictures on the internet of me in the same picture as that attraction. That said, when I travel I do take a lot of pictures of the scenery and interesting buildings. Over half of them will get deleted, but that's not important. Also for tourist pictures I use my digital camera, not my phone

Pretty much this. It doesn't need to be studio photography perfect, just a quick "we were here" type photo. Something where when my friends and I are in our 70s we can take a look at and jog what's left of our memories, and start telling rambling old man stories about that time we ran around Istanbul looking for a pregnancy test.

My wifes phone is full of pictures of the kids, she spends all day with the kids then all night looking at the photos, it's sweet... Weird... But sweet. My phone is FULL of work photos, I do a lot of reports and this is the way I document how stupid people are for my reports.

I’ve been guilty of this to an extent at concerts, then I saw Tool live and they have an ultra strict no photo/video policy. Felt unusual at first, but greatly appreciated it and have mostly done so for concerts afterwards. Seen Puscifer twice also, it was the same.

I take many photos of my kids. Why wouldn't you? They won't be kids forever.

When you're at home, especially when you have kids. Man go crazy. That's the kind of stuff you should be capturing for yourself especially since they grow so damn fast (pets too). Out in public and/or at show, I don't mind it a little but its a big reason why I don't do general admission or floor seating anymore. I paid money to watch this fucking show, not watch you film it. The last show I went to I took two videos. In total I got 56 seconds of video between the two. That for me to look back on. The other 3 hours I wanted to be engaged in the show.

I'm proud to say that I have NEVER taken a single selfie in my life. And I don't plan on ever starting.
As for people capturing full concerts and such, they probably do that not just to share with friends, but to share with those who can't go to a concert, or even see them on TV/DVD.

I just don't feel the need of littering my devices with selfies. I'll only take pictures when they call for it.

I went to see Iron Maiden last night. Best show ever. One of the great things about it was the crowd etiquette. They had a very elaborate set which changed with every song. You'd expect there to be a flood of phones snapping and recording almost all the time because there was so much to take in. Nope. At the start of every song, phones would go up, but by the time the song kicked in they were all back in pockets. A couple of the set pieces were so amazing that I couldn't resist the temptation to take a few pictures. First time I've done so at a gig. I only took pictures of three of the sets, but one of them turned out awful. Shared them below for the interested.

That looks awesome! All the bands I’ve seen so far in Australia, have had very minimal sets. I’m guessing because of transport costs. I took this photo less than 300m from my house and you can’t see it at all. This was at 8pm!

That's because most bands don't have elaborate stage sets. Certainly not metal bands. Metallica and Maiden are the only metal bands that do it, because they can afford it and play big enough venues to justify it. But even this set was leagues ahead of anything I've seen before, even for Maiden themselves. They've raised the bar several times over.

Concerts sure changed since I went. Used to be bare minimum cash and ID in your boot, something to use as a face mask and depending on the venue a wearable weapon (heavy belts or chokers were common) because the odds of you leaving with a wallet and working phone or anything not on your body were slim to none. Everything else was stashed in the car or in some places left at home. Not sure how many broken phones I seen at shows or people who lost wallets. Many shows did not even make it out with the pack of cigarettes we brought in as they became floor food.
I do not use my phone or anything but a phone. I still use a digicam to get pictures I want, but I rarely take pictures anymore as it is. Not sure why people go through all the effort to take pictures of shows, as usually the live shows are on youtube within a few weeks. Hell I found shows I attended 20 years ago on youtube recently.

Emperor,Holy fuck, as both a Maiden Fan and a lighting designer that stained glass set is just the best. They're a bucket list show for me, I've managed to get a majority of them done (Priest is happening next month!) but Maiden continues to elude me. I don't think I've ever been to a show with such elaborate sets like like. By the time I saw rush they mostly stopped their stage shenanigans. Kendrick Lamar had a really cool stage but it wasn't a traditional intricate set. More screens than anything.

It depends.
Not my phone, but I used to take so many pictures at WWE events. Entrances, during the match, after the match. As I got older, I stopped caring about having so many photos from those events and just took a few for entrances really. I didn't take any when RAW was taped here in 2016 for the first time other than of the tron. I guess having photos of WWE events meant less to be after going to a lot of them.
As for concerts, that is a finer balance. I want to record the songs I really like so I do, do that but I've found myself looking through my phone rather than those on stage. I've got better at that too.

I took an old school camera to a WWE event, not knowing how many pictures I could take.
I used them all up in the first match, which was Kane VS Christian 😂.
