I put up both for a few different reasons , firstly they are both going to be talked about anyways. Secondly I have a bachelor party tomorrow , hangover Sunday and anniversary Monday so I wouldn't probably be able to finish the list as quickly as I'd like.
And the result ended up irritating me so much , like Truman Show ended up winning by a single point and I almost threw up in my mouth a bit. I hate The fucking Truman Show - I watched it in preparation for this list and ugh.
Eternal Sunshine on the other hand I watched for the first time like six months ago and instantly fell in love with it , so much so that I had to watch it again within the first week and it only got better. It's not only Carrey's greatest movie by a wide mile it's probably one of my favorite movies I've seen in a long time - just a remarkable story with superb acting , cool ideas and great payoffs. Carrey is good obviously but the true gem of this movie is Winslett who is so god damn charming and magnetic - it's one of my favorite female performances I can remember seeing. She deserved the Oscar hands down.
Also I wanted to punch Elijah Wood so god damn hard. What a piece of shit.
Those are the movies though , I hope there is some debate because this is the first time in top ten I think PW truly got it wrong. The Truman Show is shit , Eternal Sunshine is a revelation of a movie.

I’m... at peace with The Truman Show. I didn’t like it at all the first time I rewatched it but I’ve grown to a place where I had it at number five on my list because it’s trying something and does okay at times.
But I think Eternal Sunshine is the best movie Carrey’s been in by a country mile. Best writing, most creative direction, most talented costar, and a perfectly managed work by him which does let him do some of his goofy stuff when he needs to. I don’t think he’s great in it, but I think it’s great.

Truman Show is excellent, but not close to Man on the Moon or Eternal Sunshine. My final list was: 1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2. Man on the Moon 3. The Truman Show 4. Dumb and Dumber 5. Liar Liar 6. The Cable Guy 7. The Mask 8. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective 9. Yes Man 10. The Majestic

I watched Eternal Sunshine (for the second time) just before submitting my list in an attempt to understand the hyperbolic statements I am reading. I still don't understand them. Is it a good film? Sure. Is it great? Eh. Borderline. (500) Days of Summer is a fairly routine romcom storyline told with a non-linear narrative. I love that film, and I love the concept. I love that that's all it was, it did it well, and it didn't try to be anything more. Eternal Sunshine is essentially that, but with a few added subplots. It was more ambitious. It's ambition was partially successful. Elijah Wood stealing the girl is a compelling cunt move, but at the time it's introduced I was still trying to work out the actual timeline of events so it didn't have such a great impact on me for most of the film (although the payoff was great). The stuff with Mark Ruffallo and Kirsten Dunst and the old guy felt tacked on. I mean, it was a decent way to keep the main plot moving and give some comic relief, but the sudden reveal that Dunst had her mind wiped in the past just came out of nowhere and stole some of the serious dramatic content away from the main romantic storyline. It wasn't necessary. It placed #5 on my list and I don't think it's an unrivalled masterpiece like other people are claiming. I do agree that it's Carrey's best performance. Reminds me of Nicholson in About Schmidt where he plays a person that's the complete opposite of his typical character and real life personality, and knocks it out of the park. Looks like the silent majority put Truman Show on the top spot. Let me be their voice. The Truman Show is a masterpiece. It's a fantastic concept executed to near perfection. It's the Jim Carrey show, but he's up to the task. The default Truman is a standard goofy Carrey character, but the way his character changes when he starts to find out that something is going on is masterful. His descent into near-madness, then his sudden return to normality to camouflage a clever escape plan. Ed Harris is fantastic as the villain. The scene where he goes live on TV and answers caller questions is one of the best in he movie. The whole world is great, and I love how they slowly introduce the ways that they manipulate the world to keep Truman under control, at a similar rate to when Truman is reaching towards similar conclusions. In essence it's about a man trying to find his long-lost love, in a universe that raises a lot of complex moral questions. The conclusion was missing the scene where Truman and Lauren and reunite, but I'm happy enough to have that implied. Let's have it UT - why do you hate The Truman Show? 1. The Truman Show 2. Dumb And Dumber 3. Man On The Moon 4. Liar Liar 5. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 6. Yes Man 7. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective 8. Batman Forever 9. The Cable Guy 10. The Majestic I'm surprised Batman Forever didn't make the list. It's a Batman film. I figured it would make the Top 10 for sure.

I can't believe you'd even put THE WORST #1 MOVIE in top ten history 500 Days of Summer in the same sentence as Eternal Sunshine. One movie is a steaming pile of pretentious shit and the other is a greatest movies made in the 2000's. Reopening old wounds with my hate for 500 Days.
As for my hate for The Truman Show , I can't even expand on it that much because I was zoned in and out so much , even fell asleep a few times on a day where I had no reason to fall asleep. I didn't buy any of it , it was ambitious but it failed to hook me at all. I didn't buy into the story , I didn't care about the characters and I remember just wanting it to be over so I could find a different movie to watch. I want to say I would give it another shot like MikeC and at least see what a lot of others do - but I don't know that I'll ever have that motivation.

I'm glad you ended up being the Voice for the Voiceless for Truman (and kinda against Eternal Sunshine) because I couldn't have done as good a job nearly as eloquently. I can't believe you'd even put THE WORST #1 MOVIE in top ten history 500 Days of Summer in the same sentence as Eternal Sunshine. I feel like you could switch movie titles in that first paragraph and still have a pretty accurate statement. As to the second paragraph and your Truman hate, methinks it's just a matter of UT preferring EdTV over Truman (a la preferring Deep Impact or Volcano over Armageddon or Dante's Peak).

You're dead to me. Jim Carrey is far better and the character is far more likable than that whiny bitch JGL was trying to play. And even though Deshanel is the only redeeming quality about 500 , Winslett still blows her out of the water.
And I've never seen EDTV , and Armageddon is a master piece. So no... Truman just sucked.

Eternal Sunshine is cinematic poetry. I’m not going to debate such a raw emotional reaction to a film because I simply can’t put into words how much it hit me.

I've never seen the Truman Show and I really should because I absolutely LOVE the premise. It's something that could have been written by Phillip K Dick or Ray Bradbury. It's unusual to see social science fiction on film and Truman Show is one of those rare examples.
As for Eternal Sunshine, this pretty much sums up my opinion of it.
Hence why I only rate it #7. Is it good? Sure. Is it massively overrated?? Absolutely.

I rewatched 500 Days of Summer a month or so ago as well. I was still mostly bored by it but I didn’t leave angry so that’s good. I just never feel like the tone balances out to anything realistic. Which is one thing if you’re making a movie about people that can erase other people from their memory and a different if you’re just making a movie about a guy getting, breaking up with, and getting over a girlfriend.
I’d have to really think about Carrey’s best performances after Man on the Moon. I think his Joel in Eternal Sunshine is fine, but also not that hard, but as I’m thinking about it I’m remembering scenes that were a little more challenging like them erasing the memories of the first meeting or him trying to rationalize the tapes and go for it despite it all. Eternal Sunshine might be his second best performance by happenstance, but I think he’s pretty good in Truman Show and though it didn’t make the list I like him in The Majestic too.

Surprising #1, I rewatched it for the first time since it came out a few months ago and thought it was weird and not entertaining in any way, I was sick with the flu so that may have been why I had such a negative experience.

I don't think I could ever go back and watch (500) Days of Summer. It was the perfect movie to watch as a 19-year-old and I still enjoy the OST to this day, but I'm not sure if I could relate to JGL's character as much. I will say that I thought the 'unrealistic' nature of the film was intentional. JGL's character was overly-sentimental and romantacised his relationship to the point he became delusional. What he thought were romantic moments, weren't so for Summer (Zooey) and we don't get those glimpses until later on.
In a lot of ways, I find JGL's other movie Don Jon is a spiritual successor, except this time it's the ScarJo who is obsessed with romantic comedies to the point of delusion.

Truman Show was my highest rated Carrey drama, no real problem with the outcome.
1. Liar Liar 2. Me, Myself, and Irene 3. Dumb and Dumber 4. The Truman Show 5. The Mask 6. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective 7. Man on the Moon 8. How the Grinch Stole Christmas 9. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 10. Cable Guy
Might catch some shit for having Grinch over Sunshine and Cable Guy, but I really enjoyed it, and my nieces and nephews really had me grow an appreciation for it.
I never have seen the Majestic, just one I've never gotten around to.

I already loved The Truman Show, and had to study it in high school which didn’t kill it for me. I know a lot of people hate Blade Runner because they had to watch it 100 times in high school.

Eternal Sunshine is a true love story , with a realistic take on so many relationships and breakups. 500 Days of Summer is a juvenile way to look at infatuation and the bitchiness of an immature manchild after the girls doesn't reciprocate the same feelings.
The two aren't even comparable.

It’s not easy to be traumatized and stoic, despite what people may think. Watching him bounce between all stages of love and grief was exceptional range, even more so than what was shown in Man on the Moon.

Well for one Star Trek doesn't blatantly insult your intelligence.
Seriously the premise for Armageddon is one of, if not THE dumbest thing I've ever seen on film. I couldn't take the movie seriously after that. Deep Impact covers the same subject and actually does it in a plausible way.
Ben Affleck even tried to tell Michael Bay how stupid the premise of the film was, but of course was ignored.

Fuckin pissed Batman Forever wasn’t in the top ten.

I blame Wife for voting Bruce so high that it ended up on the overall Top Ten. Carrey's Riddler or maybe even his Grinch were iconic enough as characters that they warranted a spot. Granted, I would've given that spot to the Majestic, lol.
