So I've been gaming for 22 years and in that time, I've built up a decent collection of games. Usually the only games that leave my collection are those I 'lend' out, the rest I hold onto although in all likelihood I may never revisit those games again. I'm just wondering if there's more people like me who likes to hold onto their collection and keep the clutter? Or once you're done with a console, you get rid of it and put the money towards a new interest?
For what it's worth my current collection of consoles include:
NES SNES N64 Wii Wii U Switch Game Boy Colour
Game Boy Advance (x3) Nintendo DS (used to be x4)
Nintendo 3DS (x2)
Saturn
PS1 PS2 (x2)
PS3 (x2) PS4 X Box 360
My most valuable game would be Skies of Arcadia for the GameCube which sells for $200+ in Australia. I'd say the console I've collected the most for is PS2 which stands at 50+ games. Every now and then I like to buy retro games, but if the game is significantly cheaper on digital platforms I'll go with that. On that topic, I prefer the flexibility of buying games physically. Digital has it's advantages, but I try to avoid buying too many games since more often than not I'll ignore them.

My current collection of consoles include: Playstation 2 (x1) Nintendo 3DS (x1)
And I'm thinking of getting rid of my 3DS because I never play it. The only 3DS game I would want to play again is A Link Between Worlds, and there are no other games out there that interest me. Maybe Yo-Kai Watch, but I'm not convinced by it to fork out money.
I've never been one to collect things for the sake of it, but I do have a Playstation collection. Not collecting for the sake of collecting, though. I just wanted to have physical copies of all the PS1 and PS2 games that I would want to play or replay in the future. That collection currently stands at 30-40 PS2 games and 13 PS1 games. There's not many more that I want. About 15 or so more games between the PS1 and PS2 but that includes some super rare games like Legend of Dragoon and Symphony of the Night.
The only other console I would want to get in the future is a SNES, because that has a big library containing a lot of amazing games. I'd be content with a Playstation collection and a SNES collection. Anything else would just be gathering dust.

Am I wrong in thinking the 3DS was quietly discontinued after the Switch came out? Other than the Moon and Sun Ultra versions I don't think I've heard a single thing about it.

Outside of the Luigi Mansion remake, I can't think of anything set to be released.
It had a solid year after the Switch launch. Granted it was mostly ports, remakes and obscure RPGs but it wasn't like the Wii U which really dropped off once Breath of the Wild came out.

I've been collecting games since 2003. Sometime in 2002 in Houston one of my band mates had a NES hooked up with Contra going and it was like holy shit I need more of this in my life. Never really knew where to find any old systems though until I found a shop called Game Xchange, where I picked up a Sega Genesis for $20 and a few games. I just kept buying more and more games and eventually started getting into all the other systems. After the great purge of 2011 when I sold off a chunk of my collection I've slowly been rebuilding, it's nowhere near what I had as far as the games but for systems I got:
JVC X'Eye(high end Genesis with Sega CD built in) Top loader NES SNES N64 Game Cube Model 1 Sega Genesis with Power Base Converter to play Master System games Dreamcast Saturn PS2 slim original XBOX soft modded, crashed on me but I'm determined to somehow fix it PS3 Gameboy Color Game Gear

I have been wanting a 3DS just for the 3D remakes of the old school Sega arcade games and 3D Shinobi III, can you still buy those on their e-shop or is that all discontinued?

A couple of years ago, I binged watched every episode of the Game Chasers. They're a couple of Texans who hit all the markets, pawn shops, garage sales etc. looking for deals. The series first started in 2011 and it was amazing to see how cheap everything was over there. All the retro stuff was mostly $10 a pop, if not cheaper when bought in bulk and the selection was crazy. Have you ever seen the show, Shin? Was always curious if you'd ever been to any of those stores, albeit I think they're Dallas-based.
Our scene is nothing like that. Even when the Australian dollar was strong, if you wanted to buy old Nintendo or SEGA games, you were always looking atleast $20-30 a pop. Maybe you'd get lucky and stumble on a garage sale or know somebody looking to offload their old system, but for the most part the idea of owning a massive library was too expensive.
The 3DS E-Shop is still up and running with all the 3D SEGA games available. They also released a brand new Shinobi game on the system which is usually dirt cheap and supposedly it's pretty decent.

Nomad Gamegear Saturn Dreamcast N64 PSXPSOne PS2PSTwo PS3Xbox (Modded) Xbox 360 PS4
I would say Sony stuff isn't built well but I do play a lot of stuff so most of them make sense. Had one repair on PS3 but still went out a little bit later. 360 was repaired 3-4 times but still works. Wish I got another PS3 while they were still making them.

Currently: PS2 PS3 PS4 XBox 360 SNES Wii
I plan on getting a Switch ASAP (currently saving for a vehichle), then a XBoneX, and eventually a NES, N64, and Gamecube (with a GBA adapter). That'll pretty much cover all the systems I really care about, since Dreamcast just doesn't hold enough for me to care about (even less now that Shenmue 1 and 2 are on PS4). I might get a 3DSXL, I'm not the biggest on handhelds (hence, the GBA adapter for Gamecube), so I'm not really entirely sure if I get that or other handhelds.
My most valuable game is probably just Symphony of the Night on PS1, which is up to about $50-$60. I currently own the most on PS3, but as I've only recently started rebuilding my collection of things I got rid of when I was younger, I think ultimately PS2 will win out.
More of a physical guy, I even buy old games I can easily get on emulator, I just prefer the real copies. Well...realish. I did buy a reproduction of the Ninja Gaiden trilogy, as much as I love games, I can't justify $200 for a single cartridge, maybe if I ever get rich.

It's a tough console to collect for nowadays. Classics like Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, Mega Man X etc. go for 60 quid and that's just for the cart. I'm curious to know whether or not you'd simply go PAL or whether you'd go with a Super Famicom or a US Super Nintendo?
You weren't joking about Symphony of the Night. The cheapest listed price is $250 AUD, it usually goes for $400. That's a good holy grail item and the PAL cover looks amazing. Have you ever considered going for a PSP collection? There's a sweet Castlevania compilaton pack that includes both Symphony of the Night & Rondo of Blood among others. A lot of games that didn't receive PAL releases like Tales of Eternia, Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkyrie Profile all received PSP ports and are a fraction of the price of their PS1 counterparts. The same can be said of the GBA and it's Super Nintendo ports.

The games I want most are LTTP, Illusion of Gaia/Soul Blazer/Terranigma, Donkey Kong Country, Earthbound, Super Mario World. There's a bunch of others, a fair few obscure titles. I haven't put much thought into the region. Does it make a difference? Never considered a PSP collection, but now that you mention it, it sounds like a pretty decent idea. Would definitely have more lasting value than my 3DS.

Would definitely have more lasting value than my 3DS. The Japanese Super Famicon isn't as expensive and offers a far better selection of games. The only downside is the language barrier, power differences and the anxiety of importing. The USA is a similar deal, except it isn't as cheap, especially for complete in box copies. That's a good selection of games, but be warned that Earthbound never came out in PAL territories and Soul Blazer is incredibly rare. It didn't receive a UK or Australian release, it only came out in select parts of Europe so it fetches a high price.
At this stage, I'd almost recommend just buying a SNES mini. 21 of the SNES best, including games that never came out in PAL regions.

No unfortunately. You can mod the console and do whatever you want with it. However, if you go down that path, the only advantage the SNES Classic has over the Raspberry Pi is the authentic controllers and menu.

I used to sell my older consoles in order to afford new ones back in the day, this pretty much stopped with the Wii as I started having my own income soon after that, so my console collection right is just: Wii Wii U 3DS XL Switch I still have some old gamecube controllers, my copy of Kirby Air Ride for the Gamecube, and a couple of DS games, but mostly it's all new stuff. Am I wrong in thinking the 3DS was quietly discontinued after the Switch came out? Other than the Moon and Sun Ultra versions I don't think I've heard a single thing about it. Games that released in 2017 for the 3DS after the Switch came out include: Fire Emblem Echoes: a remake of one of the old FE games that never came out outside Japan, much better than Awakening and Fates were, imo. Ever Oasis: Imagine if Animal Crossing and Secret of Mana had a baby. Hey! Pikmin: A 2D platformer Pikmin spinoff, just ok. Dragon Quest X Monster Hunter Stories: Monster Hunter, but a bit more Pokemon. Metroid Samus Returns: A remake of Metroid 2, very VERY good. Yo-Kai Watch 2 Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga: the original remade using the Dream Team engine. Etrian Odyssey V Fire Emblem Warriors: Also available for the Switch. Mario Party The Top 100: Literally just a mini game compilation from the whole series' past. Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: the "third versions" of Gen 7, pretty dang good imo, but not too much of a jump if you played the previous ones and are not super into Pokemon. Kirby Battle Royale: basically Kirby's take on Power Stone, even has online lol. Detective Pikachu Sushi Striker: a cool puzzle game that is also available for Switch. Captain Toad: also available for Wii U and Switch lol WarioWare Gold: Possibly the best WarioWare game so far, tbh. For the rest of the year there is the Luigi's Mansion remake as far as "big" releases goes. The system is definitely winding down, for obvious reasons, but it still gets a few games, since the install base is big enough to make it a worthwhile investment, I guess. It still gets mentioned whenever a Nintendo Direct happens, which tends to annoy the hell out of people that seem to think it should have been dropped like a brick as soon as the Switch came out lol.

Nintendo (doesn't work) SNES Nintendo 64 (doesn't work) Wii Nintendo Switch Playstation 3 (it's in our bedroom and used as a Netflix box now) Playstation 4
I used to have an Xbox 360 and a Playstation 2 but I sold them.
I used to have a Game Boy but I lost it years and years ago.
My daughter has a 2DS that she bought with birthday money.
EDIT: Oh yeah I had Sega Genesis too. My uncle gave it to me with all his games when he decided he didn't want to play video games anymore. I gifted it to a friend a few years later when I got a Nintendo 64.

I only have X-Box One, NES Classic and an old Super Nintendo (we're likely selling).
Over the years I've had an NES, Genesis, Sega Game Gear, Nintendo 64, Game-Boy Color and original X-Box, but I've either sold, given away or lost each one. Somehow I've never owned a Playstation, though I already have my eye on the PS5.

The 3DS had an impressive life-span. When it was first released, there were a lot of concerns about it's viability, especially in the growing mobile market and how much it resembled the DS. During it's initial year, the system was in real trouble and wouldn't come good until 2013. Then business exploded and the system produced some of the best games of this generation. A Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem Awakenings, Monster Hunter IV were just some of the highlights and I feel there's a ton of IPs that failed to receive the recognition they deserved.
I bought mine around March of 2013. Initially I had no plans of collecting for the system and specifically remember narrowing my focus to Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing, Pokemon & Tales of the Abyss. One day, I came across Kid Icarus: Uprising on clearance for $15 and instantly wanted to play more games from the system. I ended up buying another 3DS and to date have a library of 25 games. I would have more if my backlog wasn't so big. Currently I still need to play through Pokemon X, Fire Emblem Awakenings, Code Name Steam, Dragon Quest VII, Dragon Quest VIII, Xenoblade Chronicles, Pokemon Sun, Shin Megami Tensei: Apocalypse, Monster Hunter IV etc. that I really ought to get through first. Right now, I could easily list 25 more games I'd like to add to my collection before it's all said and done.

I have the SNES/N64/Wii/Wii U XBOX/XBOX 360 PS1/2/3/4 and had a few handhelds as well as a PC. I have a tonne of games, especially PS3 (I think over 100) but i've switched to digital on PS4 so i don't have many psychical games for it. I've spent over $10,000 at EB Games if that gives you any indication, kind of regret a lot of it to be honest. Just went through a time of stupid spending and haven't played much of my collection.
Howver i'd like to get a NES/Gamecube and Switch so i'd have every Nintendo console. (Forget that VIrtua Boy nonsense though)

It's a shame the rewards program took so long to come in. My family would have spent thousands at EB Games when my brother and I were younger. I've only recently become a Lvl 2 member and I rarely buy anything from the store. If they have a good pre-owned deal, or I'm after a collector's item I'll shop there, otherwise Big W, Target & JB Hi Fi are my first port of call.
Originally I was going to ask members to itemise their collection, but the thought of getting some members to list 100 games sounded unrealistic. I can't imagine owning that many for a console. Did you have a vested interest in each game? Or was it like going to a video shop and throwing games in because they looked interesting and you could get a better deal? I'm not sure what it is about PS3. Despite being out of gaming for the bulk of it's life-span, I've somehow ended up with 25 games for it.

I’d just buy any games available, Zap that used to post here assumed I only owned Super Street Fighter IV for PS3 because that’s all he ever saw me online playing..probably about 10% I’ve played let alone finished. So not wise investments.
br] Hitman/MGS/Dark Souls are the only series I remember finishing.
Let me download Excel and I’ll list all my games 😂
